Topic: Rainbow Islands Towering Adventure (Ending Spoilers)- Disappointed

I downloaded Rainbow Islands Towering Adventure and really enjoyed the new style of play. At first I whizzed through all 7 areas and skipped destroying two bosses in favour of climbing higher to escape them. Naturally when I arrived at the top of area seven instead of fighting Dr.Crescent in his Crescent Robot then Holly (the comet) used the power of all 7 emeralds to destroy him and I got a credits roll to signal the end of the game.

I went back and this time defeated all the 7 area bosses and was able to battle Dr Crescents "Crescent King" Robot. After defeating the robot then I was sure I would get my wish granted by Holly (The comet) but she said that she would "maybe" grant my wish IF I could keep up with her. At this point time I was short on time but I started to follow her further upwards. Holly moves around the screen and starts to shoot bullets, she also has spheres things get circle her and also move around the screen getting in your way. Naturally I ran out of time and she gave me a short speech saying that she didn't really have the power to grant wishes and it was just a story that she told to get people to climb Rainbow Tower and be her friend. Once again I got the credit roll.

I then have spent the last couple of days to keep trying to beat Holly to the top of this area, but always fell short on time (The trick is to start from Area 6 to build up more time on your clock and get a Level 7 Rainbow Jump ready) This evening I finally reached the top-which a healthy 124 seconds left on the clock only to have Holly say the same thing as if you fail to reach the top and get ther credit roll again.

Either I've missed something (like maybe not collecting all 7 jewels in rainbow order on each stage like you used to have to do on the acrade version) OR Taito couldn't be bothed to add an extra ending for people that did complete the insane challange of reaching the top area.

Has anyone else reached the top or collected all 7 Jewels/Gems in order on any of the levels and unlocked a secret door? (like on the acrade version) I

Wow, what dedication! I wasn't impressed and removed the game from my Japanese Wii after playing it a few times myself.

Was that because you expected something along the lines of the arcade version?

The whole countdown clock is new spin on the rainbow Islands formula. Sometimes you have to mix things up a litle to keep them fresh. I did think at times that loosing 30 seconds was a little harsh, but after playing this game a lof if you keep moving and dispatching enemies at high speed it's easy to really get your countdown clock as high as 700 seconds or higher still.

I loved the music (esp the final level) enjoyed the colourful backgrounds as you climbed the tower and if people bothered to read the instruction book it's a tale of "Science VS Magic" on a small scale.

Despite my bitter disappointment at the lack of a "real" ending I'm a glutton for rainbow Islands and will see if collecting all germs in rainbow order does unlock anything extra.

EDIT- Collecting gems/Jewels in Rainbow order doesn't do anything different.

I agree the ending was kind of a bummer but I really admire your skill, it took me around 4 hours of constantly replaying the final level before I finally was able to beat the end boss. Or maybe I just really suck.

Did you have any trouble doing a rainbow jump in the game? It usually took me around 5 tries before I can get the game to recognize my upward motion. I don't think it's a problem with my remote since none of the other games I've played had this much trouble recognizing motions.

Dr Cresents "Crescent King" Robot is easily defeated once you know the pattern. But one thing that did bother me on a few occasions is when you land the final hit then the Robot sometimes still flies up/down the screen of blasts ihis arms off in your direction, Before exploding and the Holly appearing again.

The Rainbow Jump was would have been better mapped to the B button. Flicking the wiimote upwards didn't work well when you have to play with the wiimote in a side way postion.

The main problem for me was the level boss, he kept spamming his homing projectile attack and you can't shoot rainbows fast enough to absorb all of his bullets while still having enough left over to attack him unless you have max rate of fire heading into the battle. The final boss itself wasn't that hard to avoid, but you need to have plenty of time left after beating the level boss in order to defeat it.

Time is def against you for the final battle and race with Holly to the "True top" of area 7. Best advice is to play from area 1 all the way to area 7 and clock up losts of time. Playing like this at one point I had 900 + on the clock. Since the game is fast paced it takes less than 20mins to complete I'd say.

