Since the old Xenoblade Chroncles thread is dead along with the Wii forum itself, I thought it'd be a good idea to start a new general discussion thread for the Wii U re-release of the game.

Has anyone noticed that the digital version of the game doesn't run very well? Certain boss fights and cutscenes suffer from excruciating drops in the frame-rate, sometimes the frame-rate drops to around 10 frames per second which never occurred in the disc version of the game, also I noticed that Nintendo actually balanced the difficulty a bit. Characters now level up much faster as far as I can tell.

I don't have a point of reference because this is my first playthrough, but I have noticed some significant stuttering I wouldn't expect to be natural in such an esteemed game.

It's still amazing, though.

Can you go into more detail on what exactly you mean by stuttering? At first impression that makes it sound like this Virtual console release has a problem the other versions simply... Don't. Which is really weird.
EDIT
Looking at the post above this seems to indicate that this is in fact, exactly what we are dealing with. I am... bummed for you that your first experience with this amazing title has been marred in such an unsightly way. Hopefully it will be patched soon.

@Indy83: Yeah, this game is still good, but it has several cringe-worthy performance issues in the digital version. Frame-rate dips, slowdows, and even occasional anomalies with the soundtrack such as the wrong music playing or the music temporarily cutting-out. The issues do go away if you download it directly to the system memory, however at 6.8 GB it's too large to do so with a basic model Wii U and uses up about 30% of the deluxe model's internal memory...

I figured it might have been this. I'm glad I own the disk version of the game, because my external hard drive is slooooowwwwwww. I get long smash attack loading times in Smash, and saving for any game on the hard drive takes extra long. I also had a glitch in Wind Waker that locked the game (chest wouldn't load fast enough), and putting the game on the internal memory fixed the issue. So I can confirm, an external hard drive can slow down games; it's (probably) not just Xenoblade.

The thing is I have no idea how to speed it up, or if it's even possible to improve hard drive performance.

I downloaded the game to my external drive, and I haven't experienced any issues with slowdown or frame-rate yet. I'll be on the lookout though.

Wait, it acts up on an external HDD only? It may be an issue with that. Unless it's the only game that acts up, then, yeah, a patch would be nice, assuming that can fix it.

And really, when a single games takes up a large percentage of the digital space on offer.... you have to wonder what the heck they were thinking when deciding 32GB was enough. Give us some elbow room...

Well, Xenoblade had a very agressive streaming engine no other game on wii comes close to. It was constantly streaming from disc. My wii was downright noisy when I'd play Xenoblade....

But that would have to mean, that the transfer speed from some of these hdd's is actually slower than the wii's disc drive...

It looks like the others in this thread addressed the issue... If it is a problem with external HDDs, that seems like more of a Nintendo issue because I shouldn't have to juggle storage to receive optimum performance because of weak read algorithms... Maybe that's just me, though.

THE GAME IS AWESOME, THOUGH! xD So much better than XCX so far. I just got the Monado.

Well the thing about that is I'm not sure what Nintendo is supposed to do in the case someone has a really slow HDD. I guess you could make the loading times longer and put everything into memory, but that might not be so simple, as it may involve revamping the entire back-end of how data is loaded for the game, and then that would involve testing to make sure it works, etc etc.

Basically, it's easier and better for Nintendo to put the burden on the HDD instead of editing the game's code which may or may not break the game in some obscure location that they didn't test. And there are a lot of locations in this game.

That being said, glad you're enjoying the game so far! There's a lot in store for ya!

No, you absolutely should not have to, and its a bummer thats the way things turned out.

But I feel the games many accolades will be readily apparent through the stumblings of this slightly botched vc release, and it seems you are already feeling the same.

Wonderful game. What I wouldnt give to be able to play it for the first time again. Games like these are far too few and between today.

Uh oh...Houston we have a problem, I just ran across a bug that occurs regardless of if the game is downloaded to the hard-drive or internal memory...

Spoiler alert!

When your party falls from Gallahad Fortress to the Mechonis' Fallen Arm the game completely locks up during the following cut-scene and there appears to be no way to prevent this from occurring...

Has anyone found a work-around to this issue?

I play directly off the Wii U storage and have noticed some frame rate drops...wasn't aware that this wasn't in the original version. It's noticeable, but doesn't really affect the gameplay by any means so it really doesn't bother me.

Absolutely loving the game, and think the gamepad is very well-suited to it. It's a shame about the low-res graphics...I would've liked a HD rerelease!

At least 2'8".

I uninstalled and reinstalled the game and the bug at Gallahad Fortress was fixed so if you experience any game-breaking bugs, it might be a good idea to do what I did.

@Veinychicken Uh...they don't ban members for making a new thread for an old topic, you know. They just lock the thread if they deem the new thread unnecessary, especially if the old thread has been dead for many months.

I beat the game again! The final scene is alot more dramatic during the first playthrough due to spoilers I won't discuss here. What did you guys think of the final scene and ending?

The final scene and ending I really liked.

The final quarter of the story leading up to it, I didn't!
