If this topic has been made before, then I couldn't find it.

So the Wii (for whatever reason) has attracted a ton of 2D platformers, which is not a bad thing at all. Since the Wii U is coming out this year and the Wii is pretty much on it's last leg, I might as well ask what is your favorite 2D platformer on the Wii? It can be any retail or WiiWare game, but not a VC game.

Also, platformers that have 3D gameplay alongside 2D gameplay like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sonic Colors, and Epic Mickey do not count.

For me, it would have to be a toss up between Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Both are excellent games with gorgeous graphics, awesome music, and ridiculously fun gameplay. They are a million times more fun than the extremely overrated New Super Mario Bros. Wii in my opinion.

Anyway, share your thoughts here.

Kirby's Epic Yarn. I'm pretty sure that was 2D. Right?

Yes, it is 2D. I still need to play my copy of that game.

Donkey Kong Country Returns or Kirby's Epic Yarn. I would say Rayman Origins beats them both but I have that for the PS3.

There's so much that is great about this game I don't even know where to start. Best platformer on Wii by far IMO.

Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

What I've played so far, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I've yet to get Kirby's Return to Dreamland and Donkey Kong Country Returns, although I'm sure they are excellent.

For me a close battle between New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Return to Dreamland and Wario Land Shake It. I loved them all, but I'll go with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's pretty much gaming perfection in my opinion.

I'm torn between New super Mario bros. Wii and Wario land: The shake dimension. While NSMBW could have been more original, it still had excellent level design and the multi-player was some of the most fun multi-player on the Wii and Wario land:TSD had lovely graphics some very creative and well designed levels, a fantastic soundtrack and it may have been short but the massive amount of replay value made up for that.

Donkey Kong Country Returns, although I haven't played Kirby's Return to Dreamland yet.

Wario Land: Shake It!, Rayman Origins and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all in the running for second.

This. It's the only 2D platformer for the Wii that's not on any other platform that I like, and I've tried all of them except Sonic Colors by now. Most were either boring (Epic Yarn), frustrating (New Super Mario Bros.), or both (DKC Returns).

That's a really hard question to be honest.

I'd have to go with Wario Land Shake It! because it is simply amazing. There is nothing about this game that any other 2-D game on Wii does better, at all. The soundtrack is immense with over 50 songs and the layouts and theme of the levels always suit the music played. Jazz, pop, blues, everything. Graphics wise it's awesome (much better than that Muramasa crap) and all of it is hand drawn from scratch. The replay value is through the roof; the achievements are difficult yet rewarding in the sense that you actually did something challenging. And the game play is phenomenal to say the least. Shake It! is one of the reasons why I think Wario can be better than Mario.

I liked Donkey Kong Country Returns a lot but it didn't feel like the original trilogy. The snazzy explosions made everything feel too dramatic for the Donkey Kong Country (especially the cart levels). Climbing on the grass was neat if the level layouts did rely on it too much and the lack of silhouette levels was disappointing. (Weren't there only two or three of them?) The bosses were awful, too. Even Donkey Kong Country 3 had better bosses than that; the Tikis were ridiculously off-putting as King K. Rool would have been a much better fit, but nope. And don't get me started on that pointless monkey Diddy. Why was he even in the game? Playing through Mirror Mode it was apparent that he was never needed in the first place and with the fact you can't even play as him with his own balanced advantages (unless you're playing multiplayer...) is inexcusable. Rare please.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was great but even the multiplayer was boring. Too easy, same music, same themed worlds, etc. = boring. Bringing back the Koopalings was cool but nothing special. Epic Yarn was really fun if too easy. And Return to Dream Land was way too amazing. But you knew that already.

Just for you.

DKCR. While it didn't capture just how simple yet flawless the first 2 DKC games were, it made up for it by being far more insane than those games. (oh god what happened to the minecart tracks, lava, explosions ahhh!)
