What controllers would I need if I wanted to download games from the Wii Virtual console. Since, the Wii U is lacking 64 games I figured I would look into which controller I need.

Gamecube controllers work too if you have the mayflash adapter.

I cannot vouch for the U.S., however the Classic Controllers have been long discontinued in Australia. The only "Classic Controllers" that are readily available, are the Super Smash Bros. themed "Fight Pad" controllers (e.g. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Link, Donkey Kong, Wario etc.). Like the Classic Controllers, they will require a Wii Remote to draw power from.

It does depend on what consoles you're looking at. The NES, TG-16, SMS and I think the Genesis/MD do not require a classic controller, you can play those games with a remote on its side. The other systems do need one however.

Did not know that, I wanted to get one for ages and this will probably speed up my purchase.

Mainly play MP2 on my Wii VC at the moment and I use 4 Classic controllers, be nice to use Gamecube controllers instead.
