Nintendo 64 mini Classic, assuming it will have 30 selected games on it, just like the NES mini Classic:

01. Wii U / Wii - Super Mario 64
02. Wii U / Wii - Mario Kart 64
03. Wii U / Wii - Paper Mario
04. Wii U / Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
05. Wii U / Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
06. Wii U / Wii - Star Fox 64
07. Wii U / Wii - Wave Race 64
08. Wii U / Wii - Yoshi's Story
09. Wii U / Wii - F-Zero X
10. Wii U / Wii - 1080° Snowboarding
11. Wii U / Wii - Kirby 64 - The Crystal Shards
12. Wii U / Wii - Pokemon Snap
13. Wii U / Wii - Mario Party 2
14. Wii U / Wii - Mario Golf
15. Wii U / Wii - Mario Tennis
16. Wii U / Wii - Sin And Punishment
17. Wii U - Donkey Kong 64
18. Wii U - Excitebike 64
19. Wii - Super Smash Bros.
20. Wii - Pokémon Puzzle League
21. Wii - Cruis'n USA
22. Wii - Bomberman Hero (Nintendo / HUDSON SOFT)
23. Wii - Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (SQUARE ENIX)

That's the twenty-three Nintendo 64 games Nintendo has re-released on Wii Virtual Console, and Wii U Virtual Console.

N64 Games that Nintendo could add with ease:

24. Mario Party 3
25. Pilotwings 64
26. Cruis'n World
27. Ridge Racer 64

Additional games that defined the console back in the day:

28. GoldenEye
29. Killer Instinct Gold

Fill up the final spot with a N64 classic that stood the test of time yourself!

There are too many good ones for me to pick. Practically every Rare game made for the console (Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Blast Corps, Diddy Kong Racing, etc.), and Tetrisphere, Mischief Makers, The New Tetris, Bomberman 64, Resident Evil 2, Doom 64, Wetrix, Body Harvest, Space Station Silicon Valley, StarCraft 64, Command & Conquer, Harvest Moon 64, just to name a few.

We've never even had 30 N64 classics available on the Virtual Console, so I doubt it. If/when it happens, I'd expect 8-12 titles. And be patient since Nintendo's focus is going to be on the first Christmas for the Switch a year from now.

Thus I would not be surprised if this concept is put away for a time, with the knowledge that it's a success and can be awakened again during that transitional lull that always seems to occur when Nintendo's last gen platform is in its twilight but they've yet to launch its successor. As this new system has amply demonstrated, this an excellent way to stir excitement for your brand and to prop up your finances during a slow business period, so I think they'll file this away for a few years for the next time.

I'd bet on a SuperNES Classic Edition and hopefully eventually a N64 themed successor, but it also wouldn't surprise me if I have a 5 year wait ahead of me before it happens, with the existing NES Classic Edition merely restocked come Fall 2017 (Perhaps with a slightly refreshed or expanded game lineup or even a top loading theme, in order to attract some double dipping).

An N64 Mini would be a tricky one I guess because these things sell so much on nostalgia, and such a huge part of N64 nostalgia (well in this country certainly) is Goldeneye. And because of the rights issues I doubt they'd be able to get that on there. They'd have to put a sticker on it like 'Warning: This does not include Goldeneye'.

Nintendo in my opinion would have a much easier chance securing licenses for a few Rare classics on a plug and play, than they would for the Virtual Console. Unlike the Switch, these plug and play systems aren't really in competition with Microsoft, so I'm not sure I'd dismiss the possibility of a game or two escaping for a potential N64 Classic Edition.

That said, I'd say that this year's SNES Classic proved I was right about the game count. 30 NES games and 21 SNES games suggests perhaps 15 N64 games at the top end for a possible N64 Classic Edition. So the suggestion of such a device having 30 N64 games is even easier to dismiss these days.

But I'd personally bet on a Game Boy Classic next year before a N64 themed release.

