What I don't understand is why do people treat 7 or 8 out of 10 like a 1 or a 2? I mean its very rare that a game will get ten but so often not just on this site but other sites as well if a game gets a 7 or 8 people bash the reviewer like it got a 1 or a 2.

I think only a few people who have a small understanding of scoring systems in general think that way. Or perhaps by some people who only want what's considered the best of the best because they don't buy many games and don't want to risk branching out and trying something new.
One of my favorite game franchises falls under the 6-8 scores according to most critics, but I don't care, I still love the games.

@munchakoopas If you apply your own values to someone else's scoring system, then you are going to miss out on the intended message. It's silly to redefine numbers how YOU want when they are already clearly defined by this site.

I suppose so. Sometimes we disagree with that person's scoring system and feel the number should be higher/lower. I don't arbitrarily impose my system nor do I feel I need to. I was just stating how I feel the scoring system would be for me. That's if I was a game critic.

But in your book 1-5 is basically the same score. You're rendering half of the numbers useless. May as well go on a 1-5 scale in that case. If we're going to use 10 numbers, it's nice to have all of them mean something.

I like Nintendolife's scoring scale quite a bit. It's not arbitrary. It helps explain the difference between a 1 and a 5, which in your book would just be called "failed games".

Yes, my book. 1-5 failed. You set out to make a game, you wanted to complete certain goals, provide fun gameplay or whatever but you failed because it came out badly unfortunately. the lower the number to ME only tells me it gets worse, but it's still garbage. Its like polishing a turd. It's still a turd. I could assign the value verbally. 1= **** 2= almost **** , etc etc. but what's the point as you go lower in the scale. Anyways this is all just my opinion.

I only come here for the occassional piece of news, and mostly reviews. Particulary eshop reviews. But it drives me nuts when most of the eshop reviews basically give the games bad grades.

Chariot a 7? Maze and that Tank game getting failing scores? Etc.

Where are gamers sense of fun these days? On the site I come from (vgchartz) it is the same. Unless it is Shovelnight or a Nintendo game, no one wants to play anything. Reviewers do no help with their inability to have fun or be surprised anymore.
Many of these eshop games are fun for high scores, community on miiverse and the price. But if they do not have as much content and quality of a Zelda title, it seems critics will pan it.

Learn to have fun again!

I'm fairly sure that Meme Run and Maze deserve the scores that they got. Maze especially if its anything like its predecessor game The Letter.

Let's not get carried away and compare Meme Run to Maze. As someone who has played Maze in full, I can say it's an enjoyable game miles ahead of both Ninja Pig's game, and TreeFall's own The Letter.

Why not download it so you can have an informed opinion? Maze is only $2.99, and you may be surprised to find that it's enjoyable - I was surprised.

Meme Run on the other hand is an overpriced game that can actually be classified as broken. It's in a class all its own.

True, and that's totally fine so long as opinions are informed. Too many gamer's have fallen into the sad habit though of trashing games that (by their own admissions) they've never played.

I just can't comprehend why people that would like something like The Letter. coming from someone who has played The Letter. Seriously someone sit down with me and have a discussion listing why they enjoy the game, I just can't understand. I haven't played this one though, but I still couldn't understand why someone thought $4.99 for this was a good idea.

Edit: I also should just say right now games like this, Maze and The Letter make me so angry is because they look EXACTLY like games that we make in college in quick bursts and that angers me. I mean I don't want to dis myself, but I'm in no way a competent game designer, so I see something I could do fairly easily I just nod my head.

The Letter's atmosphere and tension was great. Haven't played it much, or possible at all, since the last patch but I felt it was a good and fun experience. It was very similar to my experience in Gone Home.

....Is that it? I mean it could of been a great game, honest to god it could. (Don't you dare say patches can save it that boat seems to have sailed far away). But I just don't think that is enough for a game. I totally understand defending a game that everyone hates, heck I defend Megaman Battle Network Transmission and Metroid Other M, but there is usually more than that to defend it and it usually pertains to the gameplay itself. I mean, atmosphere is great and all its what made Galaxy go that extra mile, but...come on there has to be more than that.

The gameplay is more about what you experience and not what you do in the game. So yes the Atmosphere and tension is what made it an enjoyable experience for me. I liked the exploration elements that were in there, it gave the Player the sense to take their time while the horror elements made the Player hurry. Those conflicting mechanics made an enjoyable experience for me. I don't think it is a game that should be played frequently but I do think it is worth the $2 I spent on it.

This is super long, but you should read just to know how I truly feel about the game. This is about as short as I could make it and still drive the point home, I could go on but I haven't done reviews in a long time and I don't plan on doing one here in depth.

I don't know, to me it felt like it was an over glorified "I SPY" game. I'm going to go through every level I remember. But I do understand tension...but there was nothing that made you feel tense or nothing that you were honestly to be afraid of, literally nothing happens. In the patch a bear head spins around. (Okay to be fair I thought the bear was a nice touch....but there is no real reason for it to be there and it does nothing but whisper something like "help me" or something. Once again, nice touch but it doesn't amount to much of anything at all. And after the first time it isn't creepy anymore, it was to prevalent.)

Level 1: Find The Letter/Key (its hilarious that it says that and then puts a GIANT hidden letter in the corner of the room promptly confusing users when they first play the game.)

Level 2: Find 3 objects being plans, knife and test tube. First off, how the hell did he know he was supposed to be looking for plans and when did it ever establish in the poorly written comic sans that he could do anything with those clues or knew anyone that could.

LOADING...

Level 3: Find the key and get into the room. (The little amount at atmosphere it had dies at this moment because of that stupid sad face on the wall...I mean come on man, there is such a thing as trying to be subtle).

LOADING...

Level 4: Wait....just freaking wait for it..(You can't defend this part...you absolutely can not, there is no tension here what so ever. You know Halloween was an indie movie that did nothing happening a lot better for its I don't know...payoff and actual tension created.)

LOADING.............

Level 5: Find last letter and be extremely angry at plot twist. (I honestly wasn't angry by this part, I just thought it was god damned hilarious. Seriously, it was SO BAD that it was good. I don't necessarily know if that's a good thing but its there.

LOADING PATCH....

Level 6: (Honestly didn't play this one personally) Spinning bear head......................wooooooo, this game is the next P.T. guys.

TLDR

Anyways, let me sum up something perfectly clear this game I think is absolute and complete garbage. I have played it and I do have a constuctive critique about it, but there are so many better options...but none of those options were on the Wii U (yet) besides ZombiU a full retail game, so if anything it showed that Wii U owners were starved for a horror game. But with Lone Survivor, Master Reboot (on sale right now) and the upcoming Slender the Arrival there are so many options. I get it, people wanted a Slender type game but this was not an appropriate substitute. I know you'll probably think that you could draw a lot of my critique at Gone Home too, but Gone Home is a much better game and I could explain that too if you want, but this comment is freaking huge as it is.

Actually there's a jump scare in the last level.

A 2D image of skulls and bones appears out of nowhere when you walk into a room.

It's both surprising and hilarious. At least it was for me, because I was looking at the ground when it happened and I could only see a corner of the image.
