Topic: Should Nintendo stop making Wiiware games?

I can't understand the first poster at all.
Virtual Console and WiiWare are completely different services so you can't exactly compare them in such simple childish terms.
Virtual Console allows for older games to be re-released so that people can relive some of the hi-lights of gaming or discover them for the first time. On the other hand WiiWare is a service where independent developers can publish games. I think the WiiWare service and it's similar counterparts on the other platforms (for example Xbox Live Arcade) are crucial to the future of gaming as they are an easy way for smaller companies to enter the industry and flourish. WiiWare is a creative hub for developers and should not be discontinued.

Actually, Sean, it wasn't long into the Wii's life cycle when they started using demo channels that do just that called the "Get Connected" channel. Perhaps it was a North America-only thing. Wikipedia says it started in 2008, but I have no idea if that's the case or if they still install this channel on new Wiis, but I remember people here talking about it, so I know it's not completely fabricated.

The channel does exist, as it was on my Wii when I bought it last year. It just advertised what could be done if you take your Wii online. I think Sean is talking about something much more aggressive than a channel that just sits there, like something that keeps starting up automatically when you turn on the Wii until you actually sit through it or tell it to never start up again. In general, if something starts up automatically, most people will go ahead and watch it unless it's really bad.

@Mickeymac @SuperPeach:

First, the Bit Trip games, especially Runner. There's also Castlevania ReBirth, which is one of my favorite Wii games ever. I poured dozens of hours into ExciteBike: World Rally, and likewise with Water Warfare. There's also Mega Man 9 & 10, and heaven forbid I forget Cave Story.

Recently Jett Rocket and Pearl Harbor Ep 1 came out, but I haven't had a chance to buy points yet for them (however, they're receiving a lot of praise here on NL, from staff and community alike). Those are the best games I've personally played, but for lack of funds that's all I've been able to. There are manymanymany more games on the service that I'd love to play. :3

Ah, I hate anything that loads automatically and always try to exit out of it. I'd have to question just how enthusiastic a customer is, anyway, if he sees these other channels sitting right next to the disc channel and never bothers to click on them once. I mean, it'd be an entirely unnecessary step having to load the menu and click the disc channel if there wasn't something else to do, and there those other options are, staring right at you.

You've basically listed the only good games on the system, with the exception of the two cheap knock-offs you mentioned at the end. Or rather, you listed the only ones I know are good. All I have on Wiiware are Retro sequels to series I've been playing for years, remakes of freeware games, A few games that got demoes way back when Nintendo had them, and some games that I got at launch that simply weren't worth the points.

I can no longer speak for SuperPeach - his reasons for ignoring Wiiware are his own - but personally, I think the biggest problem with Wiiware are the lack of demoes. If I'm stuck with whatever I buy, shouldn't I be inclined to know whether or not it'll be worth the cash? Heck, I only buy PSN or XBLA games after I've played the demo, and in the case of PSN, if it doesn't have a demo, I don't buy it. I don't care what anybody says, to me, you can't determine whether a game is good until you've honestly played it. Even for VC games I can "Try before I buy", even if through means Nintendo never intended. The fact that I'm taking a big risk with every Wiiware purchase annoys me to no end, and usually I just end up saying the hell with it. I'll start caring about Wiiware again when Nintendo brings back demoes, end of story.

For what its worth, my vote is...
Don't get rid of WiiWare, but do release more Virtual Console titles. =]

I got my machine in October 2007, so I wasn't aware they had a "Get Connected" Channel. It definitely seems like a step in the right direction, but as Moco Loco said, I was thinking something more "in your face." I agree for some of us it might be more annoying, but the fact is that modern gaming consoles are a lot more complicated than the old, pop-in-a-cart/disc days and if you aren't aware of those features then you're less likely to bother with them whether there's a channel there or not.

I think Nintendo should make a new 2D Mario platformer or overhead Zelda game for WiiWare to make people sit up and notice the service.

