Spoiler alert, obviously.
Lots of people have criticized EarthBound's infamous "abortion theory" by saying director Shigesato Itoi and English translator Marcus Lindblom have publicly refuted it. But while I've read Lindblom's denial, I have yet to find any interview where Itoi directly tackles the abortion theory. The closest thing I can find is the interview where he talks about the final battle being inspired by a traumatic scene in a movie he watched as a kid. He never actually says anything about the abortion theory, though. In the two decades since EarthBound's release, someone has to have asked Itoi directly about the abortion theory, right? Are my Google-Fu skills just not good enough? If anyone can point me in the direction of a direct Itoi denial of the EarthBound abortion theory, I'd be eternally grateful.
More than likely there isn't an interview where it was brought up since this theory did not originate in Japan. At least he answered the question about where he got his inspiration from.
Wait I thought this was confirmed to be the case not a theory? Lol
It has never been confirmed. I'm going to find the source, but I do recall reading somewhere that Itoi laughed at the theory, and it wasn't a "You got it!" laugh, it was a "How ridiculous!" laugh.

Hope you find it, I spent so much time in those archives without a result
But yeah, that is just a fan made theory. If you read the links, they are quite informative.

I wish I could, but to be honest, it could've been a speculative statement.

That's not what the OP is asking. Have you never heard of the abortion theory?

Or, it could be symbolism for how Giygas has transitioned to a weaker state, because just before that happens, you pray and make his defense erractic...
