I'm stuck on 1-4 right now lol but am definitely having fun with it.

Do wish there were checkpoints though =/

Clarification: Getting !! is not always the same as getting perfect. On some of the early levels, all you have to do to get perfect is get all of the gold on the regular stage and the bonus stage. However, for most of the rest of the game there are some optional ways of getting more points (spring boards, kicking stuff, jumping off those target bots). You need to do all of these things whenever possible in addition to getting all the gold in order to get perfect.

Beat Zone 1's boss, and frankly, it wasn't that hard. Sure I died a few times but you just need to time it.
2-4 atm.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

Something about the game is making it so that I don't get frustrated as easily, even ater dying continuously. Can't wait to see the rest!

Nice to see I'm not alone here! Most of the time I just manage a sharp intake of breath and then it's right back into it again. I cannot tell you how many times I replayed 1-11. In the end I decided to forego getting all the gold and that made it more do-able because pursuit of gold or the pluses (I love the music enhancement and I simply HAVE TO GET THE RAINBOWS) is normally what gets me dead.

Apparently the Japanese release won't be for months so it's going to be awhile before I play this again (all my other Bit.Trip games are on the Japanese system and I can't bear to have them split across two machines), but I'm hoping to get some hands-on with the fifth game when I visit the Gaijin Games' studio in Santa Cruz in a few weeks, so that makes it all better.

I prefer New Adventure Island's system where you get three lives and a checkpoint halfway. If you make it past the checkpoint with all lives intact you get three attempts at the second half of the level. You invariably fail to complete it anyway and end up back at the beginning several times, but it rids itself of some repetition by allowing you to take a break from doing the first half of the level over and over again.

This system couldn't really be switched into Runner because it would make the first two zones too easy, but in the last levels I was longing for it. However if a checkpoint system was used then the earlier levels could have been made to be tougher, reducing the amount of filler you have to sail through on each attempt. This would have been more enjoyable for me personally, but I guess that's not what Bit.Trip's about.

I do love this game but I couldn't justify giving it a perfect score simply because in my opinion New Adventure Island and Tomena Sanner are both very similar and better games. The only thing Runner has over them is presentation and music. However I think if neither of those games existed, I'd be giving Runner 5/5 because it's an awesome game and I wouldn't have anything better to rate it against.

The difficulty curve is really weird with the game, because I had trouble on 1-11 and more so the first Boss (man was he annoying!), but now I am blowing through World 2. I love the visuals of World 2, so it's a shame it's passing so fast

Alright, my review of this game. I finished it with a ! in every level. I think I can't control myself and need to collect everything in the bonuslevels (!!) and even go for perfects, but I'm not sure, yet.

First the good:

  • The music is great. Even the one you make by jumping and collecting stuff. I especially love the music in World 3, that's by far my favorite world anyway.
  • The gameplay is great. The controls are tight and it plays really well. I like all the extra's you can do like slide, kick and block. This all makes for a real challenge and a fun experience.
  • The levels are well designed. Especially world 3. There are some awesome obstacles thrown your way that require perfect timing.
  • I love the graphical style. World 3 looks the best and world 1, even though it's dull, looks good too.

Now the bad:

  • World 2 suck, graphic wise. I lost count of how many times I walked into a comet just because I didn't spot it. The background is way to busy in this level and the colors could have been better too. Red comets in a red tinted background. Really? In the beginning I though I was making the baskets move by jumping on the trampolines. I definately don't like World 2.
  • The bonus levels are terrible. There extremely boring, there is no music to pump you up and after you die or miss something, you can't restart. You have to play the level before the bonus all over again, get all the gold and then you can play the bonus level again. It's really, really annoying if you're playing to get all the gold and perfects. My suggestion, remove the bonus levels and after getting all the gold in World 1, 2 and 3, unlock a special bonus world that works the same as the other worlds. Now, I'm in serious doubt to spend time trying to get !! and perfects. I'm afraid the reward won't be very satisfying considering all the frustration that lies ahead.
  • Some levels are very long and it's terrible to die just at the end and have to start all over. I don't mind or care for smaller levels, but with the bigger ones, it's really annoying and frustrating. You perfected the beginning because you are doing it over, and over, and over again. Some checkpoint midway like in every Mario game would be great.
  • Where the hell is the boss in World 3? The bosses in World 1 and 2 were fun. Not really difficult, but fun to do. But why isn't there one in World 3. I expected something epic, but was extremely, extremely disappointed.

So in conclusion:
I think it's a great game. It was fun, looked great and the music was awesome (especially in world 3). But the bad points really weights heavy in my opinion and some are extremly annoying. So a 10/10, not at all. For me it's more like 7,5/10.

Uhoh, here I go...

Visuals: Fantastic retro style which jumps off the screen. Zone 1 & 2 were lovely to look at but Zone 3 seems a bit bland so far (I'm at 3-3).
Audio: The music is wonderful, my favourite part of the game by far. Toe tapping electro-goodness.
Control: Extremely tight and very responsive, a real plus considering the speed at which you have to react.
Gameplay: What funking gameplay? This is so dull! It's a glorified memory-test with next to no challenge. It's not a case of if I'll beat a level, just when. I am not using any skill here, in fact, my subconscious is doing all the work whilst I think about my shopping list, or what monster I need to hunt next, or the weather, or blah-de-blah. I feel like I'm just entering a passcode to the next level, if I get a button press wrong or mis-time it, meh, I'll just try again. Minutes later, level done! Trial, error, repetition, memorization!
Longevity: I can't really comment on this just yet as I'm not finished, but it definitely seems too short and easy. I spent a whole hour memorizing playing 1-10 & 1-11, then, whizzed through the entirety of Zone 2 in the same time. Sighs

As you can probably tell, I don't like it. I will finish it just so I can Untitled it and never look at it again.

Beat was way better!!!

Rawr!

It's hardly skill-less, Machu. You need timing and rhythm, too, which not everyone has. I don't understand why people break a game down to its individual parts. Bit Trip is not about any of these things. It's about their synthesis.

I second all of this except the walrus face.

Come on, friends,
To the bear arcades again.

@Adam: I knew my view wouldn't be popular, and because of that I didn't really wanna share it. I didn't feel as though I was using any skill, I just pressed buttons to coincide with on-screen prompts. Pink thing - press d-down, red blob - press A, mineral thingy - press 1, now do it a bit faster, blah blah, continue, blah.

I'm glad everybody else enjoyed it so much but I took nothing from it, apart from the odd yawn mid-level.

I flew through worlds 1 and 2, but The Gauntlet is soooooo kicking my a** right now for srs. i love it, though, because it gives me the chance to go back and perfect everything, and i've noticed in the bonus levels (if i make it to them) that after all these tricky jumps i've had to complete successfully in the actual game, the jumps in the bonus levels are getting easier and easier.

@'Chu: don't feel bad because you don't like it and it seems like everyone else does. it's like the other three games... some people will love one, and others will hate it. I love Beat and Core (Core is my favorite, though it's currently taking a back-seat to Runner, holy crap), but Void irritates me to no end, but i know there are others who despise Beat and/or Core and thought Void was the awesomest thing to ever hit the Bit.Trip series. ymmv, y'know? :3

@tbd: Thanks, but I do feel bad, I was really looking forward to playing this. To be honest, I'm a bit stunned by the massive 'meh' that took over whilst playing. Oh well, NEXT!

Dah, this will work.

y'know, not all of us have beaten the game... i, for one, would've liked to have been surprised about the third boss (or lack thereof).
