Well my daughter has just started playing this game ,i am astounded by the graphics it blows away any wii game ive ever seen , i know Nintendo are not graphic centric , but i do find it strange that they really havent moved forward and in fact may have taken backward steps ?
Also imho they have not produced any game that compares to the "mode 7" of the Snes ie "Pilotwings" & "Mario Kart" and to confirm this , they seem to be unable to produce these games for the Wii's virtual console !!!!
Or am i talking a load of tosh ?????

You are talking a load of tosh. Compare Muramasa: Demon Blade to Yoshi's Story, and compare Mario Kart Wii to the SNES version. QED.

Sorry I just don't agree, the wii to me is clearly better in terms of graphics, but then remember Yoshis Story is 2D, so comparing it 3D isn't really fair, I mean does it look better than Banjo Kazooie, its hard to say, if you prefer the look of sprites over polygons maybe try Wario Land on wii, I bought Yoshis Story when it was first released and thought the graphics and art style where great, still are really, shame the gameplay couldn't match.

Well i think thats the real problem , the fact that "Yoshis story" is 2D yet appears more 3D than most Wii games !! Also Wii Mario Kart has no real feeling of 3D compared to the Snes in which there was a real feeling of it beeing on 3 planes ? Maybe its just the lack of texture use on the Wii that makes seem rather flat in comparrison ? "Muramasa: Demon Blade " yes looks very pretty just like "Okami" but still it looks like a Watercolour painted on a flat canvass ?

So wait: in summary 2D looks for 3D that 3D!?!?? LOL WUT?

BTW: Mario galaxy looks really 3D! But you need a vid, not a screenie.

Sure SNES MK had 2d sprites that made it look 3D. But u cant tell me that it Mario Kart Wii does not look 3d.

Maybe its more of a feeling of 3D that i think the Wii lacks compared to mode 7 of Snes , the actual feeling of 3 dimensions rather than just the look of 3 dimensions ?
Yes maybe its just me !!!! but i was just stunned by such old graphics as Yoshis story and still await a game to have the impact and sense of spatial awareness as Kart & Pilotwings (yes apart from Galaxy to some degree)

uhhh...i really dont think yoshi story is even a great choice for a good looking n64 game, try ocarina of time or even mario 64

Mode 7 is awful. If you think it is a grahics landmark, than yes, you would not have a high opinion of MKWii...

And if the N54 is so much more impressive, lets compare MKWii with MK64?????

Lulz, but then again MK64, half of it is sprites, not 3-d, so you may be cool with that...

IGN: The holiday Wii lineup looks thin for the hardcore crowd. We see this. Gamers see this. What, if anything, is Nintendo planning to address it?

Oh good, I am neither a gamer or hardcore. Saves me from having to be IGNorant.

... that's exactly what they were going for with Okami, though, and I'm pretty sure they're going for similar with M:DB. :/

Take a look at Mario's overalls and you'll probably see a LOT of detail. The characters and stages in Brawl are impressive looking from a distance and even more impressive up close. While Yoshi's Story does have some great visuals, look at the lava in that picture and the characters that aren't very detailed. Look at the background in the Brawl picture, it's absolutely full of detail and massive, something Yoshi's Story just can't compete with.

Or there's the Mario comparison.

http://wiimedia.ign.com/wii/image/article/831/831684/super-ma... (Super Mario Galaxy)
Mario 64 has blocky character designs, blocky-looking buildings and areas, low detail, and the ground textures aren't terribly impressive. Galaxy has amazing textures, take a look at the water for example, which has a realistic-looking reflection of the nearby castle and looks good. The characters are much less blocky and look more full of life.

N64 games may look pretty good graphically, but when you actually stop and look at a Wii game or look at how great they move, there's no denying that Wii has far superior graphics, as to be expected from a system that came about a decade later.

Great points and very well made !
Im so old .........i think its these rose tinted glass's im wearing that is affecting my judgement )

Yes i know that and i think Okami is fantastic , but like many Wii games they all seem so very flat , its not really a complaint as such , just an observation , which made wonder "Why" ?

Okami was probably the worst game to 'observe' being 'flat', though, considering they worked very hard to get that flat, watercolor-on-canvas look (i'm pretty sure there's some extras on the game after you've beaten it where they show concept art with a 3D version of Ammy with fur and all... it wasn't that great to be honest). you would have been better off choosing a different game to 'observe'.

No the observation was made after seeing "Yoshis story" which had textures leaping from the screen !!!

i'm sorry, i don't understand your reply...? The people who worked on Yoshi's Story worked hard to get that 2.5D look, whereas that's not what the creators of Okami were going for at all visually. you're comparing two games with two completely different visual styles in an attempt to call the one on the current-gen system graphically inferior, which makes no sense.

What TV are you playing the game on? N64 games all look like blocky trash...and this game is damn-near entirely 2D...if you're playing on a CRT you probably can't tell much of a difference between resolution between systems....plus 2D can only age so much--there's better resolution and more frames of animation (and stylistic changes) but not a lot else. Play Warioland: Shake It! I think that game trumps Yoshi's on all fronts, graphically.

Nothing other than pixelation jumped out about their textures. I'd rather my high-res textures stay in their seats...art design was fantastic for Yoshi's though, as it was for Yoshi's Island. BTW, check out Yoshi's island--honestly doesn't look much worse than story, sans the 3D effects.

I know of 2D games that looked better than Yoshi's Story that were released around late 1997 & early 1998 which was when Yoshi's Story 1st came out.

SKTTR

There are enough games with Mode7 on the VC:

  • ActRaiser
  • F-Zero
  • Ogre Battle
  • Secret of Mana
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Probotector: Alien Rebels
  • The Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Basically every SNES game has Mode7 effects.

Try The Conduit, Call of Duty WaW, Red Steel and Medal of Honor and tell me if you think those games are "flat" looking - or - if Yoshi's Story looks graphically better than them.
