I have heard many good things about it and I really want to try it out, I have never played an RPG fully so this would be one of the first ones I would attempt to complete, I know most of the basic RPG skills and gameplay I just need to know if this would be a good first RPG for me!

the mother/earthbound series is the only rpg games i really play, so that says something. in fact im not the only one who is like that. so with that being said you may like it too.

Yes, I highly recommend it. It's a great starting point for the genre, and a fantastic game overall. I'm currently playing through it, and I've loved every minute of it.

You never beat an RPG before?
I don't think you should start with Earthbound. It can be a very intimidating start. I died again and again near the beginning of the game and honestly, there are easier, less hardcore RPGs out there like Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga that are also very fun.

^ @Kyloctopus is right. It may be great game, but many parts would get tiring for someone who's never completed an RPG. While it's a good game, it's a bad place to start.
Earthbound is my first RPG and I've really enjoyed it. In fact, after I am done I plan to tackle Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana since I've enjoyed it so much. One day I'll also start Xenoblade Chronicles, which has been sitting on my shelf unplayed for years. I suggest printing out the Earthbound guide from the internet so that it is easily accessible. The music is great and the dialogue is amusing and the enemies are quite comical. Plus with save states it makes it easier to explore without worrying about dying.
Currently playing (perpetually): NHL 95, Mega Man 2 and Super Metroid
the official earthbound guide may not be enough help...if you want to see absolutely everything there is the game has to offer youll want to bookmark this link: http://starmen.net/mother2/walkthroughs/

I'd actually say that chrono trigger is a better first classic RPG. Everything is pretty straightforward, it has no random encounters, and not really any grinding.
And the music.....
Even though it is a fantastic game I would never recommend it to someone as their first RPG but more something like Chrono Trigger or a Mario & Luigi to begin. The game IS hard and the old Dragon Quest ergonomy takes a while to get used to.
Tough to say, like people had said...the enemies/bosses in Earthbound can be quite nightmarish. Especially in the beginning of the game, I've played through this game plenty of times, even about to beat it again right now. xD (uploaded a small clip on Youtube) Despite this some bosses out there STILL manage to take me down, so yeah...you got to put a lot of strategy into it.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
Yes. It is entirely its own thing in gaming, the only game like Earthbound before Earthbound was the prequel to Earthbound. And the only games like Earthbound after Earthbound were Mother 3 or games that were inspired by Earthbound.
