This game looks great on my HDTV, although it looks so good that I notice Mario switching to his less detailed model when he's farther away from the screen a lot easier.

Miiverse, Off-TV Play, and an electronic manual makes that $2 upgrade pretty sweet.

I didn't even know that EU Eshop got the US version until today! I just assumed it was the PAL version, which is the one I've always been familiar with. That makes it an instant buy!

The game looks fantastic on an HD-TV!! This has given me sufficient enough reason to revisit this classic once again. Wahoo~!!!

Simply one of the best games ever made.

My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

They can still make it better for a remake though. Super Mario 64 DS only went half way.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

I agree (and Super Mario 64 DS will likely also be on the Wii U VC). But if nothing else, Super Mario 64 will probably eventually be on the VC of one of Nintendo's future handhelds (perhaps NX). Then we will have a way for Super Mario 64 to be portable without having to resort to the DS version. Off-TV Play is a step in the right direction.

I want this. SM64DS was horrible and I never bought this on the Wii, so maybe it's actually time I replay my first Mario game for real. Off-TV is so appealing.

Ugh I was hoping you wouldn't say the truth.

Never had the chance to fully play Super Mario 64 DS why you guys complain about it?

Because in some ways (lack of analog stick, lowered difficulty, level design alterations, less vibrant colors) it is inferior to the original. Of course, it has its own enhancements in other ways, but people like to complain.

Other than the issue of control, it also cuts back on the graphics at times, despite some acting like it's nothing but an improvement. That wonderful layer of mist just above the water on Jolly Roger Bay for a star or two, for instance, doesn't make an appearance on the DS conversion. Lots of neat little touches like that have been stripped out, along with sacrifices elsewhere like the coins which are much less rounded for another clear cut example of where a downgrade had to be made in porting the title.

And the DS enhancements were rather lukewarm. The addition of three playable characters introduced more annoyance than anything when you'd have to backtrack to switch, just because something like a block can't be broken by the character you're playing as. The different physics and skills don't bring much to the table, unlike something like the four playable characters in Super Mario Bros. 2 that genuinely changes up how you play the game when switching to someone else.

And then there's the additional levels. Most of these are very small, trivial areas that amount to hardly anything (Like chasing the silver stars upstairs in that small island that's reminiscent of Super Mario Sunshine for a secret star.). The closest they ever come to actually presenting something approaching that of a new world within the game are the three areas where you unlock Mario, Luigi, and Wario. And even then, it's on a much smaller scale.

And the remixed stars are few and far between and usually are barely changed in actuality (And when they are, it's still nothing exciting). And the addition of a star I think to each world, is also pretty much always lazy as a rule and nothing but filler to pad the star total to get it to 150, such as hitting a switch block and having to scurry a few feet to somewhere else to get the star before the timer runs out.

Oh, and then, there's a lot of rabbits to chase to unlock minigames. Just more busywork than a genuinely fun addition to the base game.

While I love Super Mario 64 DS, I'll be avoiding it on the Wii U with the superior game available, that looks beautiful unlike what a native resolution Super Mario 64 DS promises to look on a tv (Although it didn't have to be that way, SM64DS rendered in HD has a charming look to it that could've translated well to larger screens, as seen below in an area where major color alterations were made for some reason).

The best addition to Super Mario 64 DS was actually the optional minigames. That's not even (entirely) an insult towards the game, because those minigames are some of the best minigames.

Question: if I transfer my Wii VC version of this to the Wii U, does my save data get lost in the transition? I REALLY don't want to have to do the penguin race again.

Currently Playing: Advance Wars 1 + 2: Re- Boot Camp (NS)

Save data is lost in every transition. But you can now use save states.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I WAS thinking of avoiding the N64 version, because the DS version really does have some advantages, but the N64 version seems to fit better, because the DS games look more pixelated by default. I'm not really sure. The DS version isn't even there right now, but meh. I'm for sure getting DK64, though.

Are they really going to bother releasing the ds version as well? Doesn't seem to make any sense at all. Not so sure why people are assuming this.

Well, it still has stuff the N64 version doesn't have that some people might care about. Playing as Wario, Luigi, and Yoshi mixed stuff up a bit. I'm not assuming the DS version will happen, but if it does, there are obvious reasons to buy one over the other, or buy both if that's what you really want.

The N64 version looks better on the TV, but the DS has extras and would cost the same. There really is a trade off, IMO.

They released Super Mario World for the GBA. That has its own share of trade-offs like inferior music, with even less additions than SM64DS has.

So I wouldn't rule it out, nor the remaining examples of such releases on the GBA (Link to the Past and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy leap to mind as being in a similar situation).

Always nice to have options, even if most will stick with the console version. I may even buy DKC3 to experience its new, and apparently equally as good, soundtrack if it ever arrives on the Wii U Virtual Console in the months ahead.

Can I get some tips on how to control Mario? He won't jump, walk or wall jump as I tell him. He's super slippery, and don't even get me started on the ice level(s). He always wants to slide even on horizontal surfaces. This is a subtle way of saying that the controls suck, but I'd seriously love some tips.

I noticed something: If you stand and look, let's say right, and then spam Up > Down > Up > Down repeating, then he will walk RIGHT.
