Some of you may know this but others might not. One day Nintendo announced that on May 20th all online services will be discontinued. This includes online play and shopping on Dsi and Wii shop and more. It was unknown why they did this but my theory is that they are trying to get people to move on to Wii u. This is obvious but probably Nintendo is starting to leave the Wii

And can you go a little faster?!
Wait, are they permanently shutting down the Wii shop? Ya mean we will no longer be able to download any sega and neogeo games anymore???? Surely, you jest.

Well Nintendo obviously got their moneys worth out of mario kart and those games so now they have money to work on new stuff so why would they keep supporting the people that got them the momey in the first place.
No console, game, or service is supported indefinitely.
Not true. Counterstrike is still supported even now you can buy it and play it. There are ancient games on Steam that have patched out Gamespy. (Or offer dedicated servers).
It is a console thing even with its massively higher cost per game.
It is particularly bad for the DS stuff where all the content is actually on the cart just unlocked via the save game. (Nintendo had on cart locked content first).
Bravely Default with the update data thing is designed to have a kill switch to fail sooner rather than later it is a bad trend and getting worse.
With alternate servers developed by fans (Wiimmfi and save-nintendo-Wifi.com), who knows, perhaps one day these become the official servers for Nintendo WiFi again lol. After all, Gamespy servers started like that as well, right?
I also kinda hope that, once the Wii U sales pick up, maybe Nintendo decides to enable the Wii WiFi functionality back through their in-house Nintendo Network? Playing Brawl, MKWii and City Folk without WiFi is kinda pointless.
