Isn't the whole point of a save state the fact that you're able to reload it? A suspend point is no different from leaving the Nintendo on while you went to school. Which unquestionably we did all the time.

Every time that I tried to do that I would get home from school find my NES turned off and then get a lecture from my Dad on how that was wasting electricity and I dont pay the bill.

Literally none of them.

What so you always play from the beginning every game that originally had no save functionality at all ? Or mess around with passwords ?

Suspend points are not save states.

EDIT: Also...have we really reached the point that playing games as they were originally designed is considered an absurd prospect? I hope not.

I think we've all played the games we enjoy as they originally were designed. Save states add something new to the games and allow players to be able to see more of the harder games.

...and I think you might have missed the fact that I was responding to somebody who implied that playing them as they were originally designed was an absurd prospect.

Punchout!! I used them so I could simply start fighting the same boxer without dropping to a previous fight. I did abuse them a bit against Mr. Dream, but that was after being pummeled multiple times.

Definitely Earthbound. I would not play Earthbound without save states.

I don't recall EarthBound being very difficult except for a few parts.
Trillionage Sprout (and then most of the difficulty was from not getting Mashroomed), the Fourside Department Store and the final dungeon.
Though in the case of the Sprout, you could just skip it and come back later.

EarthBound never crashed on SNES, never crashed in forced Hz mode (playing on a PAL system), and never crashed on Wii U VC.
Never!

If EarthBound VC crashes on you, then every Wii U game will crash sooner or later. It's not the games fault, and you should check your Wii U hardware as it's most likely damaged or not updated.

My Wii U hasn't crashed for months, except for Coaster Crazy Deluxe but that is a known bug, so the games fault.

People should differentiate between a freezing bug inside a game, and a glitchy Wii U hardware.

Okay the game doesn't crash, but it would prevent me quitting back to the Wii U menu, making a new save state or actually recording any in-game save after playing it for somewhere between 60-90 minutes in one go. No issues with any other game doing this!

I have no shame in using save states to save scum. I save scummed my way through the last level of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. I'm currently playing Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island and I've been using save states before boss fights when I have a perfect run (i.e. 30 stars, 20 red coins, all 5 flowers). To lose stars on a boss after doing all that... no.

I don't have the time to play these games straight up nowadays. A lot of VC games have really dated mechanics as well, that would make it super frustrating to play them straight up. I'm sorry, I'm not putting in passwords! Also, back in the NES days, games not only required twitch reflexes but also massive amounts memorization. You had to play these games hundreds of times to memorize enemy placement, item placement, etc. I don't have that kind of time these days. Save states make it possible for me to enjoy a lot of these games that I wouldn't otherwise play.

I don't know how you could even play this with save states... when you lose you come back stronger with more experience... if you lose with a save state you'll just go back to having the same level and will just lose again? over and over and over and over... like a vicious cycle... definitely wouldn't use save states for Earthbound or any RPG haha

Falchion

Metroid; i am so bad at that game, it helps to start with full health when u die and not have to backtrack as much.

If you're talking the original metroid, I found the biggest help was simply using a map from the internet.

Though filling your health and finding save points isn't really an issue in Super Metroid. Things work in that game.

Well if you made a mistake which caused your loss you can try again. I found it worked pretty well. Just set the save point before the battle starts - sometimes there's a marathon slog before getting back to where you were defeated and that got pretty old fast using the game's own checkpoints.

Most long SNES and NES games without saves. I never have a solid 3 hours to play a single game and loads of my childhood games took a couple of hours to complete. Now it means I can save a perfect start and come back to it. The original Jurassic Park SNES was impossible for me because it took hours. I would like to see that on VC so I could finally finish it!

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

The Castlevania games definitely. I've never been very good at them anyway, but the early games had some really cheap deaths. Save States are a life saver for me.
