I recently played through Cave Story and absolutely loved it from start to finish. In all reality, it is a game that probably could have been done on the actual NES hardware without much difficulty (not that I know this for sure, but I would assume this to be the case). So my question to you is: How high would you rank Cave Story if it would have been released for the NES?
Personally, I don't think there are too many games that would come in above it...maybe only Super Mario Bros. 3, Kirby's Adventure, and The Legend of Zelda. What do you think?

that said, if it worked properly, I do believe CS would rank pretty high amongst NES games.

I never had any problems with the game crashing. This is actually the first I've ever even heard of that. Definitely a shame.

A) It does work perfectly on Wii for some/the majority of people. It has no problems on the PC, and the PC version is the original so Cave Story can be judged on that. The WiiWare version adds unnecessary and even sometimes negative extras (such as worse new music and glitches). That said, it is still the definitive version of the game, and the controls make it easily my favorite. I agree that it is a shame that some/the minority people are experiencing glitches, but this is Nicalis' fault, not Studio Pixel's. B) Now to the topic at hand. Cave Story is easily my favorite 8-bit game ever, though I haven't played many "classic" NES games, such as Kirby's Adventure and The Legend of Zelda like you mention.
I'm glad that somebody else thinks so highly of Kirby's Adventure. I personally think it's the best NES game. I still think, in it's original PC form, it could have been done on the NES.

Cave Story is incapable of being rendered on a NES, not because of the quality of the graphics, but because of the number of colors. NES sprites were usually around 3 colors (4 tops), and tiles were around there too. It's obviously more complex than that, though, and I don't pretend to fully understand it, haha. (also, the screen resolution is not the same as a NES game either. CS is 320x240, and NES games are 256x240)
If you'll notice in Von Kaiser's picture, Kirby's Adventure uses a lot of old-school tricks. The tree, hud, and apple all use the same three colors, Kirby uses the same colors as the sky, and then the foliage all use the same colors too. You don't see these techniques used in Cave Story - at all.
Could you guys compare it to any other game(s) so I could get a feel for it? I know very little about it, I'm a old school gamer grew up with the NES if that helps.
Probably at #1. There's actually a story in the game, the gameplay is fantastic, and the length of the game is well laid-out. However, it's a bit unfair to compare a NES game to a game made in 2004, even if they are both 4MB.
