My guess is that they want to change the name. Virtual Console makes it sound like it is a different system and doesn't give the impression that it is only for older games.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Quick, someone else register the term so Nintendo can't get it back!

Or maybe they won't explicitly call it anything. You can already just scroll down on the home menu and click to see games in the NES/SNES/GBA categories.
I agree with this. Those categories should just be buttons on the eShop you can browse through. From within each section just have a good filter option and you're set.
The next online shop Nintendo makes should drop all the vague categories like "Our picks" and all that. I get that they're trying to make sure all games get the spotlight in some form at some point, but it makes the eShop look like an unorganized mess.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
We'll see thursday when they do the eEhop update. We'll soon know what they'll change the name too, if anything.
Besides, they're not abandoning the virtual console completely, NoE wouldn't have released a press statement with VC games on it.
I hope they don't abandon the VC, this weeks EU update I hope is the start of a revival. That's the positive speaking.
The negative is they have probably cancelled the name because they are not intending to release any other systems
But the Virtual Console name still exists in the Wii Shop Channel so that would suggest either the eshop and Wii Shop Channel are being merged (great idea) or the Wii Shop Channel is being discontinued (RIP N64/SEGA games).

The Virtual Console name still exists in the eShop, so this probably means absolutely nothing. They'll most likely reregister the trademark.

You guys do know that the goods for which this particular trademark was registered were PAPER PRODUCTS, right? Seeing as Nintendo hasn't really used the trademark on any activity books, paintings, stationery, etc., I'm not surprised they decided to ditch this particular virtual console trademark.