I wouldn't even mind if they were designed from New Super Mario Bros. and Gamecube Zelda Four Swords but with completely new stages and some new play gimmick.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

The OP seems to make a lot of these trollish topics where its more him making a simple statement than a real question he wants answered.

Anyway, the 2 services are completely different and not related except maybe scheduling if a wiiware is part of an old series. Simply putting out old games is easy but negotiations over rights of titles 20 years old isn't. Which is why I'm sure you'd almost always see the same games in retro compilations. Many companies put out most of the titles they could on VC so now we aren't getting very many. People were so mad about nintendo waiting to put out titles like smash bros on VC but its obvious they knew this would happen and wanted to space out their releases. There are still some titles coming but you have to accept that there will not be nearly as many as there used to be.

Stopping wiiware will change nothing about VC and then we'll have even less games to play. Wiiware lets developers make new games and put it out cheaply. Sure, many are shorter than disc releases or even VC but you get them at a pretty good price and get some cool updated retro games and original titles. I really don't understand the wiiware hate. I mean we got a real excitebike sequel with online playh as well as a new 2d castlevania through wiiware. Not to mention original titles like the bit.trip series. There are well over 300 VC games. Is that not enough? Does wiiware magically make your virtual console games less fun? Did wiiware beat up your mom?

I love the Wiiware service. It has a ton of awesome things that are some of my favorite parts of gaming.

Remade/Ported Indie Games- World of Goo, Cave Story, La Mulana, Toribash, Super Meat Boy
Unique Games- Bit.Trip Runner, LostWinds, and Swords & Soldiers
Retro Sequels- Mega Man 9, Mega Man 10, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, ReBirth series

I'd be incredibly sad if Nintendo took the services out. Because that's one of the only lifelines for some of my favorite video game subgenres. D:

Ah, no. It was released on Windows and Wiiware on the same day.

My reason is that wiiware just doesn't interest me at all. Sometimes they come out with with something interesting that I might want to get but I put it off and never feel motivated to get it. Plus getting my wii online is chore so I only bother with it if it's worth it.

Those are far from the only good games on the service. If you want a list of good games, just sort games by ranking on this site and go down the list until Corbie's 7's start.

There's a lot of quality stuff, and unless you've played every WiiWare game, there's no way to say definitively what the only good games are. There's also the Art Style games, Swords and Soldiers, the Lost Winds games, World of Goo, the My Life as King games, The After Years, etc., all of which are said to be great.

Lack of demos is lamentable, and surely this prevents lots of us from realizing the amount of goodness WiiWare has to offer, but that's another issue. Nothing to do with the quality of games not being demoed. I'm sure that all the people like me who downloaded the Pokemon Rumble demo to play it over and over and never bought the full game really helped Nintendo's decision, but oh well. Game's expensive.

No, I don't really care anymore on the recent VC releases. However, I still need to download more old games. I only want Donkey Kong 64 and I'll probably get Ufouria when it will come. Wiiware is my solution. I have more WIiware games on my wishlist than on the VC. But you have to think that it's not Nintendo fault on the lacks of VC games. I asked people how many VC games did you download? If you downloaded more 3rd party games, the 3rd party would bring more games. But you can't blame the 3rd party to not try but when you see on the top 20 like 18 games are from NIntendo. Blame yourself first before blaming Nintendo to cut the VC.

Obviously, they aren't churning out classic after classic on the WiiWare service, but as far as canceling the service goes...that's ridiculous. Sure, there's probably a little too much shovelware, but there's even more of that being released in retail as far as the Wii is concerned.
Some of this generations must creative/unique titles (not just on WiiWare, but also the PSN and XBLA) have been released via a downloadable service. Games like World of Goo, the Bit.trip series, Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid, the Pixel Junk series, Mega Man 9 & 10, Everyday Shooter, Cave Story, Flower, Shadow Complex, etc. would not have been possible if not for these downloadable services. The bigtime publishers aren't going to spend all of the money to put these games into full-retail production. With these downloadable services, they're able to take "risks" on releasing these titles due to the lack of any substantial overhead, since money will only be spent on development and maybe a bit of advertising.
