let's face it, rumors about the next nintendo have been popping up for years, but it seems to have hit a fever pitch today. a lot of different sources are all claiming that the next console will be revealed at E3, which ties in nicely with the wii price cut rumors going around. not to mention that we're at the 5 year mark since the wii's launch and nintendo has never broken that 5 year cycle.

they all agree that the next system will have 1080p output, will be more powerful than any of the current gen systems (as it should be, since they're pretty old at this point), and will be backwards compatible with wii. that's the part that's interesting to me, since if it's got HD output and plays wii games then it might be exactly what we've all been asking for since seeing those HD shots of mario galaxy.

It's the right time, for sure. I'm skeptical that it'll be more powerful than the 360 and PS3, but you never know. If it is I just hope it doesn't cost 600 bucks, or whatever. :/

It'll be interesting to see what they show at E3.

Kotaku being part of this confirms it isn't true.

The people who want this should be ashamed of themselves. Hope you enjoy crap for the first 2 years of the console. Again.

If Nintendo is feeling nice it will be $300, if not than $350. Nintendo doesn't rip people of but this time they might. ( especially after a lot of people shelled out 250 for a 3DS)

Wouldnt surprise me. With the success of the 3DS it would only make sense that now they turn their attention to the next console.

I would guess the new console would cost $300 in the US. No way it would be more than $350. Nintendo knows very well that $600 high end consoles do not do well (for the PS3 to have pulled this through somehow shows the strength Sony's brand has developed).

Yes, we'll see HD, and I think, given that the PS3 is $300 right now, we'll see more power under the hood (but at what point is that power no longer really needed)? I don't see it having so much power that it makes the PS360 look "last gen."

I think the 3DS is foreshadowing the new home console's online system, although hopefully it will be upgraded further to really be competitive to what Sony and Microsoft are offering.

PS3 and 360 both offer better motion control than the Wii now, so that will have to be upgraded as well. The machine has to do more than play catchup, because I know a lot of people who have bought 360's and PS3's now that they're reasonably priced. If the Wii2 doesn't offer something different, those people won't buy it (don't know what that difference will/should be). It will need to be relevant to the next generation of Microsoft and Sony consoles, whatever they end up being. Otherwise, why buy a Nintendo console every 5 years when you can buy an Xbox or PS ever 10?

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I'm sure a new console is in the works, but I doubt we'll hear about it for some time. They just popped out a 3DS, and they've stated multiple times that they likely won't have a new console out for a couple years.

Personally I would love to see the Wii keep on going a few more years.

I still hope this will only be a rumor because i dont want any new console now, hey the Wii still has so much potential just look at the games Metroid prime 3 was great but it didnt use the wiis full potential just compare the graphics with dkc returns, and nintendo should take some extra time for a good development like they did with the ds 3 upgrades before releasing something totally new like the 3ds, i prefer when nintendo puts effort in development to creat something sony can't copy in just 2-3 months^^

Well, that's a lot of Nintendo's problem probably...they haven't released ANY console upgrade in nearly 5 years...
The PS3 has seen console redesigns and HDD capacity increased, as well as the Xbox 360.

At this point, Nintendo is basically relying on themselves for the Wii support, as third parties have pretty much abandoned the system for any "core" type games it appears...unless E3 has some incredible announcements from third parties, which I highly doubt.

I would tend to agree, and considering that IGN is on it...along with Game Informer, it's probably all fake for hits and setup to be a big "APRIL FOOLS!"
If it wasn't for the supposed price leak first at Engadget, then K-Mart...those are what seem to be giving this credibility...other than Captain Obvious "It's more powerful than consoles released 5 years ago."

I don't see why it wouldn't be more powerfull than the 360/PS3. Those things sell for $400~450AU these days and for the 360 that's with Kinect and you can be damn sure, given their age, that both of the "HD Consoles" are turning huge profits on the hardware now. Keeping in mind the 3DS sold for (not RRP) ~$300AU here, why not? No reason why they couldn't make one sell for $400 here (about the same as the original RRP of the Wii) and have it more powerful than the HD consoles.

Also, of course it's going to be HD. This might be news, if this rumor is true, but it shouldn't really be surprising people. People need to remember that when the Wii came out a 32" 1080p LCD cost over $1500AU.... easily. Now you can get them for $400AU or so and you can even get a 40" LED backlit 100Hz LCD by a top brand for $1000AU. When I got the Wii on launch day I had a 20" 3:4 SD CRT which we got for ~$350 in 2004 or so and my computer had a 17" CRT. Now I have 2x 32" 1080p LCDs, thinking of getting a 40", and I have two LCD computer monitors which are bigger than the CRT I first used the Wii on. That's the world the Wii's successor will be in and it's a very different market than the Wii launched into. HD is a no-brainer

Nintendo always finds a way to make their consoles affordable and when it comes to power try to find efficient ways to do so. X360's and PS3's tech are not dated but 'affordable' at this point. Technology is rapidly changing and I have a good feeling that Nintendo's next console will be more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360. The 3DS is an impressive device and I could only imagine what their next-home console will be like. At the same time, I can't imagine something that looks better than Uncharted 2.

And frankly, I'm not all for eye-candy because yeah it's cool, but what about the games and the control methods. A hybrid of Classic Controller pro and Wii Motion Plus would be sweet. Having a Motion Plus and CCPro controller with every console would be sweet. Online support better than Wii's (I'm neutral with online though, not a huge fan of it compared to local play).. and well, great games. If Nintendo uses a similar 'release' strategy for their games like they are planning on doing for 3DS for their next home console, I can see this being much more successful than the Wii in terms of available games every month or so and spreading them out accordingly.

We just got the 3DS and already you guys are wanting more? Take a chill pill people. It's not gonna be announced this year. Are you that eager to start all over with a new system? Just because the Wii's price is dropping doesn't mean it's dead already. Patience young grasshoppers.

It'll be interesting to see what they show at E3.

It seems pretty likely that they should make it at least slightly more powerful than current console. It would be rather wierd for a next gen console to be behind last gen's competition as far as technical aspects go.

Even if they do show something at E3, it will be a preview of hardware still long in the future.

Even the original GameInformer article that spurred the latest round of rumors indicates a late 2012 launch:

Nintendo is already showing publishers the system in an effort to get them interested and allow them plenty of time to start developing titles in anticipation of the system's reported late 2012 launch

So, either way, it won't make much a difference anytime soon.

Actually it'd be weird if the next gen Nintendo console didn't have last-gen graphics, haha.
