I think it's the way it's intended to be. As it not full screen on my system either.

They're not full screen.

Old games were all 4:3 ratio so, if they filled up your screen, you'd have to either stretch or crop the video.

Its normal, if you are experiencing quite large gaps at the top and bottom see if you TV has an overscan mode. Older software like PS2, Gamecube, Wii etc didn't use the full image so you end up with black bars up the top and bottom on newer HDTV's. To get around this turn the overscan function on, which basically zooms the image a bit to remove the borders. You won't be able to fix the borders on the left and right side because the games aren't widescreen. The Wii U is upscaling to 1080p (or whatever its set to), but in doing so it keeps the original aspect ratio. Most TV's don't allow you to stretch 1080p/720p images to a 4:3 fullscreen zoom. My Viera Plasma does but I like the images being displayed at their original aspect ratios myself. What you could try is to set the Wii U to 576i/480i or p, then your TV may allow to you stretch it out to full screen. Just be aware that this will effect Wii U software as well, I'd suggest you change it back to 1080p when playing Wii U software, otherwise the image being displayed are not HD, which will degrade quality significantly.

Personally, I'm glad Nintendo realized this time around that the original aspect ratio is the most authentic experience (well, outside of playing the original cart, I mean). Besides, when you stretch a 4x3 image for a HDTV, it doesn't look as sharp.

Well, yeah, it doesn't take up the whole screen, they were made in 4:3 aspect ratio, back before 16:9 even existed...

As I've kinda said in another thread I'd take this over the "authentic" experience. The authentic out-of-the-box SNES experience involves using an RF splitter to send a video to the TV via an analogue TV signal. RF because there was no point getting an AV cable at the time because the TV I was using didn't support it. Besides, neither of them will only really work to any playable level at all on an old CRT.... especially the RF option....

Even then if you're stretching this game out to 16:9 you're doing it wrong. I HATED the way my old TV insisted on stretching out Wii VC games to 16:9 and I'm elated that the Wii U handles it better.

No. There is a gap at the top and bottom even on the gamepad. I noticed this earlier and looked up at the tv to see if it was there, too. Which it was.

They weren't made for wide screen use.
