Yeah, though metroid is a huge influence on us,we chose not to mimic all of its mechanics. Imo it's important to see what gameplay mechanics work well in context. Early development was definitely the most fun part as it allows you to experiment s lot- We started out with the intention of having a health system with upgrades for instance, but realized pretty early on that it would work better with our type of game if we used checkpoints/one hit deaths. The kid is supposed to feel rather small and helpless unil he gets a few power ups. We started out with fall damage as well, but the idea was that you'd get an item that shielded you against it very early on. This was cut partly because we shied away from a health system-early parts would be too frustrating if you outright died from falls- and partly because it was valid for such a short period of the game that it just seemed to muddy the rules of what you could and could not do. It feels a little bit weird not to have an in-game explanation for why you can fall 2000ft without taking damage, but people don'y seem to question it:)
@Spoony_Tech I think both games look good, but you were comparing Teslagrad to Metroid so I was just saying that there's another game that looks a lot more like Metroid. I can see how Teslagrad has some Metroidish elements to it, but I actually like how different it is to Metroid. I mean, I like Metroid and all, but that doesn't mean I want every game to be Metroid. Teslagrad seems to be much more unique and creative. In the end, though, I'm looking forward to both.
@ollibald You're doing the characters animations for the game? It looks really good!
Reven is a totally weird prospect of a game, that trailer continues to impress me in terms of editing.
the less said about those flat lifeless enemies, the better
I am loving this game, getting plenty of Metroid vibes from the exploration, and the lenient checkpoints are letting me go nuts with my exploration and try crazy ideas. The art is marvelous as is the music. Only played for about an hour, but considering I originally planned to just spend half an hour I'd say the game gets a recommendation from me
I love this game's boss battles so much. The bosses themselves are really cool, character design wise, and I keep having those "Aha!" moments every time I figure out how to hurt them or dodge a certain attack. That satisfaction doesn't go away for the rest of the however many times I have to retry the fight. They're honestly the best part of the game so far.
"Good. Everyone's together. Pyrrhon loves a party." "...It's funny because marriage is terrible!" If you know the origin of both of those quotes, then you're awesome! Songs are like hugs that mouths give to ears. Dreams are easy to achieve if hope is all...
Beat it in 10 hrs. Could've been longer and the map is glitchy, controls need a bit to get used to due to the original magnet physics.
There is stuff to collect for a special ending hidden extremely well. Unfortunately there's nothing telling you where to look.
Other than that it's a pretty game with a fantastic presentation, no in-game loading/saving screens, beautiful animation and soundtrack, great bosses, and challenging puzzles.
Didn't feel like a Metroidvania though, as there are just 4 special abilities (and 3 are found in the beginning of the game) and no other significant items to collect, so it's a 2D puzzle platformer rather than a 2D action adventure.
In what way is the map glitchy? All I've noticed so far is that it got some time to get used to, since it's just an overview with no details.
BTW, I read several user reports on Miiverse that there are some Nintendo game references subtly hidden in the artwork (for the Wii U version only). I haven't discover them so far, although I've passed rooms where they should be.
I also just picked up the fourth power up. Now I'm not sure where to go lol. It kinda opened up the whole game. I played far too long last night. 2 in the morning is too long.
Just finished it and I gotta say, I liked how the story was told through the thingies you collect(I thought they were scrolls but now, maybe power units?) and the play things which could be rushed past if you wanted, or watched over and over again, though the last one did make me nervous
Magnus(I think he was the level designer) is a monster for the electric maze thing in the main room of the tower, spent an hour on that
Now, I go back for the two collectables i missed somewhere
as for issues, it froze on me twice and the map does glitch a bit when you get to the electric maze(keeps showing you the tree room instead) but in the end, I do recommend it
Edit: aaaaaand got them, while going through looking for them I noticed that the sound acts funny in the room with the giant bull
anyway, I recommend you get all 36 of those things, the good ending is much more satisfying than the other
