Topic: Do you use save states?

For the most part I am pretty adamant on not cheating the first time I play through a game, so I prefer not to use save states. However, I threw in the towel on the final boss of DK64. I simply don't have the time or patience to go through that all in one sitting. Not to mention I've already put in around 40 hours to the game and I am wanting to move on to something else, and I am nowhere near 101% lol. In addition to this, I don't mind using save states on some of the really hard NES games that I never could beat as a kid. How about you guys, do you have certain criteria on when to use save states?

I tend to use save states often as an actual save file, making a save state when I quit the game. Usually I do that as I also save in game, using the save state as a quick anchor if I forgot where I got in the game and need the ability to "rewind" time after playing a bit and remembering what was going on XD
They are also very useful for games with scattered "save zones", I know that's part of the mechanics, but if I suddenly have to quit the game asap I don't see the reason for waste my progress with save states able to help me.

I abuse save states only when a game starts to get on my nerve with the punishments, like forcing me to rewatch cutscenes or replay long sessions everytime I fail a challange or an action. I prefer to "cheat" and save state for retry more rapidly, then play "fair" and turn the game in an enraging experience ^_^;;;

(I'm not sure, but this topic sound familiar, maybe there was another similar one? I'm sure there are a couple related to save states XD)

Whoops, looks like your right. There is another save state thread. It hasn't been updated in almost a year, but feel free to lock this if necessary. I can just copy and paste my comment in the old thread

I tend to lean towards not using them, just using the in-game saving is usually enough for me.

Unless it's one of those unfair retro games or games that use passwords instead of save files.

(It's ok, since the previous thread is so old, we can use this one instead)

I use the save states simplay as it's quicker and easier than the proper save function.

Only used it once for Battle Before Dawn Hector mode, it's pretty well known that if the NPC Jaffar dies then it'll be impossible to complete the level but at the same time it's impossible to reach him until a few turns after he's likely taken a lot of damage. So I created a save state just after he decided to be not stupid for once in case of power cuts and it turned out a power cut did happen.

I've used them for bits I know I can do, but will take several attempts, for example getting the blue coins on Rainbow Ride in SM64, put a save right before I go for them and just restart from there rather than the start of the level. Saved hours of time redoing it until I got it. Apart from that as a save state as previously mentioned.

I use them for games I already beaten like Paper Mario, I maxed out on 999 coins after I got the card on my second run. For games I never played, I tend to not use them.

Absolutely. It's more flexible and I've had issues with VC games hanging in the past (this was likely down to hard drive communication issues), so save on exit isn't something I want to depend on.

I also use it for games that are too damn hard even with built-in checkpoints. I'd never have finished Earthbound without it (though given how tedious the end sequence was even with them I might have saved a lot of time chucking it in instead!) and Contra III would also be much harder to play.

So a combination of assured save point and anti-frustration machine is my angle in the use of them. I don't see it so much as "cheating" as saving time and allowing me to play a game I might otherwise give up on completely.

Haha, yeah but this particular boss fight is pretty excruciating though. You have to use the Kongs one after the other, and if one Kong loses you have to start all over. Technically I beat it correctly, just saved a lot of time replaying rounds I already beat. At least that's what I tell myself

Of course. Life's too short to worry about "cheating" in a singleplayer game. Just play what way makes you actually have fun. Ain't not skin off my bones.

Some old school games justify their $50+ price tag ($80 in today's dollars) with their difficulty. Die in battle? Have fun spending 20 min retracing your steps from your last save point so you can try again. That extends overall game length, but not necessarily for the better. These days, those same games are 1/10 the price and I don't see any need to extend game time with unnecessary repetition. If Wii U's save state feature can get me some of that time back, I'm all for it.

Save states are also useful for those that have children or younger siblings who use the system as well. They might mess up your save file in some way (losing progress, wasting lives, using items, etc). Save states allow you to continue your game with no worry - just pray they don't create a save state and overwrite the one you set.

Well yes, but it's mainly when I'm at a certain parts that are just annoying and where I goof up I could potentially have to start all over.

Only if (for whatever reason) when I quit, my save files are erased. In that case, I save & quit, then on the title screen, I create a save state.

The only time I ever use save states is in the case of RPG's for easy money and winning and frustrating moments that really make you want to use save states. Other than that, I try to play it as legitimately as possible.
