I have seen too many people complain that $5 is too much for and old VC game.
Really? Do you really think $5 for a game that is no longer made in the original cartridge form it came in for a system that is no longer made is too expensive?
I have seen over $900 for original, still new in box NES games. Used games at $5- $70. Therefore $5 for a VC game developed to be played on your WiiU in HD is not a bad price. New video games cost $40-$50, so why complain about $5-$8 prices?
There are people who also complain that they should get a VC game for free on WiiU because they already bought it on the Wii or DS. Why are people so cheap?? Each game, whether a physical cartridge, disk or downloaded, is a separate product for each separate Nintendo system. Just because they are all Nintendo games and systems does not mean that you buy a game and get a free copy of that same game for another Nintendo system. A downloaded game is a product just like a physical game disk. It is something that costs to develop and requires to be sold at a specific price so that a company makes a profit.
If you want VC Super Mario Bros for Wii, then you buy it for Wii. If you want Super Mario Bros for Wii U then you pay for it again for Wii U.
When did anyone ever go to a store, buy a game, and expect to get the same game for another system for free or discounted price?? Never, so why do people expect to get free or discounted games on the Nintendo eShop?
If Nintendo happens to let you transfer a game, get another game for free or at a discounted price, then consider yourself lucky that they are generous to their customers. But do not feel obligated that they have to.
I will hold back from expressing my opinions of society in general and focus a little more. Cheap or free mobile gaming are some reasons reason why $5-$10 seems high for some especially for a 20 year old game.
If they can price high and get away with it, than good for them I guess. For comparison, a typical PS1 game on PSN is $5.99. PS2 is $9.99.. with some exceptions. Just as comparison... what do you think?
^I think saying a PSOne game is worth more than a solid Genesis or SNES game is pure bullcrap. Sure the PSOne games typically cost $6, but they also haven't aged very gracefully, and the few that did age well cost a full $10 - same as the N64 on VC.
Anyways, the prices for the VC are mostly fair, and Nintendo probably can't afford to go much lower. The only bullcrap I've seen are imports costing $1 extra despite having no extra work put into the game. But it's only $1 more, so I can't complain too much.
Many own the original consoles/games so some might find it hard to justify Nintendo's prices for some of these games that are so old. The fact that they're starting over with VC doesn't help either.
Its not a matter of being cheap. Its a matter of some thinking the product and service that Nintendo is offering doesn't justify the price. I know it might be a hard concept to grasp, but people might feel differently than you about the situation.
I personally won't be investing hundreds of dollars into VC like I did last gen due to games being tied to my system again and a lack of an account system. I know for a fact that I'll be purchasing Earthbound, but nothing else is a guarantee.

Obviously they're not the VC's demographic and shouldn't even be caring in the first place if they can't justify buying an old game at these insanely low prices and incredible convenience.

You know what is an actual hard concept to grasp? People complaining about spending $5-10 for hours of entertainment.

A lot of people had Wiis and probably were aware of the service which justifies them caring to a certain extent.
But like @Midnight3DS said, these prices aren't going to change as long as Nintendo's core consumers keep buying them. People complaining about it or complaining about the complainers just makes this a weird part of the internet.

I don't think the VC prices are all that bad anymore. I could see how some would complain about the upgrade price, but now they're giving deals, and there's 10% back for deluxe owners.
$1.50 isn't a big deal though. I just bought Kirby All Star, and upgraded Dream Land 3 to get the Course game for free. Also, I didn't even have Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 2 on Wii VC, so I got both for $10.50.
For someone owning a Nintendo console for the first time, this is a great time to get VC games. They probably wouldn't be able to even make these deals if no one had bought VC games, prior. Just a note.
BTW, you can upgrade 2 of the Kirby games for $3, and get the 3rd one free. So you just got Kirby(subtitle here) for $3.
Even so, that still equals out to $4.50 to upgrade if you had all the Kirby games, and you still get 10% back.
You're paying for future benefits and deals, and you technically have 2 copies of the game, because it doesn't erase the Wii version.
Maybe they'll let you import that extra copy to 3DS, but that's just possibility, and alot of speculation...
Would anyone pay $1.50 to cross play a game? It pays for the servers to be kept up, too.

1. I don't have an issue with the pricing. For that money, you could buy a cup of coffee or a couple of burgers, which will last you a few minutes, or you can get a VC game, which in the very least will last you a couple hours.
2. While Nintendo has every right to charge you to buy the game on multiple consoles, consumers aren't out of line to protest the practice, as Nintendo's competitors (Sony & Apple, in particular), do allow you to carry a single purchase across multiple platforms.

Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

I think that has more to do with $5-$10 for an old console game vs, say, some music off itunes or something.
I don't really have a problem with the prices since while kinda hit or miss as far as being cheaper than a physical copy, they're more fair than Sony's prices where many PS1 games cost the same as a PS2 game. That being said I usually only buy digital games if the price is a lot lower than the price a physical copy in good shape would be, but I would be much more likely to buy the digital version for the convenience of having it on both my console and handheld, if not across all their current platforms. I'm sure I'm not alone here and that going cross-buy would pay off in the long run since they'd be attracting customers that would have taken their money elsewhere. It also comes off as just plain stubberness and money-grubbing when their competitors do it and they don't.
I also think they need to get rid of the tiered pricing with the Wii U. Why is a coin-op style game like Balloon Fight worth the same as SMB3? On the bright side they've done it with the 3DS e-shop so they will probably do so with the Wii U as well.
You can buy CDs for like $1-10 off of eBay or whatever, but video games are different.
Earthbound goes for $70+ for the used cart only. Nintendo will be releasing it for $8 on the eShop. Second hand sellers can't compete with gamers that just want to play the game, cartridge form or not.
The games are better on the Wii U, anyway. HD support, 2.0 PCM from a digital format, off-screen, and multiple controllers are compatible. With eShop deals and 10% back, Nintendo's doing good with the VC.
