It was an odd/interesting game. It looks like a kid game, but had some pretty dark, strange, and 'mature' themes. Fighting animals, police, streetsigns, cars, aliens, trashcan monsters, gophers, cult members, ghosts, puppets, etc., along with 'unsettling' or wierd music with an abstract background fighting scene is probably why we haven't seen it in a long time. Mother for NES was originally supposed to have blood on the characters, and characters holding knives. Even Frank in Earthbound would hurt Ness with a knife. Adult game that looks like a kid game is why I think it never made it out of Japan. I think if they just rated it T for Tenn, they coukd get away with it...

Well In Japan the music is the same and there are WAY more legal issues in the japanese version, the runaway five in the japanese version are almost the same as the blues brothers.

Copyright law is not the same in Japan as it is in the United States. They sample all kinds of things more freely there in Japan.

Still, if that was the case the game would have been released mere months after the SSBB demo. But it never did until now, which means there was SOME problem.

Apparently you guys don't recall the Earthbound series is making a return pretty soon in U.S. Not saying it will be a Trilogy collection, or remake, but we're getting one soon...

Might it have something to do with the Anti-Piracy measures installed in the game preventing people from playing it on an emulator: http://starmen.net/mother2/gameinfo/antipiracy/

Yes, it was bypassed as far back as the 90s, IIRC, but I think we all know by now that Nintendo's VC department doesn't have the best coders...

Mmm... Could be. But Mother 2 had those, didn't it?

As I said, Japan has way more issues, with the JP translation containing more direct references than the US, and that's coming out somewhere.

OR They could just edit it.

Unlike recoloring art assets, replacing music can be a bit of a hassle. It'd be better if they just licensed the music, but that'd be too costly for a VC game, even one by Nintendo...

It's easier for Japan to get away with this. They're more lenient.

Importing an old game and attempting to learn a language that will serve little use in the lives of many people is hardly productive.