Closer in tone certainly. The bosses weren't terribly interesting and there didn't seem to be much different from one level to the next. I just didn't find it fun to play the same way I did Rainbow Islands -- not breaking up the action by having a level end removed a lot of sense of accomplishment for me. I also liked the fact that Rainbow Islands had, you know, islands in it -- this game didn't really warrant the name, frankly.

That's weird about the ending.

Has anyone tried attacking Holly? I haven't.

Another question: what is the actual height of the tower?

(I didn't even know about the rainbow jump function until I read this thread, and I managed to get to 7665m without it. I imagine the tower is 8000m, so with a level 7 rainbow jump that should about do it.)

Holly doesn't like like people getting to close to her. She does a "Rainbow Shield" move (Creates a rainbow circle around her body) and fires out bullets, so I don't believe it is possible to attack her.

The height of the tower is under 8000 metres. In fact you were pretty close to the top it stops at the very random 7767 metres. Your always near the top when you see the word Taito spelled out and you have a crystal type mountain structure to climb/jump up.

@Gentleben: thanks. I just ran through the game. Beat the robot with 1041sec left, made it to the top with 293sec. I even brought in player 2 at the last second, thinking the game would want 2 players to get some sort of acceptable ending (it is a Bubble Bobble game after all) ... but she just kills you both.

Oh yeah - and I filmed it:

Hoping someone can figure out this whole 'ending' situation, because that was really lame.

If Gentleben got the gems in order and confirmed that didn't do anything different, the only thing I can think of in the game I missed were those green comets that appear on a couple of the levels. I doubt hitting them would do anything different though.

Holly really had you in a corner climbing the final section there. Sometimes she totally spams with her bullets and floatly things that surround her and other times you can just easily climb up.

I attempted inviting a second player into the game at the last moment as well and got no joy. I've noticed the green comets on a couple of levels but I doubt they would change anything in the final outcome. I'm beginning to think Taito just screwed up big time on the ending of this game. Talking of the 2 players while it's fun to play you totally have to be in tandum since if 1 player is left behind and the bottom of the screen catches you up you loose 30 seconds. I think a speed run/building up of time would be really tricky.

I think Taito should have offered some extra downloadable areas like with Bubble Bobble Plus or fix the ending. Is there an email address we can all complain to?

P.S- Holly is a TTT (Total Tower Tease) and I'm doing TGI' Fridays on 4th July in Birmingham-wanna join me for cocktails and bitchin'?

Yeah, it really did suck getting cornered like that. I thought I had a system because the last time I climbed right up that section without getting hit. But those satellite things really suck. My housemate certainly provided some interesting commentary - I think his whining made the video a little better actually.

I'm with you on thinking that Square Enix / Taito probably just blew it on the ending. Something really doesn't feel right about it though. It would be nice to get some clarification straight from the horse/s.

While I'm okay with the fact that they went with developing an all new game that is nothing like the original, but they really just missed a lot of the spirit of the original. I was watching some video of the original arcade version via MAME on YouTube, and it really makes you realize how different Towering Adventure is. I'd really like to see the arcade version pop up on WiiWare for sure, but I doubt that will happen.

Thanks for the invite for the fourth, but I can't join you in Birmingham this year - although I should be in the UK sometime in 2010!

Subject: Rainbow Islands Towering Adventure Wiiware

Dear Taito,

I recently downloaded youtr Rainbow Islands Towering Adventure wiiware game and really enjoyed it. But upon completing the game (destroying the final Boss robot and also beating Holly to a race upwards) I was annoyed to discover the ending I got was the same ending you get if you fail to beat Holly to the top.

I was wondering if the story to this game has such a poor ending, or is there maybe somthing I have missed?

Gentleben

and the reply:

Dear Mr. Gentleben

Thank you for your email.
We have 2 endings in the game and what you have seen is “good ending”.
Another ending, “bad ending” can be seen if you fail to beat the bosses in the 7 areas.

Best regards
Taito Corporation Europe