Hi everyone,

A few reasons why, some of the N64's classics won't make it on, the "Classic Edition" is that it has a lot to do with licensing and copyright policies. Also, the only game developed by Rareware, that Nintendo actually owns the licenses to are the Donkey Kong games...that's pretty much it! That being said, this could be a huge deal breaker for many fans of, the Nintendo 64 and its small but fun library of games. As most N64 enthusiasts already know, a large proportion of the N64's classic titles were, indeed developed by Rareware during its lifespan in the mid to late 90s. Now to just name a few, there won't be any Rareware titles such as Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Blast Corps, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, GoldenEye 007, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct Gold, and Perfect Dark on the N64 Classic Edition.

Sadly, the first original Mario Party won't make the cut either, Mario Party 2 will be the only game added from the Mario Party series...smh! Now don't get me wrong, Mario Party 2 is great game and all but, wouldn't you much rather have the first original Mario Party game that started it all...I know I would! Anyhow, lets forget about Rareware for a minute and, lets talk about some of the other great, N64 classics & hidden gems that were released on the console as well. Let's not forget about games like Body Harvest, Castlevania 64, Doom64, Harvest Moon 64, Mischief Makers, Pilot Wings, Resident Evil: 2, Space Station: Silicon Valley, StarCraft 64, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Quake 1&2, WinBack and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head...lol!

Other than that, I do think it's cool that, Nintendo is considering on releasing a Classic Edition of the N64. But all jokes aside, I'm actually happy and just fine playing games on, my original N64 that I've had for about 20 years now. To be perfectly honest, I've had the same N64 since, the Christmas of 1997 and I'm 31 years old as of now. Yes, it's true, I still have my very first and original N64 that, I had received as a gift when I was about 11 or 12 years old. To make a long story short, everything still works the same as the first day I had gotten it. Although, if I did somehow pick one up, it'll just sit in the box on my shelf as a collectable...nothing more! All it would be is, one of those things just to say I have one. Lastly, I've always been a huge fan of, the Nintendo 64 but due to the Classic Edition's lineup/list of possible games, I'm slightly more excited to pick up an SNES Classic Edition instead...just my opinion.

Now in regards to myself, the only game I'm sorta excited about on, the N64 Classic Edition is "Sins and Punishment" as it was never released here in the United States before. Regardless of everything I just said, who on here is excited about, the N64 Classic Edition if Nintendo decides to manufacture them for, consumers and fans around the world...? Much as I'm a fan of the N64 and, much as I'm happy to hear awesome Nintendo related news, I'm also kinda disappointed in a way at the same time...here's why!? Now I'm not mad or, am I hating on Nintendo but, I just feel that they could of added more games for the N64 Classic Edition's library. Who here feels sorta the same way as I do...?

To those who, actually took the time to read my post, thank you!...

Kind regards,

Nintendo 64 mini Classic, assuming it will have 30 selected games on it

I would expect ten games, maybe twelve if we're lucky. After all, the SNES Mini only had 21. The larger the game,s the less games on the system it seems.

Something like this is more likely.

01. Wii U / Wii - Super Mario 64
02. Wii U / Wii - Mario Kart 64
03. Wii U / Wii - Paper Mario
04. Wii U / Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
05. Wii U / Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
06. Wii U / Wii - Star Fox 64
07. Wii U / Wii - Wave Race 64
08. Wii U / Wii - Yoshi's Story
09. Wii U / Wii - F-Zero X
10. Wii U / Wii - Mario Party 2
11. Wii U - Donkey Kong 64
12. Wii - Pokémon Puzzle League

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

Atariboy

It likely would be more than 10. Going off Virtual Console prices, both previous releases have hovered pretty close to the $150 value mark if all the included games were bought at Nintendo's Virtual Console rates.

NES Classic had 30 games, which at $5 a pop, puts it at $150. And the regular SNES Classic lineup had 20 games at $8 a game, which puts it at $160 ($168 if you include the unlockable 21st bonus game that Nintendo considers an extra in their marketing material).

