This game isn't quite as difficult as I remember. Guess all that old-school Dragon Quest helped.

Anyways, I saved the Zoo, found the monkey, and returned the canary Chick, giving me two more tunes to memorize. Unfortunately, I don't know where to go next...

That's too good to be true! Though I won't deny that Mother 1 being localized increases Mother 3's chances a little.

This game already had a localization completed back around 1990-91. It was supposed to be released in the US in 1991, but was scrapped because it looked dated and probably wouldn't sell (that is the theory at least). So, this was easy for Nintendo and with the cult following of earthbound (of which this was called also) they can probably make some easy money off of it. Localizing Mother 3 is an entirely different story as that was never undertaken.

I know all about that...plus the cartridges would've cost more to make than usual. Anyways, the fact that Mother 3 wasn't done before pretty much adds to why I don't think it'll be shown. Mother 1 was at least finished. Mother 3? No. Plus there's a lot of things they'd probably have to change (Magypsies, the swearing, etc.). But the reason I think Mother 1 finally showing up at least raises Mother 3's chances of happening PERIOD is because if Nintendo was willing to FINALLY use this translation, it's probably because they noticed how much people liked Earthbound on Virtual Console. If this one is successful on Virtual Console, they'll probably consider translating Mother 3 (or Earthbound 2, as they'll probably call it.)

Well, I guess I'm gonna wait until they have it on sale or it comes for the 3DS. Whatever comes first.

I assume it's a longish game, and I don't really use my WiiU to play all that often.

Made a lot of progress. Just got Lloyd and now I'm leveling him up so he won't die in 5 seconds when I head to the Duncan Factory north of Merryville.

Mother 3 being localized immediately like Beginnings is not likely, but announcing it for later this year or early 2016 is possible.

Bought this ASAP once I saw it was released. Wonder if they changed Giegue to Giygas for continuity's sake or if the original translation was kept. I got my brother hooked on Earthbound, so naturally he jumped on this right away. The oldschool Dragon Quest gameplay might be a bit of a shock for him. It's definitely a very different beast compared to its sequel. I do love me the almighty PK Beam γ and PK Freeze Ω something fierce, though.

On a side note, what in blue blazes is this game rated T for? The game already got Censored to Heck and Back™. There's nothing in the game to make it deserve that rating. I can't think of a single thing in it that makes it worse than Final Fantasy I, or even Pokemon. If there's no details when the ESRB page adds the rating info, I'm going to assume Nintendo asked for a T rating and did the same for Earthbound. Yes, the ESRB will give a higher rating on demand. Can't ask for a lower one, though.

Protips for newcomers to the game:

  • USE Bread to start a crumb trail. It gives you Bread Crumbs, which gives you a warp-point to where you used the bread. Perfect for all the crazy places in the game.
  • Status attacks are effective. BrainCyclone, PSI-Block, and PK Beam γ/PK Freeze Ω work much more often than comparable moves in the sequels.
  • If you don't buff/debuff you will get destroyed. There's a reason a significant amount of PSI are relegated to buffing, shielding, and debuffing. This reason is that most of them stack and will reduce/increase damage by a significant amount. PSI Shield and Power Shield are particularly effective.
  • Don't be afraid to run. Ninten has 4-D Slip, make liberal use of it when you're outmatched or otherwise about to die.
  • Ninten has Asthma. Very few enemies trigger it, but if they show up and you're unprepared, you will have a very bad day. Have at least one Asthma Spray ready for use at all times.

I could see it happening. Nintendo wouldn't even have to do any major work to localize the game. Tomato and the rest of the Mother 3 Fan Translation team have given them an open invitation to use their work as-is or as a base at no cost. It's less work for Nintendo (a LOT less, given how much text is in Mother 3), therefore significantly cheaper to produce, therefore more profit to be made. It's not unheard of for companies to license fan translations. Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Steins;Gate, and The Fruit of Grisaia's official releases were originally fan translations.

A lot of people tend to underestimate how much it costs to hire professional translators, especially for text-heavy games like RPGs or Visual Novels. On that note, Mother 3's fan translation was done by an industry professional with years of experience translating/localizing anime and video games. Tomato has an insane pedigree. He's worked on Kingdom Hearts II, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Attack on Titan, Lupin the 3rd, Fairy Tail, Soul Eater, and plenty more. If Nintendo plans on releasing Mother 3 westward in the future - and they're crazy if they don't - I assume they'll bite on this offer. Having access to a free translation done by an industry professional out of love for the series is quite the juicy worm. There isn't a fan translation out there as high-quality as Mother 3's.

Plus, they could charge whatever ridiculous price they want and the rabid fans (myself included) will eat it up regardless, just like this and Earthbound.

The swearing would be easy to remove. It's not like swearing even exists in Japanese in the traditional sense. As for the Magypsies, they could just casually remove the passive references to their masculinity. Or not. It doesn't really matter when the game's going to be rated T anyway. You also say "etc.". I've 100%'d the game twice and beaten it 8 times; I'm curious what other things they would need to change. It's definitely not the music. They used that excuse for why Earthbound wasn't released on Wii VC.

Not much. Just a couple of lines of dialog that I've come across when chatting with npcs, and when the group is leaving Saturn Valley via bird cage, Boney is hanging onto Lucas's pants, thus pulling it down a little, and revealing his rear. They might wanna cover that up.

@Nacho_chicken - Probably the references to "Strip-joints" and the like. Was really surprised that one slipped through the net...not that I'm complaining.

Are you talking about Mother 1? What part was that at? I don't remember that at all. In fact, I just skimmed through a text dump of the prototype, and I didn't spot any such references. Was surprised to see the word "crap" twice and the words "kill" and "die" used quite a bit, though.

Unless you're talking about Mother 3. They can just slap a T on that one and call it a day. There's nothing in the Mother 3 fan translation that would push it past a T. Not even that 4-pixel buttcrack @Nintendofan64 mentioned.

Nope, Mother 1. In Merryville, a guy tells you Duncan Inc.'s planning to build a strip joint, and there's a sign where they plan to put it.

Yep, it's in there. They probably cut the funding before the editor caught that one. In context, it definitely seems more like they meant "strip mall". EDIT: Will report back with findings from Japanese version. RE: It's a strip club.

Still, this is definitely the tamest game I've ever seen get a T.
I mean, Etrian Odyssey III has these (kind of NSFW) in it, and it's E10+. Either Nintendo asked for the T, or the ESRB considers text saying that "people don't want a strip joint" as worse than showing off a lot of cleavage. I'd side with the latter, seeing how they love taking text references to anything out of context.

It's also PEGI 3. I'm beginning to trust them over the ESRB nowadays...

...Pretty much, yeah. Then again, even if the Digital Event wasn't...bad, this would probably still be my favorite thing from E3.

Yes, we all need a bit of this:

Go support EarthBound Beginnings on Wii U to make it happen faster!

At first I thought it wasn't as great as EarthBound and Mother 3, but now that I'm 20 hours into it I love it just as much.
And it looks great in HD, way more charming than on the original hardware or an emu.

Does anyone else find the choice of Beginnings as annoying for a name? I don't know why but it justr seems cheap and slapped on and I know it's a silly thing to complain about.

Maybe it should've been Earthbound Begins.

Then the snes one can be renamed Earthbound The Dark Kinght.

And the GBA one can be Earthbound The Dark Knight Rises when it finally releases here.
