One of my all time favourite games. Neither the Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi series can even compare to Mario RPG.

My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

I wouldn't get my hopes up. There are large categories of games in the Wii U VC Japan library that are simply not available in the US Wii U VC library. For example: anything for the MSX, anything for the PC Engine, and anything by Square Enix. Since Super Mario RPG was a joint venture with Square Enix, I'd put it in the last category of VC games not available in the US.

I wish it was somehow illegal to release games only in Japan

I just play it on my Wii. It would be nice to play on the Game Pad, but I never did the conversion for many reasons (including the gamecube controller support) so I wouldn't pay for it twice anyway.

I hope it gets released eventually and I think it will. It's my favorite Mario RPG game. I downloaded Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and I don't think it's anywhere near as good.

I can totally tell it's the writing that makes me hate the Mario & Luigi series. It's way too campy and over the top. It always feels like a comedy first and a mario game second. I've yet to finish any of their games and I've had them for years.

I agree, and I don't think the characters and locations are anywhere near as compelling and interesting as Super Mario RPG. The bean village and bean prince, etc just weren't as likable as Mallow, Geno, etc and I loved the bosses in Super Mario RPG. It was still over the top and comedic but it just drew me in much more. It was also the game that got me interested in RPGs. I also don't like the fighting mechanics in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga as much. I never tried the original Paper Mario for the N64 but I hear it's one of the best. I owned Paper Mario Sticker Star for the 3DS and grew bored of it within an hour and ended up selling it back to Gamestop.

Paper Mario has similar mechanics to Super Mario RPG in some aspects (timed pressing of buttons returns, although it is simplified in the defense and items use), but the addictive system (damage = attack - defense) with very small numbers (you start with 1 and you end up with not much more than 8 unless using crazy badges combinations), the fact that you can choose the order of attack (and you have to use the right strategy not to lose turns), the badge system and many nuances (if you attack the pokeys with Kooper, they lose one of their segments, for example) make the battles incredibly interesting. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is even better, with the Paper Mario system, the audience that you have to impress to recharge star energy and that interacts with you (both positively and negatively, and if you don't battle well they go away), the stage which is for real, with elements of the scenes that can fall on Mario or the enemies, special effects that affects the battle and so on, and finally, even more nuances (Koops that can be flipped over, losing 1 defense point and the ability to move is really a gem).
I think you should give Superstar Saga more chances, its real-time actions (jump and hammer in defense) are interesting in that they allow you to interactively avoid or even counterattack, the Bros. moves are also a nice touch, especially with the split paths of the advanced moves. Finally , when you get Fire Hand and Thunder Hand you also have classic-RPG-like effectiveness towards these moves (or the contrary, as sometimes you even heal enemies!). And it also has nice touches (the Chomp Bro that become sad and go away if you defeat their chomps are really nice!).

EDIT: I was almost forgetting: In Paper Mario: the thousand-Year Door you can also choose who is in front (and this affect whether or not some enemies can attack Mario), the partners now have HPs and many more actions possible without using badges and the defense system is improved as well with a counterattack move that prevents damage and can be incredibly useful in some circumstances.

I really hope so! This is one of my all time favorite games. Quite possibly my very favorite. If it's on the Japanese VC then that at least gives me hope.

Yeah, I hope this comes outside of Japan too. But I won't be expecting it soon.

I think it might've of been part of the deal to get Cloud for smash. That might just be me.

The game has been out in Japan's VC for a while now so I'm not sure Cloud being in Smash really effects it.

I feel that it's very much a mistake to extrapolate from that, that this Nintendo/Square collaboration is very unlikely to be rereleased in the West after just being released in Japan.

Has turned out as expected.

Now let's start hoping to see SimCity reappear. I believe that's the last 1st party Wii Virtual Console download for the NES/SNES that has yet to reappear on the Wii U.

Yes the visuals are really boring sometimes. It was hard to get into and play on my Wii a few years ago

I'm not really a fan of Super Mario RPG. Its not stood the test of time well graphically or in gameplay.

I still downloaded it though, because its a Mario game. And its not a bad game. Just more dated than some other Super Nintendo games.

I have no nostalgia for this game. When I tried it, it bored me to tears.

Ah, finally. I claimed Super Mario RPG on the Wii Virtual Console as a Club Nintendo reward so that I could download it for $2 when it hit the Wii U Virtual Console.

Only took a little over two years for that to happen. Oh, Nintendo, you crazy.
