Yesterday I finished Skyward sword, so here is a little opinion of mine. If you haven't finished it yet: There are a few spoilers ahead!!
Overall I think it's a fun Zelda, but definitely not among the best! The graphics are a mixed bag. Sometimes beautiful, some times bad. Nintendo tried a cross between Windwaker style and Twilight princess style, but in my opinion both are better then Skyward sword style. The music is also mixed. Some tracks are awesome and some are a bit less. As for swordplay: It is fun and it works. But it didn't blew me away as much as the touchscreen controls in Phantom hourglass and Spirit tracks. Though in both instances I would not cry if they went back to button controls. I don't have trouble with the schemes Nintendo came up with so far. The first bunch of bokoblins and the first Ghirahim battle gave me lots of trouble though.
As for the structure of the game: There are only 3 different areas and sadly they aren't linked. However, they are pretty big. Especially Lanayru desert was big and probably the best part of the game, with the cool robots, prehistoric snails/prawns and all the timeshift stone stuff. However, there is not really a single dungeon that really stands out. Lanayru mining facility is probably the best, though it has not the magnitude of lets say City in the sky from Twilight princess. The most dissapointing dungeon probably is Ancient cistern. It looks awesome and you hope for a very big and complex dungeon. But when you have discovered you have to flip certain lily leafs to get further, the whole level is pretty short and easy. And the whip isn't that great either since you can't hit enemies with it like in Spirit tracks. The boss was pretty fun though. Overall the game's puzzles are very easy. Only in the pirate hideout and in the last level there was a instance where I had to think for a few minutes to find the solution. But for the rest it was smooth sailing. Spirit tracks had much harder puzzles.
The best item probably was the gust bellows. And the beetle was pretty fun too. The silent realms where a lot better then the boring Wolf-parts from Twilight princess, because they where shorter and I think also in a smaller space. It wasn't that bad. I also loved the Kikwi's and the Mogma's. And the flying was fun too. The biggest dissapointment though was The sky. This could easily have been the sea from Windwaker in scope. But sadly it's just a very small hub with almost nothing to do. And it's only around the 50 hour mark that you learn your true objective.
It isn't a small game though! It took me 75 hours and I have still not found everything. While I am not a big fan of Ghirahim (though I loved the scary ritual he pulled on Zelda), his fights where probably the hardest and most fun. The first battle looked boring to me on the internet, but when I finally played it I had to admit it was great! Never before did a first boss give me so much trouble! And he did look during the last battle! As for Fi: Awesome design but bad voice. I hate autotune!
So what should Nintendo do next? Going back to the Windwaker style (I guess they can improve it a lot on the Wii u), or using the awesome realistic style they showed in the Wii u demo, or coming up with a totally new style. As for Skyward sword style: I only want to see it again if they can REALLY improve it! And I also want Young Link back. What's wrong with young Link in a homeconsole Zelda nowadays? I would love to see Retro studios or Nintendo's Tokyo studio on the game. But if they decide not to, then at least get the puzzle-makers from Spirit tracks to come up with awesome puzzles again but this time in a 3D eviroment! But the next homeconsole Zelda is far of. First we get a 3DS Zelda. I am sure about that. It will have 3D. The rest is a guess. But the last 2 handheld Zelda's where great (especially Spirit tracks), so I look forward to it!
So overall it was a mixed Zelda, but I had certainly fun. Let's see what they do with the next Zelda!
1. your review had less factual flaws than Gamespot's. Not even joking. 2. Yeah, it took too long to figure out what you were supposed to do. They basically put the halfway point plot twist 3/4 of the way through, and it felt like you had no story reason to do more stuff at that point. The story there was "find more stuff to enter the gate" and that's it. It isn't like Zelda ever lets the story get in the way of gameplay so I don't see the point. Of course, the story towards the end was great. Classic stuff.
3. As I said, Nintendo should eventually make some crazy different type of Zelda for Wii U and something more familiar on 3DS (preferably a game with more of the Wind Waker pirates).
Anybody know how to make it look not horrible on a 4:3 non- HDTV?
I just zoomed in still works fine with the wii remote and looks exactly the same graphically

