Topic: Should I get Earthbound?

I think Earthbound is an essential game to play, if only to understand why it's so beloved. Even now, it's a very unique RPG; very surreal and certainly has it's own character.

I can't remember if I've even finished or not. One day I'll get around to it, just to make sure...

^ Nailed it. Even if you don't play it as your first RPG, you should at least play it one day. Now, as a starting point? Others have made good arguments. It does get grindy at points, which means you'll want to fight monsters repetitively in order to level up. If that sounds like a pain, don't start with Earthbound and come back to it after getting into a more beginner-friendly RPG like Mario & Luigi. If a little repetition here and there doesn't bother you, jump right in.

This game is fun, but I am having a hard time finishing it because of the pace. I don't think it aged too well, and it feels like a bit of a chore. Having said that... the game pays off every once in a while and it makes the pain feel worthy.

I would say yes. It's not excessively long or punishing even with its clunky battle system. The humour, characters and story have aged better than the gameplay and graphics.

Still think Chrono trigger is a better place to start.
