The Wii U eshop has been down for over 10 hours now due to unscheduled maintenance so what on earth is taking Nintendo so long bringing the services back online and why haven't they mentioned anything to the public? Is it a huge update or was the eshop hacked? What are your thoughts?

Hmm, I was wondering the same thing myself...I hope it wasn't hacked or anything. Maybe the eshop is overloaded by masses of people downloading One Piece: World Red...LOL.
I was wondering the same thing too. Been trying to get on since 6:30 est to download One Piece.
My logical side says that the server could of crash, my illogical side says the eshop is being plundered by pirates.
A dying animal struggles, thrashes and howls in protest as its life torn from it. To see this in action, watch Animal Planet. The same thing happens when a video game is or isn't released. To see this in action, stay here.

As @ogo79 said, the SNS-RZ-USA is a prime giveaway that it's not a legit retail cart.
And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)
They're finally implementing the rare downloads program, but it's taking so long because they're preparing the servers to calculate the money that'll go into @ogo79 's bank account.
They're laying groundwork for SNES and GBA VC. Cross-buy is becoming a reality!
Why do I set such high expectations? It was probably some bozo from Nintendo who thought it was funny to flip a switch and shut down the eShop. What a jerk. -_-

It's obvious that they're merging both eShops completely, so you can buy Wii U games on your 3DS and it will start downloading on your Wii U and vice-versa. The catch is that you still have to buy Virtual Console games twice for each system. Now both versions are visible on one system!

Yet I could totally see Nintendo doing it too. Anyways, maybe it has something to do with the Elite gifts for Club Nintendo?
