I have no idea. I've watched all the videos and read all the reviews. I don't get it. The game looks boring. So I'm wondering too; what's the big deal with this game?

Playing it now on original difficulty. IT'S AWESOME.

It's the best game EVER (okay, it and Mother 3 tie)!

I wondered the same thing, until I tried the freeware version. Then I learned what I'd been missing out on.

Ok, understood, but why is this a good game?

It's like Metroid (NES) but with a deep storyline, humorous characters, catchy music, a variety of weapons and save points.

This game is hailed as pretty much the pinnacle of indie one man free games go and it is a great time killer for anybody.

A great time killer? Sounds perfect for DSi...

Whether or not its a good game (which personally I think it is), it is a huge accomplishment as indie games go. The entire game and everything in it was created by a single person over 5 years, and offered as a free download on PC. That takes dedication. I'm putting my 1200 points in just for that.

Loving it. As soon as I started playing I thought the controls were way too floaty for my taste, which would affect my enjoyment. Then I realized you could shoot in four directions and I got swarmed by enemies, and I realized the floaty controls were not only justified, they were perfect for what they expected you to do.

Veeeery much enjoying this. And glad I waited for the WiiWare version.

Brutus has the right idea. You start playing (or watch someone else play) and it doesn't look like much... but if you stick with the game it ends up being really enjoyable. Well, at least that's how I felt from the relatively short time I spent with the PC version. Really looking forward to playing through the entire thing on Wii now that it's released.

I think the floaty controls also add to the strange, dream-like quality of the game.

Yes, Cave Story really is that good of a game. Everyone should download it on WiiWare. It is the definitive version of the game.

Check out my classy comics.

I'm probably one of the few here who think it looks boring.

As a longtime fan of the game, honestly I think it's actually not that great until you're done all the fetch quests and backtracking that's required in the first little bit. But then there's a point where things just start to get awesome (about 2ish hours in or so) and never really let up. I got to that point tonight and was getting really into it, but then I realized I'd missed one tiny tiny thing that I needed to get the best ending. The sad thing is, this isn't the first time I've done this. I've forgotten this one very tiny, crucial and irreversable step many times on the PC version.

:/

Oh well, guess who's starting a new file tomorrow.

It looks boring from the screenshots and such, yes. But I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most intensely difficult action games you'll ever play

Its just a really well made game. Depending on your tastes it might not look like much but play a while and most should join in on praising the game. Its old school in some ways but creative and modern in others. Its just a landmark in indie gaming so much that many indie games got called "cave story clones" for a while.

Not everyone will think the hype is justified but I think most will once they play it. Also, the hype was gained not just by devs or publishers promising great things and showing cool videos but by people actually playing the freeware version and loving it.

I think two things while playing this
1) It's Metroid meets Earthbound (I have no idea why lol)
2) Why can't it have eight way shooting?

Still, it's fun. I think it might be a bit overhyped but then again, we paid $12 for it as opposed to it being free; so as a free game it would be one of the best freeware games ever, but as a game that is paid for it's just a really good, solid game if that makes sense to you.

Haven't posted in a while, but I felt compelled to here. This version of Cave Story is highway robbery. 12 dollars is just a rip-off--no ifs, ands, or buts. The supposed included DLC is a complete joke. There is absolutely almost no added content of any sort--Curly mode (playing as another character) is identical save for a few random insertions of text. Hard mode is the exact same game bereft of Health Capsule Upgrades/the missile launcher weapon. Boss rush is the only addition. The music isn't good, the port job is horrible, there are typos everywhere, and overall I'm yet again boned by an absurdly overpriced hackjob of a port. Judged on its merits as a free game its great. Judged against every other potential expense of 12 dollars, its below middle of the pack. DL the original and donate some money to Pixel--Nicalis deserves nothing but contempt.

For me, the second i booted it up i loved it. It reminded me of the first time i picked up a controller and also reminded me of why i enjoy playing games in the first place. So this is a special game for me personally. I can see someone not enjoying it if they don't enjoy 2d side scrollers ,but i do so i don't think it's over hyped at all and it really is a honest masterpiece.Just to be able to play this on a Nintendo system alone makes it even more better and should say alot about it's charm and playability.
