Topic: Wii problem with my HDTV

Here's a weird issue I'm having:

My Wii works perfectly fine with my HDTV. I have the component wires that I bought from Nintendo's website (so they are 100% 1st party) connected to my Onkyo receiver, which is then connected to my HDTV. I have played dozens of retail, VC, and WiiWare games on the system without 1 problem...until now. I recently downloaded Ironclad (a Neo Geo game) to my system, but it doesn't work. I hear the audio perfectly fine but the screen won't show up. If I leave it on for a bit, the screen will flash on and scroll up and down a bit before flashing off again.

I noticed this problem one time before on my TV when I tried to use my SNES on it. I usually play my older consoles on my older TV, so I never noticed this problem before. I have played NES & SNES Virtual Console games on my Wii (and HDTV) without ever having any problem.

Has anyone ever had a problem like this before, and does anyone have any suggestions for fixing it? Thanks.

I have heard similar problems with people trying to play Super Mario RPG on an HD TV. I honestly have never come across a problem like that, but it just could be the game. I don't mean to be generic, but that could be just it.

I'm back (for the moment)!

OK, I'll give it a try.

The SNES thing was really weird too because I had just used my N64 on the tv and it worked fine. And I used the same wire for my SNES that I did for the N64...weird

Deleting and re-downloading didn't work

I use my NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, and Wii on my HDTV without much problem. The only problem I ever had was with the Mega Man X Collection on Gamecube. I tried playing it on the Wii, but I had the same problem you have with Ironclad: the audio was there, but I couldn't actually see the games. It turns out that the component cables for the Wii were the problem, and for some reason they can't display the game. Replacing them with the original cables would fix it. I know that it's a GC game and you're talking about a VC game, but maybe it's a similar problem? Then again, you probably don't want to get rid of the cables just to play one game...

Beep.
That is all.

Have you tried to set the wii to 480p? I had a similar problem when I first set up component cables and since I switched I haven't had any problems playing VC games. The option should be in the system settings, under screen, and then TV resolution.

I had my Wii set to 480p...Like I said, I've had this same set up for years and it has never been a problem before. I tried the link that peterifico posted, but that still didn't work, so I called Nintendo Customer Service. It took the dummy on the phone a few minutes to understand what the hell I was talking about. I told her it was a Neo Geo game, and she told me Nintendo doesn't support Neo Geo games :-/

Then she told me that I was going to have to replace my component wires with the standard composite wires. After I refused that, she told me I would have to change my wiring and plug the wires directly into my television instead of my receiver. I told her that would require me to give up stereo sound, which I'm not willing to do for one lousy VC game (actually it's a great game, but that's not the point).

Finally, she suggested that I go into settings and choose 480i. Then I had to go into the Operations Guide of the game (Ironclad) and do what Peterifico's link suggested (Z+A+2 buttons together). Then it finally worked! The problem of course is now it looks like crap and any time I want to play that game I have to go into the Wii's settings to fix it. It's a bit annoying, but it's a lot better than buying a Neo Geo and shelling out over $100 just to play Ironclad.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Now if I could just figure out that stupid SNES problem...Weirdly enough, MegaStoneSmash91, the only SNES game I tried was Mega Man X2. Maybe it has something to do with Mega Man??? That seems completely crazy, but I should try a different game to see if it works.

I don't think think you need to change your Wii setting to 480i, and I believe the Z+A+2 button combination applies the settings permanently for that game.

I tried the Z+A+2 thing, but it didn't work for Ironclad. I did everything the way I was supposed to, and I even heard the chime that I was supposed to hear, but it didn't fix the game. That's why I called Nintendo support. Switching to 480i was the only thing I could do to play the game without switching wires or my set up.

If you have a better idea, I'm all ears.

Are you able to view other interlaced games over component? It sounds like your tv won't display interlaced resolutions over component; not all do.

Really? I have Super Mario RPG on VC and it works fine on my HDTV using component cables.

I'm pretty okay.
