Is it overrated? Possibly, but it's still one of the best 2D platformers released in years, possibly even better than La-Mulana. It's a great game that would have become a classic like Super Mario Bros. 3 or Mega Man II if it were released during the (NES) era.
Come on guys, are you now saying that OoT is overrated? What's next? Super Mario Bros. is overrated? It seems like every good game released prior 2000 is overrated now
And more on topic, Shovel Knight isn't overrated . It's THAT good
Get back to playing games and stop prematurely posting on message boards is the best advice I can offer. Do you need our permission to dislike it? Should we be shocked and offended? Can our Shovel Knight experiences now be deemed a fallacy since you played the first level and failed to enjoy it? Am I a jerk? Yes, most probably.
There are many issues at play whether you or I, or anyone else, may or may not enjoy both good and bad games at any given time. Rather than asking us whether you've been duped, I'd suggest looking inward and playing on to attempt to discover the game's virtues. Not that you have to, as you are of course allowed to dislike it... Just a suggestion to get the most out of your purchase. (And please think twice about posting after playing one level of a game.)
I haven't been following the thread, but it sounds like the OP had no clue what he was getting into in the first place, so I wouldn't say he's been "duped", he's just a dolt for buying into hype without actually figuring out what it is people like about the game beforehand (or even understanding what the basic point of the game was). There's nothing wrong with hype, but it is a problem if you don't know what the hype was about in the first place.
Retro-styled 2D platformer with a twist, I thought, I've just not seen a twist yet.
I, too, over-exaggerate like a numpty and make out the OP gauges the quality of an entire game based on its intro / tutorial level event though he didn't. It frees up a lot of time for posting on message boards!
Youch! You guys need some of this:
I'm not saying it's a crap game. I'm just saying I've played the first level and was decidedly underwhelmed and so am wondering what other people found with it and whether I can expect it to improve if I plough more time into it.
I'm lucky (or cursed) enough to have a lot of great games to play at the moment and am struggling to decide where to put my time and in what order. I think it's perfectly sensible to sound out others on this, regardless as to how much of the game I've played. I'm better off finding out now if it's not going to change than if I persevere with it to 75% completion say.
On the 'overrated' issue. It's one thing to label a 1 year old game as overrated, it's a completely different thing to label a 15 year old game as overrated, unless that was an opinion formed within 1 year of its release.

Um...no. It's Retro-style platformer that's as good as the games made back then. The "twists" are subtle improvements largely based on more modern ideas. It's "retro" in the actual sense of the word - It's old ideas made new again. I'm not sure what you were expecting as far as new ideas go, and I keep getting the feeling that you didn't either, which is the problem.
Also, yes, it will get better, just like almost every game ever...except maybe Resonance of Fate, because Tri-Aces is terrible at making games like that...anyways, there are subweapons to find, new powers to upgrade, new gimmicks in every level, as well as loads of cheats and secrets. You haven't even scratched the surface. This is all basic info a quick google search and maybe a trailer could've gotten you.

Cool, and you've received your answer. Nearly everyone says it gets better. However, nearly everyone also said they really liked the game, so I don't know if that will be too reassuring for you.
Also, I never thought it would be a "retro 2D platformer with a twist". What was the twist? I thought it was just going to be a good retro 2D platformer, like the ones we remember.
A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by every pebble on the road.
Then again, Ocarina of Time is definitely not overrated, it's aged, and that's competely different.
The mechanics aged poorly which caused the experience to be less than what people were claiming it would be. Sounds like it aged poorly and is overrated. But as has been said, "every game is considered overrated by someone."
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
