Topic: Where are all the creative/fun/lighthearted/original games on the HD consoles?

I miss games like:

  • Gitaroo Man
  • Rival Schools
  • Jet Set Radio
  • Ape Escape
  • Katamari Damacy
  • Drill Dozer
    ETC.

thankfully my Wii keeps me happy with the great creative games it has in abundance but its worrying that on these supposedly "future-moulding" consoles creative, fun, original and light-hearted games seem to be a thing of the past

This post is not intended to bash the PS360 but highlight a trend in gaming which I find a little worrying. What are you opinions?

Well there's LittleBitPlanet, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, and Viva Pinata for starters. The former two are masterpieces.

Well, I agree with Kid_A. There are games like that out there, but you have to break through the FPS wall to find them.

Just let it happen.

Yeah I totally agree with these 3 but they are only 3 titles, back in the PS2 and Dreamcast days the majority of titles released were fun, quirky and fresh. At the moment the gaming industry seems to be striving for hyper-realism (which is great sometimes) but isn't gaming about crazy and fun ideas? Imagine the potential for great creative games with the power both the PS360 have!

I know what the topic-starter is saying--I think the best part of the Wii is all the charming, light-hearted and original games. But the HD consoles do have some of those types of games, and the few that they do are really good.

Yeah I wasn't saying there are NO fun titles just that this "FPS wall" is a worrying gaming trend.

I'm not worried, because I know the wii [and successors] will always have fun creative game for me.

Just let it happen.

Well I certainly agree with that. When I see games like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts I think: why aren't there more games like this? The incredible, imaginative environments that these HD consoles can create are mindblowing. I think it's sad that all that horsepower goes to creating these bland shooters. Although Uncharted 2 absolutely blew me away.

I truly hope so, I love gaming but I'm not really interested in where the industry seems to be heading at the moment. I will keep supporting Nintendo though as they haven't let me down yet. Its just a shame that the responsibility for providing these types of games has near-enough become the sole responsibility of Nintendo and the few similarly minded video game producers out there.

Oh, and you also forgot Chrash bandacoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Just let it happen.

I intentionally left out remakes and continuations of series', my original post said "games like", I primarily talking about new IP's and drastically original games like the ones mentioned at the start.

Trouble is, they're rubbish. Truly rubbish.
Generic primary-coloured platformers every bit as imagination free as all the FPS's they offer an 'alternative' to.

Good point...
But why is banjo kazooie counted then? It's a continuation of a series.
And yes, Spyro and Crash are not good games.

Just let it happen.

I never mentioned Banjo Kazooie in my original post, Kid A brought that title up and I kinda agreed with him as "Nuts and Bolts" was a dramatic change to the usual formula from what I heard so I let it slide, lol

Oh, duh. I feel sort of stupid right now
Whatever, my point is that I completely agree that PS360 is almost all FPS. I am not worried, since if I want mushrooms, I have NSMBW.

Nah don't sweat it, totally agree with u on the NSMBW front tho, what a great game. I'm also loving Zack & Wiki, Another Code:R, Punchout!!, A Boy and His Blob, Muramasa and Tomena Sanner. Can't wait til friday either for Max and the Magic Marker and next week for Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Don't know what I'd do without the Wii this gen, so many games so little time!

Ratchet and Clank series. Pixeljunk series. Etc. There are more than three games.

Come on, friends,

The forthcoming follow up to Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus looks like a true thing of beauty.

The words in bold are the main problem. People are too occupied with how many polygons a console can produce without slowdown and how realistic games are that they are forgetting that the future isn't always a good thing. In about five years, we'll all either be dead (because of 2012 ) or in a mass CO 2 apocalyptic fallout. But does more than 50% of the population of Earth even care? No. They're too caught up in pwning n00bs in Online FPS 5,980,234 and buying The-Same-Sports-Game-You-Bought-Last-Year.
