What are you guys talking about, "difficulty spikes?" A Link to the Past is pretty easy and I could beat it as a kid in *92. Despite it being easy, it's my second favorite game of all time.

I agree with the difficulty spikes. It's not so much as its hard as much as after certain points you're never given any space or downtime. Its not like Ocarina of Time where you can always go back to the past where things are relatively safe - after a while, even the Light World areas become overrun with some pretty tough soldiers who will chase you into buildings. Also, the first dungeon in the Dark World is...one of the hardest in the entire series, let alone the game.

It's the only major flaw with the game, though. I can say a lot worse about other Zelda games.

Really? If i had one complaint about this game it might be that it's too easy. You always have enough health. Also Dark Palace isn't even hard...

Don't get A Link to the Past.

On the contrary Ryno and Kevlar 44 are quite wrong when it comes to A Link to the Past being easy. I would never call it easy or even moderately easy. It is definitely harder in comparison to Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Oracle of ages, and Oracle of Seasons (my personal experience). But, what would you expect, this is one of the earlier Zelda's making it much harder of a game and much more frustrating. I mean, let's look at some basic reasons why A Link to the Past is hard:
Enemies in the light world take twice as much or more health away (in comparison to OoT, OoA, OoS, MM)
Enemies in the dark world take even MORE health from Link
Inconsistencies between enemies you recoil from and enemies that you don't recoil from make it difficult to deal with them
Some enemies have you recoil half a screen and other don't
Link's sword is not very effective at certain angles
Link's sword does not strike very far
It is difficult to switch Links direction when slashing the sword
It is hard to progress because health damage will lead to death quite often (even if you have multiple fairies in bottles)
Link is slow thus making it harder to avoid enemies
Many of Link's items are slow at repetition
Three words...death death and death (A LOT in this game)
There are many more reasons why this game is difficult

This is not an exhaustive list of how hard A Link to the Past really is and now you know that it shouldn't be played unless you have the patience to get through it and shouldn't be played unless you want to say that you've at least done it once in life.

I've heard that the original Zelda and Zelda II are harder than A Link to the Past. That's scary because ALttP is already a teeth gnashing hair pulling frustrating game. I couldn't even imagine how hard Zelda and Zelda II would be.

Honestly, The first quest of the original Zelda isn't too bad. It's no cakewalk, but I found it easier than A Link to the Past. While you can get more hearts in ALttP just from cutting grass, cutting grass is dangerous enough since it tends to spawn more enemies, and until you get the upgraded boomerang, that often means spawning bombs and enemies right in front of your face. In the origfinal Zelda...most enemies don't pay attention to you, they wander randomly, so if you're careful, you can take out enemies fairly easily and collect any hearts/fairies they drop. Also, most enemies deal the same amount of low damage, since there's only one optional armor upgrade. Combine that with a lot of dungeons having bombable shortcuts and you have a pretty straight-forward and easy time for a good portion of the game. (Darknuts still suck, though)

The only annoying enemies in the original Zelda are the Darknuts (which totally have some sort of of AI that reads your movements, and no one can convince me of the contrary) and the Wizzrobes, which do quite a lot of damage and are always in groups (and the ones that move are the worst).

I didn't play it until after I beat A Link Between Worlds, and I still found it to be a fantastic game. It's definitely aged well, like most Super Nintendo classics.

Yeah the first quest in the original Zelda is not impossibly hard given a) that you take notes/draw your own map and b) you have the original manual with the inlay. But while its true most enemies don't pay attention to you, very often you find yourself in an intricate web of projectiles which is hard not to take damage from. In the overworld, Zolas and Leevers (they seem to spawn always right in your face) can be fatal in the early stages, and in the dungeons blue Wizzrobes are just nasty, reason why most people leave the sixth dungeon for last. You can upgrade your shield, but the moment you're caught by a Like Like, it's gone!
But the game, beside deliberately maze-like navigation and combat, is very very fair - it's never too cryptic and you never need anything that is not included within the game or in the manual/foldout. It's a lot more fair than the following entries in the serie, where you are required to remember a rock that you passed 25 hours before or dive down into a minuscule square of sea to find a NPC to complete a side quest that turns out being a requirement to advance in one of the main levels.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

Personally, I think LttP has held up the best out of all the Zelda titles. I felt Ocarina of Time aged terribly until the 3DS remake.

Of course, I'm biased before LttP is probably one of my favourite games of all time.

You should get all Nintendo LoZs.

Playing through this again for the first time in years. It's still as fantastic as I remember. And about a million times easier than the original LoZ, which I beat for the first time recently. That game gives you no clue where you need to go to progress, and every time you enter a new screen on the world map, enemies are relentlessly trying to murder you.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

I finally started playing this after giving up on the original Zelda, which I found too cryptic in terms of where I needed to go. I'm not drawing my own map or playing with a walk through (I bagged Metroid for the same reason). This is very accessible and looks great. I've referred to a walk through once, but really didn't need to and I think it's probably the best Zelda game to start with unless you think everything needs to be 3D.

Considering the thread is almost a year old, I'd assume the OP already decided if he wants alttp.

If you want to discuss the game further, I don't know if we have a general alttp thread. If we do, its probably really old, you can create one if you want.

To talk about cats, please use the chit chat thread.
