Well, the only possible reason is that they had realised it was a BAD game and a BAD idea to call it "Sonic 4" so now theyre probally working on a way to make an episode 2 with another engine, art direction, soundtrack, and not to destroy the Canon of the series + make everyone believe that everything went according to the inicial plans

Sonic does the same things to stop Robotnik Eggman. Metal Sonic will be back. I totally see the contradictions with actual, known Sonic the Hedgehog canon. Especially with such a convoluted story.
