Topic: Castlevania vs Mega Man

I posted this in the Wii U eShop recommendations topic a couple of days ago and got no reply. So I figured I would make a new topic to get people's opinion. I have limited experience with both of these series. With Castlevania I played some of the DS games and with Mega Man I played the X series. After watching sequelitus I want to play these series now. Which would people recommend? (I am going to be purchasing some games from one of these series to finish up the remaining points needed for the end of the Digital Deluxe promotion) Castlevania vs Mega Man

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.

Castlevania even though I like Mega Man more.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Super Castlevania IV is a masterpiece, as is Mega Man X. All of the NES Mega Man games are good as well.

Both are great, but Super Castlevania IV is a winner to me. That's how remakes/sequels should be made. Improved controls, no cheapness, unlike the 1st or 3rd one, it felt fair.

With Mega Man though - don't get me wrong, it's a great series, but if you will go through some of them back to back, you will feel like ben there, done that, played one = played all etc.. If you want to play try it, just buy 1-3, those are the best ones (although I don't like 2nd, because of it's cheapness and totally BS platforming at times)

This made me more interested in the original than 4. But I will take that into consideration.

If your Castlevania experience started with the DS, be wary, because early games in the series are wildly different. They're much more linear and, in my opinion, haven't aged that well. Not a popular opinion, but I really don't get why people love Super Castlevania IV; even my nostalgia-colored glasses weren't able to make me enjoy it much on the Wii U Virtual Console.

As for Mega Man, go for it. Even the NES games are still fantastic - in fact, I'd say they are the best in the series.

I recommend you start with either Mega Man 2 or 3, as those are the best. The first Mega Man is a bit too rough around the edges, and 4-6 aren't as good as those two. Either way, they're all great.

Eh, I'm not a huge Egoraptor fan, but he can have his opinions. I could get pretty deep comparing the original game and Super Castlevania IV, but I'd rather not. Having played through the original Castlevania just recently, I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first time through. It simply pales in comparison to both Castlevania III and IV. If being able to control your jumps and whip in 8 directions ruins SCIV for you, I'm sorry, but I don't get it. Yes, the NES games were hard, but that was because they were so limiting. You have so much more freedom in SCIV and it makes it much more enjoyable to me. Yes, it is easier that the NES games, but it's not an easy game by any means, you'll still die plenty on times because the levels are designed around those freedoms you have.

Anyway, sorry for the little rant. As far as classic Vania games go (not the Metroidvania ones), I'd rank them like so:
Super Castlevania IV
Castlevania Bloodlines
Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Castlevania

Mega Man X and Mega Man 2 should give you a good idea if you'll like the Mega Man games.

Super Castlevania IV is for people who don't like Castlevania games.

Other than Simon's Quest it is the worst.

This is the best order :

Rondo of Blood
X68000 (Chronicles on PS1)
III (Famicom version)
III (NES Version)
Bloodlines
Adventure : Rebirth
I (Second time through it becomes broken).

The rest are not worth getting. (Any of the SNES ones).

There again Megaman X is not really like most of the other Megaman games (Or even other X games). I think it is much better (Others probably think the same about Super Castlevania IV). The slowdown is really bad in Super Castlevania IV (Doesn't have anywhere near as many problems on the Super Famicom cartridge) but it isn't as good as a proper Castlevania game.

The first three Mega Man X games are fairly close to each other, and I say that as someone who does buster only runs through them. It's just that the first is the most streamlined, has the best music, and is the easiest to get into.

I actually already have the whole Mega Man X trilogy. I was more focused on the original series for Mega Man and Castlevania. For Castlevania I am also interested in the GBA games.

The older Mega Man games have aged better than the older Castlevania games, but the newer Castlevania games destroy the newer Mega Man games.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood is the pinnacle of the linear Castlevanias, and as far as I am aware, it's only on Wii virtual console, so no deluxe points for you. The further back you get, the harder it is to appreciate them. The GBA games are very good, though. Aria of Sorrow for GBA is arguably the best game in the entire series besides Symphony of the Night. Pick that one up. Aria of Sorrow > Circle of the Moon > Harmony of Dissonance

Mega Man games, however, are some of the few NES games that have aged well. Pick them up, especially 2 and 3. In terms of quality, I'd say: 2 = 3 > 5 > 6 = 1 > 4, but that's just my opinion.

What? I like Castlevania and I love Super Castlevania IV. Just because they made some changes and the game is easier doesn't mean it's not a good Castlevania game. The difficulty isn't the defining feature of the series.

I'm curious as to what a proper Castlevania game is. Super Castlevania IV has all the elements of the past games (aside from Simon's Quest), the only things they really changed were the stiff jumping and multi-directional whipping.

Awesome idea! Mega man vs. Castlevania! Asymmetrical play with one person on a gamepad, and the other on the TV!

Since I had the Mega Man X trilogy already, I am thinking of getting Mega Man Zero, Castlevania 1, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

Get the Mega Man classic games. They're where a majority of my time went with the NES VC games.
As for my order: 3>4>6>2>1 (Still have yet to finish 5, but that's what happens when I buy on the Wii U VC and not the 3DS one...)

If you do decide to get Mega Man Zero, be warned, it will kick your butt. The Classic and X series are nowhere near as difficult as Zero, not to say it's not good, but it is quite the challenge.
