Can't believe when I did a search for this I came up with nothing.

Loving it so far. If you love 2d Metroid then you might as well get this as it sure seems Nintendo is not going to give us one anytime soon or ever. Also love the weapon progression. It doesn't take forever to find new stuff.

It looks incredible, I just wish I had the cash to download this gem...

Are the graphics and soundtrack at the same level of quality as, say Shovel Knight?

@Rukiafan7 The graphics are good but more on par with the NES. I thought Shovel Knight look more like it was in between snes and nes. It really does look like the original Metroid. It has its visual flair though if you change the video setting to 2. As for the soundtrack to me it's nothing special. Not bad but not rememberable either.

@Spoony_Tech
I am really loving it too! I agree that the graphics look more 8 bit, but things blow up really nice, with lots of effects and chunks of meat flying around everywhere. I will try changing the video settings.

I got AXIOM VERGE before the sale ran out. I'm at 50% items and 70% map. This has a great range of unique weapons and items. Fantastic world design, beautiful 12-bit style graphics, the story is quite interesting, and the music adds to the dark atmosphere a lot. This is more than just a great Super Metroid clone, it's only taking the formula and does it's own original thing with it.

ACK

It just makes me want to replay Super Metroid. Axiom Verge does not scratch a Metroid itch for me, it's just not in the same league. Or even close, really.

Taking the aesthetics out of the equation, the feeling I get from the gameplay is more Contra mixed with Castlevania. I would not recommend it to all Metriod fanatics, as I wouldn't expect them to be automatically impressed. Similar to how the "Igavanias" don't compare to the Metroid formula and level design, despite being affectionately referred to as Metroidvanias.

Axiom Verge is a neat little thing and fun for what it is, but not really worth remembering. Not in the same way as (retro) indie classics like Shovel Knight and Cave Story. And certainly not in the same category as the true classics.

Of course this is just my opinion, but I've found the praise heaped on Axiom Verge to be overblown and instead I've found a lot of the people told they will love it aren't thrilled with it, or even worse. It doesn't appear to be nearly as widely beloved as Shovel Knight, for instance, despite having similar buzz.

@ACK: You're not the only one with that opinion, and combined with the fact that it's more expensive than most games on the eShop, I nearly missed out.

I still thought the game looked interesting enough... and so I got it anyway. And I'm glad I did.

At the moment it's still growing on me, I'm playing for the first time (on Normal, 11h 34mins in, 66% items, 80% map) and I'm absorbed in its deep and serious story and the overall theme and design.
If it continues that way for 5 more hours, then it easily is on par with Cave Story and Shovel Knight.

I completed Axiom Verge today.

First play stats:
100% items collected,
100% map discovered,
39 deaths,
18+ hours on the in-game timer.

Great puzzles, a few mindblowing secrets, and 20 awesome weapons! Well, 2 are forgettable, but still, 18 awesome weapons!!!! The final boss fight is quite memorable. It's rare to see such a beautiful well-designed 3D structure (in 2D!), all zoomed out Neo Geo like, when a giant "alien" warrior attacks from the outside.

My biggest concern with games these days are bugs, glitches, freezing.
And when there's a game like Axiom Verge, where glitches are an intended/designed part of the experience then it better not have any real glitches!

Thankfully my experience with the game was flawless, and it runs very smooth 99% of the time.
I know there's a bug (with an easy workaround) and it's adressed already. I didn't encounter it anyway, as for triggering it you have to be very specific.

This was great fun that can even surprise Metroid veterans! 9.3/10

PS. What ACK says about Axiom Verge is exactly what happened to me with Cave Story. Everyone was hyping it up to be the best thing ever. I heard things like "a true epic!" and when I beat it 12 hours later I thought "That's it?? Isn't it a tad too short for the next best thing ever?" The disappointment of it being way shorter than expected settled down and I took it for what it is and I still like it very much for the beautiful music, fluid gameplay, and charming characters, but I dislike it for having horribly obscure triggers for the other endings and too many missables.

Curious ... What controller are you playing with ? Really intrigued by this game and may pick it up Friday along with a few other titles

Spoony_Tech

@Bigskyorbust Just the gamepad actually. Really comes in handy even more so then most for the map and how easy it is to switch weapons. When I played off tv I really missed those options more then I realized.

So, what's the better Metroid clone? This game or Quacamelee?

btw, when I get my next paycheck, i am planning on getting Axiom Verge.

Spoony_Tech

@bezerker99 Why you have to go and ask that??

Both are great and after just haven beat this I would still lean towards Quacamelee. I like the action in Quacamelee more so but Axiom is more like Metroid if that helps. Both have a deep exploration side to them with this being even more deep. This one is a bit more puzzle oriented but the story while good isn't as good as Quacamelee's. Also while the visuals hold true to the original Metroid with a little flair here and there to let you know it's more then just 8 bit I prefer Quacamelee's visuals more.

This is all personal preference though as the next person could say Axiom is the better game and I couldn't disagree with them.
