It looks really fun. The only things I want are more characters and some co-op rather than just competitive, such as puzzles and such. I can deal without online (though ti would be cool). Other than that, it looks great.
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
I like the penguin suit showcased in the Nintendo Channel trailer. The levels shown in the same trailer look a lot more exciting, much to my relief. No other characters shown, so I am guessing Peach has been captured as part of the story again. Oh well. How the game plays is more important, though it would have been nice to see four characters with different attributes.
@Adam Maybe when you rescue her you can play as her this time!
if she had her floating ability from SMB2 US, that would be sweet.

The press release suggests there aren't. Doesn't really matter, though it would have been nice not to have two toads. Of course, Luigi is hardly more than a recolored Mario in this context, so having a recolored Toad isn't awful.
The toads suck, why not just replace them with Wario and Waluigi? How awesome would that be?
Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage - to move in the opposite direction. - Albert Einstein on the Wii
But Yoshi is there, so there doesn't seem to be a removal on characters from post-SMB3.
btw, I notice that there's a blue toad and a yellow toad. Waluigi and Wario both have a blue(ish) and yellow color scheme. Just wanted to point that out, it's probably nothing though.

Mario World IS post-SMB3... Nintendo has said this is more Mario World based than Mario Brothers based.
However, I wouldn't give up all hope yet. The press release said there were cameos from other characters, I think. Might not mean playable, but maybe we'll see them. I personally hope not. They're boring, overused characters. Two plumbers is enough. But doesn't matter to me. I don't play Mario for the character development.
It looks fun, but it screams WASTED POTENTAL. Here's why:
*So much is recycled from NSMB. Music, worlds, red coins, etc. I know its a sequel, but at least have different music. *Lame character roster. There should only be 1 Toad, and instead add Wario or something. *No online. This game would be great online, but Nintendo dropped the ball as usual *NSMB 1 was really easy. Lets hope this won't carry over.
Now Playing: Modern Warfare 2 and Mobilized, Tekken 6, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online

@slambert I know Luigi is somewhat different as a character in some games, but in this game and most Mario games he is just a recolored Mario. I don't see why two colored Toads is so much worse. What's worse is people think Wario and Waluigi are good characters.
While they clearly recycled some music, the worlds are not from NSMB DS, and we only heard music from level one. How can that be "so much"? And red coins have been a staple since Mario 64. No one complains that yellow coins have returned; why should red coins be worse?
I agree with your other two comments though, but they don't concern me much. Local multiplayer is more fun for this type of game. I didn't like playing LBP online, but offline it's a lot of fun with friends. This looks much the same. Would have been nice though.
And with 80 levels, I can't see some of them not being challenging. Miyamoto said later levels should be hard.
it would be interesting if they had the option to unlock different SMB characters to play as throughout the game as rewards for getting red coins, star coins, etc., like Wario or Waluigi, Peach or Daisy, or enemies like Koopas. i wish there would be physical differences between the characters, though (Luigi jumping higher, Toad being quicker, etc.)... couldn't really tell much about that from the video.

@Adam: actually, red coins have been around since SMW2: Yoshi's Island.
Also, i would agree with you about local multiplayer being more fun, but if you're like me, it's hard to get together with friends between work and school and blah-blah-blah. it would be much easier to be able to find players online for co-op play... however, at that point you'd have to deal with hackers (like in Mario Kart now). i'd at least like to have the option for online play.

Yea, I completely agree it should be an option. I joked in another thread (or maybe it was this one, I lose track) that I was happy it wasn't in, but really, I'd like to see it. I'm moving soon and would like to be able to play it with my friend or my sister, but oh well, there'll be holidays for that, and it can't be that hard to meet people who like Mario. He's a pretty popular guy, after all.
About the red coins, whoops! You're right, of course. And yea, I hope more characters can be unlocked, preferably with special abilities. The press release hints that this might be true. NSMB DS did have Luigi unlockable and with different physics (I think... I forget), so the Peach unlockable at least seems reasonable. Hopefully NSMB will be a long-living series and we'll eventually see this in sequels, though it won't be "New" after awhile. I always thought that was an odd title.
Feelings are mixed. I've never been the biggest fan of Four Swords co-op/vs. play and this looks a bit to similar. On the other hand though you look to have a solid Mario game with the tight level design and play mechanics we all know and love. Overall I wish they saved this for next year and gave us SMG2 instead. Especially since it's almost finished already. Oh well.