$10 is the standard Virtual Console price point for N64 games. So I'd say that 10 is out of the question and 12 is at the low end of what's likely, if this actually happens. 15 is what I'd personally place a bet on. But I'm not so sure we can expect a N64 Classic Edition.

The emulation demands are higher and might outclass this hardware, and then there's the more complicated and expensive controllers. Going to need rumble motors, analog sticks, 4 controller ports on the system itself, and to include at least two controllers out of the box since the N64 was always such a multiplayer-centric console (I'd argue even more so than the SNES Classic, so I don't see them going backwards here). And I don't see them wanting to up the price much, if at all.

I'm thinking Game Boy Classic Edition for 2018...

Yeah, 15 sounds about right to me and the majority of them are surely going to have to come from what's already available on the Virtual Console for the Wii U.

One other thing to note with the N64 is that the games themselves are that much larger and there's a relatively limited amount of storage on the system that Nintendo have been using for emulating the classic consoles so far. As such, don't expect too many games from late in the machine's commercial lifetime, as that could substantially limit the numbers. The early games, like Mario 64, shouldn't be a problem though.

That's actually not a bad idea! I think it'd be quite fun if these Classic consoles also included a couple of stinkers! If an 'Atari 2600 Classic' had that notoriously awful E.T. game on it, I'd definitely give it a go and revel in its mediocrity for a while! The N64 Classic should definitely have Superman 64 on it! ..it may be trash - but it's remarkable, iconic trash!

Why not stick ClayFighter 63⅓ in there as well? ..for the lolz!

Funnily enough the Atari Flashback 8 doesn't come with E.T. - presumably there would be licensing issues - but with 120 games you can be sure that it's got more than its fair share of duffers. It's also missing a lot of the games you'd most associate with the console because Atari couldn't get the rights for them because of licence deals and needing to negotiate with other publishers who hold the rights.

Compared to that, I think Nintendo have struck a much better balance so far in terms of getting the games people expect to be there, while not including too many forgettable ones. As such, it'd be nice if they could come to some sort of deal with Microsoft to include some Rare games, otherwise an N64 Classic would have a lot of notable omissions.

Matt_Barber

Atariboy

E.T. wasn't awful.

It just gained fame from Atari putting so much marketing behind it and producing more copies than existed 2600's (Counting on it selling millions of new systems), that it became infamous since it was a mediocre game and didn't come close to meeting Atari's sales projections.

I can name dozens of far worse games on the platform. Heck, go give Karate by Ultravision a try. At least E.T. has a pretty decent 2600 rendition of the E.T. theme playing on the title screen...

Yeah, I'd have E.T. down as an overhyped game rather than a downright bad one myself. Still, either way, I don't think the Flashback 8 is any worse for its absence.

@SKTTR There was more to the N64 than Rare's games.

SKTTR

@Bass_X0 What do you mean by "more", when we take away the obvious first party titles we already mentioned and know will be on the N64 mini?

The SNES mini classic featured third party megaseller cult-classics like Rare's Donkey Kong Country, Capcom's Street Fighter, Ghouls'n Ghosts, and Mega Man, Konami's Castlevania and Contra, Square Enix's Final Fantasy and Secret of Mana.

In the same sense GoldenEye defined the N64. It inspired the genre as a whole. It is a N64 exclusive and was the third-best selling game of the entire console, very close to Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64, pushing Ocarina of Time into spot #4. It was a system seller that was featured in pop-art and music videos, and even 20 years later it does many things so well that even modern shooters should have another deep look at it. You've no serious respectable N64 collection when it's missing legacy titles like GoldenEye on it period.

Apart from that, the more 4-player games on the N64mini the better.

Need I tell you again that Rare games belong to Microsoft now, including Goldeneye? Just because you remember it existing on a Nintendo console has no bearing on today's market, even in the realm of hypothetical wish lists. Nintendo did want it on Virtual Console but were turned down.

Having goldeneye on it wouldn't be entirely up to rare nor microsoft though.

The 007 franchise doesn't belong to them.
