Fine by me since it's extremely unlikely that they'd ever release Super Mario All-Stars via the Wii U's Virtual Console.

Going this route with Super Mario Bros. 2 (and SMB3 down the road) provides an avenue for them to get these upgraded versions out on the Virtual Console without cutting into their profit margins (Selling four upgraded NES classics for $8 versus $21 for the 8 bit originals makes it easy to see why SMAS has never been made available on the VC).

These were the highlights of that collection as far as I'm concerned anyways. The remasterings for SMB and SMB2J, never ported to the GBA, weren't nearly as impressive and won't be missed on the Virtual Console.

That reminds me, I still want to play Super Mario Bros. 2. Should I play the NES version, or the Super Mario Advance version? I had the latter as a kid and could never get far, so it'd be like tackling some unfinished business...but is that worth paying extra for?

Advance is Better, but I already got the original from Club Nintendo so it's not worth it for me.

I'd hesitate to call this remastering (In either form) or the NES original as the better of the two, since I love both versions.

Both VC downloads offer save states that should help you out with your past troubles, so I'd base my decision on what you'd prefer. Do you want it looking and sounding like a classic NES game from the late 1980's, or something that seemed fully at home on the Super Nintendo back in 1993 where the audio/visuals were concerned?

The GBA port of the SuperNes game though, while making some good decisions, does have some drawbacks. The view is cropped a bit vertically leaving you a somewhat smaller view, although the area of your 16:9 screen that's filled will actually be greater due to the wider aspect ratio of the GBA. And the voice work is kind of annoying and a needless addition to many of Nintendo's SuperNes conversions on the GBA including this one.

But still, it's a fine take on the All-Stars remastering (And M2 will fix the brightening up that was done to the graphics on the GBA, as usual). And I'm sure that someone, somewhere, enjoyed the Yoshi egg challenge that was added as an enhancement (I didn't bother).

And of course, it also has ' Mario Bros. Advance', the GBA multiplayer component of this line that was based on the original arcade game. Limited to one player on the Wii U though, of course.

WHy not just get the Wii version of SMBA on disc? The Wii U can play Wii games after all.

I bought the Wii version of Super Mario All-Stars at release, still own my Player's Choice rerelease of Super Mario All-Stars for the SuperNes, and bought the Super Mario Advance ports of SMB2 and SMB3 when they also saw Player's Choice budget reprintings.

So I wasn't talking so much about myself (Although I'm tempted for off-screen play on the Wii U gamepad's large screen), but for Nintendo themselves. Nintendo has two fine remasterings here, but via their original 16 bit form, they're essentially un-releasable as a download. Thanks to the GBA conversions though, the two highlights of that collection can easily be released on the VC.and won't devalue their ever popular NES downloads of the originals.

Oh, and if the E-Reader content is somehow bundled in with Super Mario Advance 4 (SMB3), I'm definitely in.

Because its quite expensive now.

I'd be happy if SNES Super Mario All Stars was only available to those who have downloaded the four NES games already.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

It is? Should've bought more of them when I had a chance, it was for like 10 or 20 euro.

I hope the GBA DKC games are eventually on the docket.

I love Mario 2, but I always wondered why they chose that game to remake/port, whatever ya wanna call it, as Super Mario Advance. It dawned on me it's probably because SMB1 was ported to the GBC a few years prior. Anyways, it would have been nice to see an original Mario game for the GBA but the Advance games were pretty sweet. They did a good job introducing the games to a newer audience and I've been playing this game recently and holy poooooooooooooop are those boss voice clips great.

Downloading it this weekend. I loved it when I was younger, but my GBA broke, so it now collects dust. Can't wait to play it again.

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

Hopefully Super Mario Advance 4 will come out soon on the VC.

You've correctly surmised, no doubt, why they didn't start with SMB1 (Or the Lost Levels, which the GBC release also included a version of). But among the four that they did eventually release, this one also makes sense due to being the simplest of the four. No doubt it was a good way for the team to gets its feet wet and learn their way around the GBA.

It also ensured it sold the best that it could, instead of being tasked with following the even more beloved Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, or the more technically advanced Yoshi's Island. I have little doubt that if this one had been slotted for later on, fewer copies of the Super Mario Advance line would've been sold since this one would've gotten lost in the shadows to a certain degree.

Releasing at launch, it definitely wasn't overlooked.

Super Mario Advance 2 would be pointless given that its just a port of Super Mario World with no real changes.

Hopefully Super Mario Advance 4 will come out soon on the VC.

And the e-reader stages, even if they have to be paid DLC.

Sadly, one possible killer of the E-Reader content beyond laziness, is the fact that there isn't enough slots to even hold every add-on level.

I really hope that M2 does it, though. And maybe even delves into its source code to modify how much memory is available in order to release a fully loaded download.

But I believe that F-Zero: GP Legend is in a similar position, but doesn't seem to have included this content for its Japanese Wii U release judging by the lack of any sort of mention of it. So I'm not very optimistic.

The ESRB has just rated Mario Advance 2 for Wii U Virtual Console release here in North America so that'll probably be coming in January.

The big difference though is that e-reader support is only in the Japanese version of F-Zero GP Legend so the only choices would be to not include e-reader support or release the Japanese version in Europe and North America in terms of being fair between regions. For Super Mario Advance 4, Europe will get the North American version anyway so all countries could have the e-reader support.
