Man, the Wii's getting some good RPGs lately. Monster Hunter 3, Arc Rise Fantasia, Xenoblades, The Last Story, Tales of Grace. I never thought I'd see so many great games coming to the Wii! I'm practically drooling!
Looks better than I recall. I wish I had any hope for so much as one of these to come to Blockbuster. I don't like most RPGs, so I hate not being able to try before buying.
This is a day 1 buy for me, I don't know why, but everything about this game appeals to me, especially the art direction! This and the last story needs to get localized!
I really don't like the looks of this. Looks like a dumbed down, boring version of Monster Hunter to me.
The gameplay seems to be influenced more by Crisis Core and Final Fantasy XII than anything else. The Only real Monster Hunter Vibe that people keep talking about is the mondo size of the enemies, but that's more for dramatic effect than anything else. Really, I think all the comparisons to Monster Hunter have been really unfair and inaccurate.

That's redundant.
>_>
@Mickeymac: Obviously it's going to play differently, but those are the vibes I'm getting from the trailer (some of the areas look insanely similar to MH3, especially the cave portion early on).
My main problem with this is how boring it looks. First of all, the animations look really stiff and uninteresting (some even goofy). Second, the monster AI looks absolutely moronic - I mean c'mon, you don't expect a giant monster to just stand still and occasionally hit someone with a wimpy swing of its arm.
I got too bored to even finish watching the trailer, so that's all the input I've got.

...its turn-based. That's why I said its more like Final Fantasy 12 and Crisis Core. Both of them are actually turn-based when it comes to actual combat. That's not stupid AI, that's par for the course. Its not like Monster Hunters, which is really more of an action game than it is an RPG. If the enemies were always so fierce in their attacks, you wouldn't have time to strategize.

As far as I can tell this isn't strictly turn-based. It looks like it's at least semi-action based. Did you see the guy dodging around? I didn't notice any combat menus either.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good turn-based RPG (FF: 4 Heroes of Light is at the top of my 2010 wishlist). This just has a different look and feel, and after spending 140 hours playing Monster Hunter it looks pretty dull.

If you watched the video in its entirety, you would've seen the combat menues at work. Also, I guess you've never played an Action/turn-based hybrib before, have you? They're in a lot of MMOs and MMO-like games. In this case, it seems to be most inspired by Final Fantasy XII, and in that game, the real-time elements just add a new layer of strategy on top of the usual Turn-based gameplay. If you watch the video, you'll see that all that "dodging" doesn't really do much, since its all stats based. Its gonna hit no matter what, unless the RNG rolls a miss. Its nothing like an action game at all, and you're not supposed to be concentrating on the direct combat between one guy and the enemy. You're supposed to be watching the whole battlefield, planning you next move and getting ready to execute that plan. It really is a turn-based game, just one where you have to pay more attention and be able to think quickly, though this game does let you make commands while paused, so you don't have to feel pressured.
Honestly, just keep an open mind for now, at least until we learn more about it. Its a kind of game you've never experienced before, so you might like it, so long as you don't expect it to be what it is clearly not.
All that sounds nice and all, but I still think the animations look crappy and the monsters look mentally stupid, despite how turn-based it apparently is. I'll try to finish the trailer later. ;3
Also, I've played Chrono Trigger to completion. I enjoyed it quite a bit, too, though that was the last game on my mind while I watched this new trailer.
Edit: Just finished the trailer. I have to say that combat menu makes it look a whole lot better - I don't know how it got past me before, though it does look a lot different than most other JRPGs'.
Look at the other trailers, Pix. There's one where it shows them exploring the MASSIVE world. It's nothing like Monster Hunter.

Glad that you're giving it another chance. We still don't know much about the game outside this trailer and a recent description, so I'd say there's still nothing to get excited about just yet. Right now, all thats important is that you keep an open mind, and don't dismiss it off-hand just because it looks kinda sorta similar to a game you really like but isn't as good. In other words, don't do what I did with Muramasa. (I'm still trying to track down a copy of that game >_<)

It actually looks slightly better than Monster Hunter to me, but still stupid. But I agree with you first statement. The Last Story FTW!!
@Mickeymac Crisis Core was amazing from what I've seen and played, but this doesn't look half as fun to me, gameplay-wise.
@pix You should pick up two copies of 4 Heroes of Light and walk across the country to my house, and then we can play it together and have a really good time. Just sayin'.
