It seems pretty silly to splurge like that just to hit a milestone. Waiting till a game you want goes on sale usually saves you $5 or more right there (I just got Stick it to the Man for $5 off, for example), and you don't have to spend $50 to do it. So unless you are really close, it doesn't seem worth it. After getting all the sale games I wanted, I only needed to spend $9.60 more to get another voucher, so I went ahead and got Pushmo World for $9.99 since that is by Nintendo and will likely never go on sale. I only got 4 or 5 vouchers over the last 2 years, but I saved a lot more money than extra vouchers would have been worth by waiting for sales.
I went ahead and got a $20 eShop card to put me over the edge (from $45 up to $50). All I needed was $5, but I was able to get a game on sale and then two others that I have been wanting for a while. Just not sure if I should spend my $50 on Wii U eshop (pretty sure I'll get more credit for it) or get something like A link between worlds- a game I've wanted forever and would be nice to have on my 3ds.

It takes 24 hours for the points to update on the site. Purchases made Today should still add points.

I'm afraid they extended nothing, I just checked the Italian site, same note about April 2015, but at the bottom of the page it still specify that you can gather points only until the end of 2014 (to which we just said goodbye, happy new year ^o^).
I guess the new note refers only to the time left for request the codes earned before the end of 2014, since technically the promotion is not over until also the exchange-points date is passed.

There's a simple test though to see whether it is truly over and that's of course buying something today and see if it appears tomorrow. I'll be trying this anyway simply because F-Zero GP Legend is easily one of my favourite GBA games of all time.

The points you've earned before the end of December can be exchanged for $5 eshop codes until March 31st. On April 1st, you won't be able to exchange points for codes. If you have codes, but you didn't use them, you have until June 30th.
