What would be the benefit of buying a Wii? I'm already interested in buying a Wii U but is there any benefit to buying a Wii that I wouldn't get with the Wii U?

benefits?
well it's cheaper.
I guess that's all since the WiiU is suposed to be able to do play all the Wii's games with all their features working.

You can play Gamecube games. That's the only benefit. And That's if you get a used one off eBay that has Gamecube support.

Otherwise no, there is no benefit.

yeah there's this one too. Gamecube games are really worth it! though it's easier to get a Gamecube since newer Wiis don't play Gamecube....

Just being able to play old Gamecube games on the Wii, which you can't on WiiU. That's really about it. Supposedly GC games are coming to the wiiU Virual console but at the current rate of the VC games being released we'll probably never see them.

Wow, thanks for the quick response, I was not expecting multiple rapid answers!

What do you guys mean newer Wiis? Do you mean the Wii Mini? Or do you mean that the original Wii system, depending on how old it is, will have GC support or not?

By newer Wii, we mean the regular model had the functionally removed to decrease cost (only those sold after that point, the one with it already kept it.)
There also is one benifit, it's small, but there. The ability to use a GameCube controller with select Wii games.

They mean wiis released before 2010, because they con't play GC. Also, I would recommend getting a GC and a Wii U, so you get the best of both. That's what I did anyway.

You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

This seems like a good idea, as a GC can be had for extremely cheap. Thanks!

Nope. If you want to play Wii games than go ahead and get Wii U.

Standard definition Wii games look horrible on HDTVs, and as you would normally be playing a Wii U on an HDTV, the regular Wii games would look bad. I can't stand to use the Wii mode on my Wii U.

I think it's worth it to have a separate Wii to play on an SDTV. Always better to play it the way it was meant to be played. I've tried several HDTVs from different manufacturers, and the story is always the same. Stick with a CRT for Wii.

There's really no point in getting a Wii now. The newer models being sold in stores don't have Gamecube support. The Wii U plays all Wii games and the HDMI makes the colours pop a little more on them.
Might as well buy a Wii U and if you want to play Gamecube games, you can find a used unit dirt cheap at a thrift store. Allegedly Gamecube games are coming to VC sometime in the future, but who knows when that's going to be.

The Wii also has a better virtual console library at the moment but most of those games will make it (sooner or later) to the Wii U. Also keep in mind if you do get a Wii to play Gamecube games alot of the better ones were ported to the Wii with Wii controls.

Wii vertical (with GC retrocompatibility and GC controller ports) is the best option.

Please skip this crap models: Wii horizontal and Wii mini.

Buy Wii now and play all the games in its library that deserve to be played plus all the Nintendo games you've missed in the past that are available on VC and GC. Buy Wii U in 2 years when it has at least 10 must have games in its library. The very few reasons for buying a Wii U right now are Monster Hunter Ultimate (because the servers on the Wii are down) and Super Mario 3D World. Maybe WindWaker HD (you can play WindWaker on Wii) and Pikmin 3 also. But 4 or 5 games don't justify owning a console and waiting like a sap for something to come by. Ok, maybe an year from now, when and if you have DKCR:TF, SSB and Mario Kart 8.
In the end it all depends on the time you have on your hands and the things you like. If you don't have a lot of time (there are not many good games on the Wii U to spend it on, either way) or you like Monster Hunter, which can keep you occupied until the next thing comes up, then buy a Wii U. If you have the time and your favourite games are not yet released on the Wii U, maybe your best bet is Wii.

Unless you can get a Wii that has the Gamecube parts I really dont see the point in getting a Wii now if you are going to get a Wii U later on. The only reason to buy a Wii that can play Gamecube games is that some Wii games like Mario Kart Wii, the Smash Bros game and GoldenEye can be played using the Gamecube controller which some people like over the Wii controls. But if that doesn't interest you or if you are just interested in playing Gamecube games you are better off just saving the money for a Wii U and buying a Gamecube as well. You can find a Gamecube pretty cheap now, they go for about $50 on ebay.

Yeah, I don't think that's even remotely fair. "Hey, don't buy a 40 bucks Wii, but instead buy a 160 bucks Wii U and 30 bucks Gamecube." For that amount of money you can buy a Wii and 10 good games.
Edit: Here "bucks" = GBP.

Yeah but with the Wii U/Gamecube purchase you would also have access to the Wii U library for years to come.
