Turn-based or real-time--I'd take either kind of Zelda spinoff RPG if it meant finally getting to play Zelda characters other than Link; Majora's Mask was great and a large part of it could be attributed to Link's transformations.
Otherwise, Zelda's always a tease to me. Midna had all her cool magic in cutscenes and you couldn't use any of it, and Romani was a sharpshooter with her bow in the ending of Majora's Mask. Marin was already supremely entertaining with her wacky personality, but she'd be even cooler if she used animal summoning for something other than a cutscene. Twilight Princess has a few soldier-looking characters who never do anything except hang around the tavern. In the Ocarina of Time manga, Malon hits a Gerudo thief in the face with her pitchfork to instantly become a cooler character. Tetra was a pirate--I shouldn't even need to say anything else--and Darunia was a Goron chief and supposedly a great warrior. With these kinds of characters around Zelda games all the time, cool material would practically write itself if they'd just make a spinoff that doesn't have the restriction of Link being the only playable character.
As long as there isn't the "Random Battles", I could go for it.
i think it would be par for the Zelda course if Nintendo were to leave it so that you can see random enemies on the screen and fight them or avoid them as you will, kinda like Chrono Trigger or SMRPG/Paper Mario/the Mario and Luigi games.

@Machu: I would want the choice between active and turn-based or a 'wait' system... i love turn-based RPGs. :3

@theblackdragon But I simply don't understand turn-based fights, they don't make sense to me. Countless games and franchises have passed me by because I can't take the 'combat' seriously. As an example, I absolutely hate Final Fantasy, but love Crystal Chronicles. If it happened to Zelda, it would ruin it for me. I'm gonna shut up now coz I know I'm outnumbered on this one.
I think a turn based Zelda RPG would be great for the DS. I would love to see the old Link To The Past graphics with the turn based gameplay, and knowing how Nintendo treats Zelda, I'd bet there is a fair share of innovation they'd put into what is a fun but formulaic genre right now.
As for a Wii Zelda, take the foundation that the Fables series and Fallout 3 have taken and rewrite everything around it to make it an innovative Zelda game that took a concept and made it even better. Plus, going that route, I don't think you'd alienate the existing Zelda fans but I bet you pull in a lot more. I'd be one because a leveling system is something I've wanted for the LONGEST time.
@Machu: that's why i'm open to having a choice, so that both sides of the issue are satisfied. personally, I love having the time to pick and choose which attacks or spells or whatever to build up my turn in battle, with no pressure other than HP, speed, who's stronger than whom and oh no, i'm running out of MP or (insert item here). :3

@theblackdragon: I hear ya, but I like to plan 'on the fly', as though I was there. I can't even play Pokemon ffs (though I can play Paper Mario, hhm).

Ditto. I don't want the game to turn into a twitch-fest, so turn-based is my preference, though I was in Machu's position with FFVII and I did hate the turn-based thing and didn't understand it. Now I appreciate the strategic nature of it more and endlessly running about and having to manually fight things in games like Zelda gets really wearying so my woim has toined!
I would be much more likely to buy a future Zelda game if it was an RPG. I did have a thought that a Zelda-Metroid crossover could be good given the exploration aspects of both games.
@Machu: Paper Mario has the timed button presses going for it that probably kept you interested. I don't mind timed button presses (in fact, I welcome them; anything that helps to increase damage done during an attack is fine by me ), also, Pokemon (the older ones, at least) doesn't have much of a plot going for it outside of battling, so i agree with you that it's pretty boring on its own.

Yeah I'm still waiting for that fully realised 3D Pokemon adventure game, where you control the Master, but then control the lil critters directly once released from 'the ball', that would rock! I bet I'm on my own there though.
And yes that IS why I liked Paper Mario, that was fun! Ding, Ding, Ding... BAM!
Personally, for whatever reason, I can handle turn based on a handheld but after FF XII, I can't handle it on the console anymore. It's way too slow and plodding. It didn't take me long to get the gambit system down in FF XII and I absolutely loved it. I loved that the action picked up, every character did everything I wanted them to, and I loved just moving past old conventions...of course every FF fanboy had to whine because it wasn't the old FF and now we have FF XIII which I won't pick up...can't do turn-based on console anymore.
Also, I thought there was more strategy in setting up gambits than there ever was in turn-based games...OR...I put more thought and planning into the gambits then I would in turn-based.

Now that I like the sound of. I bought a 360 purely for Fallout 3 and while I liked the format of the game with the leveling up system and real time and VATS system I found the whole atmosphere a little depressing after a while(which is why I've still not finished it, LOL) but that kind of thing in the Zelda universe could be sweet. I agree that a turn based Zelda would probably work better on DS and with ALTTP graphics, I for one, would be all over it. Lets hope Miyamoto reads these threads.
There even could be enemies that require real-time reactions, think Paper Mario audience but broader and happening even surprisingly to turned based enemies and some you can wait on or have to gain-build up 'power' for quickly or so!
Like I mentioned before, not like usual RPG in presentation, but even where dialogue and things happening while not 'battling' and in-battle-mode.
Hard to explain, but not just some clone of an RPG! Where things happen because of your choices, not just story-wise, but because you took too long some where things progress 'differently', or because you always do something in some way, etc.
So, a lot of surprises in-terms of what can and does happen at any given time, and from incredible 'stats taking' and recording of your experiences and behaviour!
Not really. i just want a zelda game where you are not always link. in PH you get to be that goron guy. THAT WAS CRAZY F@#*ING FUN!!!! but you were only him for like 2 seconds.