Just finished Skyward yesterday in just under 50 hours. Greatest Zelda yet, probably my favourite game ever. I think Demise was fairly easy for a final boss though, although I think that having the Hylian Shield rather than the Goddess shield probably helped a lot though, seeing as it literally took no damage from his hits. I think I might give Here mode a go, but I honestly can't see myself getting past Tentulas if it's double damage. Anyway, I've still got tons of games to play at the moment (See Sig) so it might be a long time before I try it anyway. Loved the game though, can't wait for the Wii U Zelda!
So much yellow & gold in this game! My eyes! My eyes! SS was a great game....most of the time. It felt like an epic fetch quest for the remaining 30. Which kinda sucked, I was hoping they would shake the fountations a bit more. But I do think the next console Zelda will shake it up more, I did get the feeling that the Wii hardware held them back a bit while playing SS.
This was a great game; definitely ranks in my top 5 games.
Here are my thoughts in a summarized form: -Motion control was just okay. Personally I found myself having to center the cursor almost every time I used an item or fought an enemy. That annoyed me a lot. Had a lot of trouble preparing my thunderbolt strikes (?) against Demise. Also rolling bombs was kind of difficult for me. -Length of the game: Compared to TP, the last Zelda Wii game, SS was kind of short. Disappointing? Not really, but a longer game would have been appreciated. -Dungeon difficulty: IMO, the Forest Temple (aka the first temple) in TP was harder than the first through fourth (Skyview through Ancient Cistern) dungeons. The fact that you don't encounter a multi-floor dungeon until the Ancient Cistern was surprising. However, the Ancient Cistern ranks in my list of favorite dungeons. The Kolokotos fight was amazing. Needed a "OoT Water Temple" in terms of difficulty, though. -One cool thing about the Sandship was that they integrated the boss fight with the setting of the ship. Dodging barrels and making your way up to the deck was very creative. However I don't understand where Tentalus came from, especially since the only water at the time came from the small boat with the Timeshift Stone...and that didn't seem like enough water to cover Tentalus. -Music was outstanding! -Flying around the sky was certainly less dull than sailing on a boat or a conducting a train. -I'm glad there was a 'boss rush' mode. However it was near the end, which I didn't really like. -Fi was annoying when your batteries were running low. Other than that she was fine. -The whole game in general was kind of easy. -Silent Realms were a lot of fun and challenging at the same time. When you collected the Triforce pieces in the Sky Keep, I thought I had to do 3 more Silent Realms since the graphics were the same XD -I felt like the entire story until the Ancient Cistern was kind of tacked on. Following Zelda got old after the Earth temple : -Sometimes you take too much damage. Most of the damage I took was in the form of 1 whole heart, and usually by a weaker enemy such as a Deku Baba, etc. In TP damage from a Deku Baba would probably deal 1/2 a heart of damage. Same thing for touching a boss, such as Scaldera. -Liked the graphics! -Um, what happened to Link and the Item Check girl once he reunited with Zelda? -Forsaken Fortress Part 2 ftw (Right before the Fire Sanctuary) -What does Ghirahim mean when he tells Link that he's "a demon...no a weapon..." right before the final battle with him? I didn't get that. -I didn't like the item pouches that much...it really limited your inventory. I would think that add-ons like a bigger bomb bag or a quiver would be 'attachable' to the item in a sense and that it wouldn't require taking a pouch space. -The script was terrific. Great use of 'advanced' vocabulary, especially among Demise and Ghirahim. -Love the plot twists and surprises. Ghirahim appearing out of nowhere and taking Zelda right when she awoke from her slumber scared me, but it was a good scare -New items were great.
Overall a great game; I'll definitely be playing this sometime soon. Can't wait for the next one!
So I'm loving the game so far but I was just wondering if there is a left hand mode, at some parts it can be kind of irritating but for the most part it still is very playable ,I tried putting the wiimote in my right hand but it just won't work for me.
Finished the Sandship in about 1 hour. Wow that was short and boring... I was hoping for an epic boss, but no it wasn't. Go into the boss room just to find that I have to run back up to the deck to fight the boss and what an easy boss that was! Cut its tentacles, fire his eye, slash his eye, rinse and repeat 3 times. Move on to the 2nd stage, slice tentacles, fire his eye, cut eye... job done. I found the mid-boss harder...
I can safely say though, none of the bosses so far are amazing... they're all cakewalks and not a single one of them has had me running away in terror that I'm about to die! They don't look amazing and I don't even think any of them should be called "bosses".
I sure hope Nintendo makes the dungeons/temples and bosses far harder than these in future Zelda games. Skyward Sword is amazing, but it's lackluster dungeons and bosses just ruin it for me.
Same old demon. Nothing ever really changes does it? I think the bosses so far are the best of any Zelda! Maybe you're just to good at video games. Twilight princess has the best dungeons though but this one isn't that bad.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.

Unfortunately not, sorry, I do think that a left handed verion is a feature they should have added (even though I'm right handed and it wouldn't affect me, a lot of my friends are left handed), and given the extra year they took to 'get it just right', they could have at least thrown in SOMETHING that would make it easier for left handed players.
The whole package didn't even feel like 'the Zelda I've been waiting for' once. It was a great Zelda game, but it wasn't the series best. Dungeons were too easy and on the short side, Items were limited. I hope, for the next console Zelda: Graphics like SS (They do fit the series), big open world, and no 2 parallel worlds: just one world. So no Sky-Surface, Light-Dark or whatever combination.
Changed name: Old name was JDT! Ponies will take over the world. Just deal with it. 3DS FC: 1375-7189-4496

Nope. I loved the bosses in Twilight Princess, they were amazing, but they were also a fair bit too easy... the dungeons were also really good and actually quite expansive. Skyward Sword's dungeons and bosses just seem really small and short...

Agreed, but IMO coming back to the areas you visited was clever. However, I felt that getting an item in, say, the Lanayru Desert and then having to go back to the sky and diving into the Eldin Volcano just to get a Piece of Heart or Goddess Cube was annoying.
Perhaps a 'warp function' a la TP/PH/ST, etc. is in order for the next Zelda game?
While we're on the topic of easy bosses, have you ever encountered a difficult LoZ boss? The first boss that comes to mind as 'difficult' is probably the Gyorg Pair from MC.

Funny, as a certified lefty who uses the Wiimote in his left hand in every other Wii game, I didn't have a hard time adjusting to holding it in my right for Skyward Sword. It's not like the game requires a ton of precision with its motion controls.
Worst and most overrated Zelda game to this date, that doesnt mean it is a bad game, but any other Zelda in the past has been far better for its time and this one is little more than a set of pretty small and easy dungeons. Technically this minizelda is pretty well done, but it is too linear, short, easy, focused on gimmicking, sometimes reminds me more a Mario game than a Zelda one. It seems Nintendo created a Zelda designed for the non-zelda followers on purpose, a Zelda for casuals, for these that would consider TP as an horror creepy game.

Gyorg from Majora's Mask, hardest boss EVER... I can still only beat it about 10 percent of the time, makes any other boss in the series a piece of cake
