It's nothing too exciting. It's just a title edit and a palette swap for Mario, of the original Famicom port from 1983 or so. So you're not missing much, particularly if you already have the Virtual Console download of Mario Bros.
Now if it had been the arcade original or the excellent 1993 NES conversion that Europe got (Which puts to shame Nintendo's earlier effort from a decade earlier) that they had modified, it would be different.
Nope, that's essentially a remake. It's also in Superstar Saga, as I recall.
And strike needing NSLU to play it. Just fully finishing Super Mario 3D World apparently unlocks it, you only need a NSLU save present if you want immediate access to it from the start.
