Yesterday, Nintendo finally pulled the plug on the Wii's and older DS consoles. I'm not saying that Nintendo needs to turn it back on but for the thousands of Nintendo fans out there that really do love the console, I think that Nintendo should host something like once a season or whatever called Wii Week. During this time, Nintendo would for one whole week turn back on the Wifi allowing old gamers to be able to play their old games again. I doubt they will ever do this but it would be nice.
Why does everyone think Nintendo had anything to do with the system shutdown. Do some research before opening your mouth and blame Nintendo. The fact of the issue is that GameSpy handled the infrastructure for the Wii and DS WiFi. GameSpy was purchased by IGN and they decided to shutdown GameSpy's serivces. Nintendo wasn't the only one affected. A few PS3 games that used GameSpy to handle their online servers were shutdown as well as well as some PC games too.
So @Kendallcooper: it's not as easy as flipping a switch.

About the only thing Nintendo can do is create serves of their own but honestly why spend the money and manpower doing that when they have the Wii U and 3DS? Besides if they were to make their own servers for the Wii and DS at this point it would look really bad to some people for the Wii U. I am sure the Pachters out there would go nuts with that one.

Yeah, doesn't matter anyways. Nintendo will makes better games for us soon anyways like The Last Story 2. Would be awesome if they made it and allowed players to switch between characters in game. Xenoblade 2 would also be a really great game.
