After the announcement of the Wii U, Nintendo's shares went down by 5.7 percent to $212 per share. This is the lowest that Nintendo's shares have been in 5 years, back when the Gamecube was departing. Apparently, shareholders were expecting to see more of a bang for Nintendo's new console. What do you think of the news?

Don't worry Nintendo is doing just fine. The system isn't even out yet. Why don't we worry about this when the time comes?

Well, a lot of the people I know IRL are really iumpressed with the new system, people that previously only like the 360, so iit's doing pretty good as far as that's concerned.

People are always sceptical and afraid at first for radical new things like this. There's no predicting for investors if it will either be a big hit, or a big miss, since it's something that's never been done before.
NIntendo takes risks and tries to be a pioneer in gaming, sometimes it doesnt pay off. What we have here is a bunch of shareholders who was either thinking Nintendo was going to make a powerfull, more traditional console or come up with the wii2... and fair enough although it is more or less a wii2, the new controller would make these shareholders uneasy. I bet they didnt like the wii either when they first announced it but given time it was a major success. Im sure the wii U will do just fine and share will pick up again. Im not so keen on the wii U myself but I do have some faith in Nintendo and im sure they will make it count, it may not be as big as the wii mind because I cant see it drawing in nongamers like the wii did but im sure it will have potential.

I would buy shares if I actually had faith in the WiiU, but I don't. I do have faith in the 3DS, but I fear the WiiU might fail miserably.
I dont think it will fail miserably, but its a tough market out there and casuals will be happy with the wii and Nintendo will be aiming for the 360/PS3 crowd. What I would have prefered if the new controller for the WiiU would have been a stripped down 3DS (single screen, without storage, etc.) but keeping the important hardware then at least the 3DS would have been compatible and usuable as a remote. I can imagine the 3DS taking off in a big way and if your household had a couple of them already it wouldnt have been a big jump to buy a wiiU

I forgot who said it but I'll paraphrase. The market is a bunch of people rolling dice, what we end up with is a bunch of people who rolled the last ten sixes thinking they have some sort of skill. They don't, they were just lucky. Analysts like to talk about how they can read the market but they can't, they can't predict the future and they can't read the market. At best they're on a lucky streak that could end at any minute.

Yeah the games press should probably avoid commenting on financial news stories. With very few exceptions they're not qualified in the slightest to analyse what's going on, or ask the right questions to the right people.
If I read the first article I saw on this correctly, not the one above, they said they were responding to the "lack of social integration" of the Wii U. Maybe investors were expecting them to talk about and show a new online social space for the Wii U and all they got was "yeah, everyone will like it. This is the Wii for U".
Still, they're mostly guessing. They don't know for certain and they're talking a stab in the dark. I'm sure some took their money out of Nintendo after seeing the price drop thinking "oh this is bad, let's get out of here".

""It is unclear who Nintendo is targeting with the Wii U and where it wants to go. The new machine doesn't ease growing concerns about prospects for specialized game consoles like the Wii, when many people play games on their smartphones. The bar for a new console is a lot higher now than it was when the first Wii went on the market"
"I don't really see Nintendo's strategy yet. There are concerns that it may turn out to be expensive with the touch-screen controller"
"I have only one concern, the ports. Unfortunately, now Nintendo is offering a console that would allow the content developed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 to be ported over to the Wii U. While Nintendo announced core content such as Darksiders II and Batman, I highly doubt either will be successful on the platform. They will be profitable, no doubt, due to the minimal costs to port content between systems, but I doubt any ported content will ever break the top 5 on the Wii U"
and for some balance "Nintendo has done it again! Staying with their core strategy of being original, Nintendo has announced a truly revolutionary product. [...] I have seen it and played it and I must say I was blown away by the Wii U's capabilities. The Wii U is truly the best of both core and casual interactive entertainment. I have absolutely no doubt the Wii U will be a commercial success"
