There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Your thesis seems to be that WiiWare is "hurting" the Virtual Console; therefore Nintendo should stop making WiiWare games, despite the fact that any actual reason to stop making WiiWare would be business-related and not because some people on the internet would like to have more Virtual Console games and don't like WiiWare games. Since Nintendo appears to regard original games for download as important to future business plans, even if they weren't making money on any of them I would expect them to keep supporting WiiWare.

But Oregano, Rondo cost them less to put online and earned them more, if you are correct, so why is Virtual Console the problem in this example...?

If Virtual Console truly does so much better for them, Nintendo should not need to forbid them from making WiiWare to get the picture that they need to support VC more.

i think the Big N should make more wiiware about there characters like Link or Mario ... or maybe like a Super Smash Bros. WiiWare with some WiiWare characters like Commander Video ... i can just imagine a fight between C.V and Mr. Game and Watch

I don't think Nintendo is forbidding them, I think they lack interest because it causes problems for their modern productions and whilst they may make more money off the VC games in the short term it can hurt series potential in the long run. Castlevania is probably one of the best examples of that with modern entries selling a fraction of past ones and often being considered mediocre and Iga's budgets have been dropping lower and lower.

I may be totally wrong but I'm thinking that 3rd parties may be concerned about VC taking away from modern games, even if it's not the same series I know I'd be worried about having to compete with stuff like Ocarina of Time and Super Mario World.

As a non-Wii example many people said jokingly that FFVII on PSN has probably outsold stuff like The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery and whilst that may seem good that it made so much money it is also a major concern because of the fact that their modern games aren't selling.

Why do you think third party interest has diminished?

I know Nintendo isn't forbidding anyone, but that's the topic at hand, as over the top as it is. The thread was suggesting that no new WiiWare games be made so that VC could have the chance to shine.

I don't think interest has diminished much, really. I think those who were interested enjoyed it while it lasted and now either have run out of games to put out (a position even Nintendo is nearly in) or just aren't making money enough on it to justify the effort (I think Hudson said this). And then there are those who were never particularly interested, either because they suspected the games wouldn't sell enough to earn back Nintendo's fees or they see their games making more money as remakes at retail prices (like Square).

I think Nintendo is the one most interested in seeing WiiWare outshine VC, actually. It would make their console look bad if they relied all on old titles while the competition have a steady stream of new downloadable titles and only the occasional oldie.

But I don't know. Hard to really understand anything when Nintendo keeps us in the dark. We have no idea what it costs to put a game on VC (obviously it isn't free or everyone would put their games on VC), how much WiiWare costs, or how Nintendo determines its release schedule.

I generally prefer VC myself, but with few exceptions, it's gotten most of what I want already, and WiiWare has the more promising future. I don't see why they can't both live on side by side though. The topic seems pretty silly to me.

I think VC is pointless. I would never pay money for an old game that I have already on an old system. I just hook the old system up if I really want to play one of those games that badly. Are you going to keep repurchasing these old games with each new system? Nintendo has to love that.

Wiiware offers something new at a great price.

The wii is targeted towards children who usually don't have a NES or N64 in there tv's.

Wiiware offers something new at a great price.

  • Some people don't have those old systems anymore
  • Some people don't want to hook up their old systems just to play a few games that they can get for a system they already have hooked up
  • Some people were born before those old systems came out
  • some people have those old systems, but not those old games
  • Some people get VC so they can play games they never had before
  • Most VC games are cheaper than actual carts
  • Some games are really rare and expensive
  • Sometimes you pay all that money for a cart, and the cart dies, doesn't have a manual, etc.
  • VC is guaranteed to work, and all games come with manuals
  • At least with VC games, its far easier to know what games are good and what games are not

In other words, VC is far from pointless. I can't think of any good points for Wiiware, however. Even if they are new, and they are cheap, most aren't nearly as good as the old.

I don't care about WiiWare at all. All I need is Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade (and maybe PSN soon since I'm planning to buy a PS3). I have bought about 55 Virtual Console and 30 XBLA games but not a single WiiWare title so far. There are just no really tempting games for me on WiiWare.

Virtual Console needs definitely more support by Nintendo and third party nowadays. If that means fewer WiiWare releases in the future I wouldn't miss a thing.

Wiiware offers something new at a great price.

1) Something new is not always something better. Quality is the keyword.

2) Compare the picture quality of games emulated on Virtual Console with playing on the original console. The discrepancy between both pictures signals is huge especially on a modern television.

3) Old videogame cartridges with saving feature use a battery with a limited lifespan. Imagine to loose your savegame playing some epic old school RPG.And there's no real way to change the battery without losing all your saved stats.

4) I will definitely not buy the same games online every console generation. If Nintendo doesn't offer some transfer system with their next console generation Nintendo can go just to hell. I actually despise videogaming piracy. But when Nintendo would choose to punish their loyal and paying Virtual Console customers in such a way I would only see a huge drift to emulators.

@Adam: You are right there about Nintendo keeping us in the dark and probably right about the third party support although Square Enix has shown it's not worried about having numerous versions of something available at the same time with FFII/IV and I think you can get two different versions of FFI and Tactics on the PSP!

..am I the only one who's okay with one VC game every two week? I wouldn't say I'm nostalgic really, there's been improvements in many small areas such as GUIs that make it hard for me to go back to old games. I'd much rather have remakes.
