Hey everyone, I've tried searching the forum via the site search and google forum search and couldn't find anything related to the SNES controller for the Wii paired with the Wii U.

Untitled
I'm considering getting the controller because there's nothing like playing SNES games with the original controller. I've seen them on ebay for around $40-50.

I do have one question regarding the controller. Since there's no home button on the SNES controller, does the home button on the Wii mote still function the same way? Also how do you get to save states with only 8 buttons? Does the Wii mote do this as well?

I've created my essentials list of SNES games I had as a kid and I'm trying to collect them on the Wii U but there's some major gaps with the Square titles. Chrono Trigger, FF II, FF III, and Secret of Evermore/Mana. Even some odd ball games like Tetris Attacks and Zombies at my Neighbors aren't on there. Then there's the list of games that are only on the Wii like Super Mario RPG.

  • Castlevania IV ✓
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Contra III ✓
  • Cybernator ✓
  • Donkey Kong Country ✓
  • Earthbound ✓
  • F-Zero ✓
  • Final Fantasy II
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Final Fight ✓
  • Mario Kart ✓
  • Pilot Wings ✓
  • Secret of Evermore
  • Secret of Mana
  • Sim City
  • StarFox
  • Super Bomberman
  • Super Ghouls N' Ghosts ✓
  • Super Mario All Stars
  • Super Mario RPG
  • Super Mario World ✓
  • Super Metroid ✓
  • Super Punch Out ✓
  • Super R Type
  • Tetris Attack
  • The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past ✓
  • TMNT Turtles in Time
  • Yoshi's Island
  • Zombies Ate My Neighbours

And a final question would be if you think we'll see those Square RPGs any time soon. I know we won't see Yoshi's island in it's original form due to patent dispute on the graphic chip on the cart which is why we get the GBA version.

Be careful what you purchase, since I believe there are a fair number of cheap knock-offs floating around out there.

This is seen as a standard Classic Controller by the Wii or Wii U. That means that the Wiimote's Home button is still fully active just like it always has been when something was plugged into its expansion port, making it a moot point that this controller lacks such a button. All you lose is a tiny bit of convenience since you can't reach it via a button press with the controller that you're holding, but instead have to pick up the Wiimote that you're tethered to.

As for save states, I haven't paid much attention the few times that I've hooked my Club Nintendo SNES gamepad to my Wii U. But since I never noticed any issues with any of my various Classic Controller derivatives on my Wii U, I assume that I've successfully used my Wiimote as a pointer with all of them at one point or another while at the Wii U Virtual Console menu to save the state of the game, load save states, etc.

I think I'd of noticed a problem by now if there was one, since I've definitely regularly taken advantage of save states and button customization on the Wii U Virtual Console.

Square is odd about their backcatalog. So while I wouldn't dismiss the chance of it happening, I also wouldn't count on it. If they have any say with Super Mario RPG (Doubt it beyond perhaps Nintendo needing permission for the portrayal of the Square name and logo that appears), hopefully at least that one makes it out in the end. Not like Square has any reason to play hardball over it since they can't just go out and release it themselves. They either cut a deal with Nintendo and make a few dollars, or get nothing.

As for patent issues with the Super FX chip, that's rather impossible in recent years since all Super FX related patents have expired and entered the public domain quite sometime ago. But evidently judging by how often rights issues with the Super FX coprocessor has been alleged or passed off on the internet to explain the absence of Super FX emulation on the Virtual Console, it sure must sound like a good explanation to many people...

Thanks mate. Yeah I'd be ordering the official Nintendo club jp/eu controller and not a knock off. Why they don't just fire up the plastic molds and sell the controllers all the time is beyond me.

Here's to hoping Square/Nintendo gets their act together on VC titles.

The controller should come today and I scooped up a lot of SNES titles last night. One other puzzling thing is I noticed in the "not available here" thread that Final Fantasy VI (III) and Secret of Mana are both available in JP on the Wii U VC. This blows my mind lol. PLEASE Nintendo just translate the e-manual and throw the NA game up on the eShop!

I'd rather use the Game Pad or the Classic Controller. I don't have any nostalgia towards playing the original SNES controller. I was always buying new better controllers during the early 90s.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

So I've had the controller for about 4 days now and have already 96*'d SMW and 100% Link to the Past. Currently working on Super Metroid.

I gotta say if anyone is interested in properly rocking these classic SNES games, you gotta get this controller. They range between $40-50 used on Amazon. I already own a Wii Classic Controller but it just doesn't feel the same as the SNES controller.

I'm seriously having a blast rocking these old SNES titles. Everything feels the way it should and I'm having a blast.

Edit: the only drawback I've found is that I can't bring up the save state/reset sub menu with the controller or WiiMotein an SNES game. I still have to hit the Z2 button on the Gamepad. Not a big deal but kinda weird how you can't even pull it up on the WiiMote.

Someone on another forum made this nice pic showing the insides of an original SNES controller and the remade Wii controller.
