Oy. I'm 39 cough cough and, the Atari 2600 and Playstation were my consoles of choice until the Wii; though historically video games = arcade games for me.

All my money went to comic books during the NES/SNES/Genny era though I played games on friend's systems so I'm somewhat aware of them.

23 here, and I spent my 'early' years on my N64, Playstation and the good old Gameboy. I still remember being 10 years old and saving my pocket money up for my N64 with Mario 64. Never played any of the generation's before stuff, so missed out on a lot of the classics from the 2D era.

Final Fantasy VII (hence my username), Ocarina of Time, and Tetris were what it was all about for me as a child!

I'm 16 but was brought up on the SNES and Sega Mega Drive to the surprise of my friends. I was three when I first picked up the controller and played Shinobi 3 on the SMD that was bought for my brother (who is 8yrs older than me). My family skipped the fifth gen of gaming (N64, Playstation, Saturn) much to my dismay so I had to console myself [no pun intended] with the SNES and SMD. My brother got his Gameboy Pocket when I was 5 but I played it a lot more than him. The games I remember playing clearly as a child are: Shinobi 3, All Sonics and Sonic Spinoffs, Golden Axe, Super Mario All-stars/World/Kart/Land/Land 2, as well as Zelda ALTTP and Super Metroid. Those were the days.

I'm 33 but after reading this thread I suddenly don't feel that old anymore phew .

First console I ever saw and played was a colecovision back in the 80's when I was a child. (Also had played one of those SD 050/070/090 clones if that counts).
Wii is actually the first console I have ever owned, bought it February 2007 (I was convinced to buy my first console after playing Wii sports boxing).

My first experience with games would have been 'space invaders' and 'rat race' on my Dad's Vic 20. I would have been 5 at the time. When I was 6 or 7 I discovered 'The Last Ninja' on the C64 and I was hooked for life (hence my avatar). Around 10 I played Super Mario Bros at a rich friend's birthday party and from then I annoyed the crap out of my Mum until she caved. That christmas I picked out Zelda II (because it had a gnarly looking sword on the cover and 'holy crap the cart is gold' - it must be good!) and was officially a Nintendo freak for life. SNES came around and blew me away again. SF2 and Castlevania IV, Mario World and Link to the Past were amazing.
Then in 96/97 I was pretty wasted at a friend's place and saw goldeneye and bought a N64 the next day. Mario 64 was also amazing, MK64 was some of the best multiplayer fun I've even had and Ocarina... wow.
Anyway, gave console gaming away about 98/99 because games like Diablo II and Return to Castle Wolfenstein absolutely sucked me in and made me drop out of a Mechanical Engineering degree (that and many benders). I picked up gaming again recently in a more casual sense because now that i'm 29 i've finally learned to moderate it and not do 20 hour zelda/diablo-a-thons or strive for the elusive triple head-shot lol.

N.B. With Wolfenstein and Diablo III on the horizon, I am very worried about my resolve to moderate my gaming hahaha

EDIT - And BTW, I'm probably more "hardcore" than most of the people that use that word...but I have absolutely no interest in most of the games that are considered "hardcore" (in the sense that it is most often used)

I would say the same of myself, if you mean the definition of "hardcore" that is more aimed at GTA or Madworld than it is at, say, Zelda.

That's exactly what I mean

I also fit into the definition of hardcore that prefers Zelda and Metroid to MadWorld and GTA. Excessive violence and profanity do NOT equal quality adult entertainment!

My first gaming experience I think was playing on my Dad's copy of Pong. I was given a Game Boy for my birthday (8th I think), my family played Tetris while my brother and I moved onto Super Mario Land, Wario Land, and Link's awakening. Back then LA seemed like the hardest game in the world. I was very excited to get Kirby's Dream Land a year or two later. I was still very much a climbing trees and football kid, so I didn't get a home console until much later. I got a second hand SNES and the only properly new game I got was Donkey Kong Country 3, the rest were dirt cheap. I didn't wait so long to get an N64 and the was given one for Xmas which came with Mario 64 and Yoshi's Story. I also won a Playstation and a supply of mini-eggs to last a year. After a few years I got bored of the PS and sold it to my brother for some sweets. After that I was Nintendo all the way. I am now a rehabilitated fanboy who owns a Dreamcast and would get an Xbox if I could afford it. I have fond memories of playing Mario Kart and Conker during 6th Form (I got terrible grades) but largely abandoned gaming during my university years. Since then the lure of Galaxy, Brawl and the Virtual Console have proved too strong.
How old am I?

The first video game system I owned was Sega Game Gear when I was six. My parents were too skeptical of games to buy me a home console, but I saved up my money and bought a Genesis (this was when Playstation was coming out). Even though it was a bit behind the times, it was totally worth it, because I loved Sonic. Plus there was all the excitement and pride you get when you're a kid, and you save your own money to buy something big. My first Nintendo console was the N64, and I have many good Smash bros. and Goldeneye tournament memories from high school.

I'm 21+3 btw.

lol... I am 16 and I wasn't brought up around games. My parents just didn't want me to play games, but my best friend bought me a gameboy color (the one with the pikachu on it, and his cheek is the power). So I grew up around the gameboy color which is sort of like the NES, but its a handheld.

I just turned 38. This is my 30th year playing video games since the day I bought an Odyssey 400 Pong system at a garage sale when I was 8. I was hooked from that moment on.

Plain old gamer :)
