Topic: What is with the movie selection on netflix?

netflix's streaming selection really sucks compared to their DVD offerings -- once you've made it through the few recent films, most of what's left is either crappy independent films or NatGeo documentaries now that they've put those up. I will say i've seen some amazing movies that i might never have seen before, though, just because they're either foreign films or i would've chosen something more recent before watching them -- Bronson was one I absolutely did not expect to be as awesome as it was, freaking hilarious movie right there even though i was kinda sad at the end of it.... also got to see The Shawshank Redemption, Wyatt Earp, The Commitments, Get Carter, Up, and The Breakfast Club to name a few of the better films i've seen now.

it's also not bad for watching movies that you maybe only halfway wanted to see, lol, like G.I. Joe, Pathfinder, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (holy hell does Men in Tights make so much more sense now hahaha), Iron Man, etc. and so forth. that way you paid maybe the price of a ticket to the theater to have your curiosity satisfied regarding multiple flicks. :3

and their TV shows aren't bad either. We've seen all of Battlestar Galactica (TOS), we're making our way through Soap (hilarious show!), and there's Star Trek, Futurama, FarScape, and plenty of other shows available for the watching. my only complaint is that they don't have much in the way of Top Gear available... booooooooo.

Don't forget the entire run of Angel with a good chunk of Buffy there too. I mean, the service practically pays for itself.

It's not, so it's pointless to let it "load" for a while

I guess I didn't know what to expect seeing as this is my first time with netflix. I may go ahead and get the DVD's by mail set up.
If I want anything really popular I doubt I'll ever find it available for instant streaming on netflix. I suppose some day the majority of peoples movie watching will be done online since the actual discs will be obsolete. That may take a few more years yet.

I doubt that hard media copies will be obsolete. They will be around in one form or another. There are still alot of people myself included like to own hard copies of movies, tv shows, video games etc. There have been a few movies that I streamed from Netflix and likes so much like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for example that I went I got the actual DVD for my collecton.

Personally I think you had to high of expectations on the streaming service and now you are disappointed in it. Like I said in an earlier post I mainly use the streaming when I just sent a movie back and I am waiting for my next one to get here, That and I stream TV shows like Lois and Clark the New Adventures of SUperman and A Team. Thats because if you rent a TV series from them they will only send you one disc at a time which can be a pain since you have to wait for the next disc to get to you. With streaming I can watch the whole series in one sitting if I so chose to.

I'm starting to find a few decent things to watch. I've got about ten or so movies in my instant Que. I even rated a few movies and it finds suggestions based on my favorites. There's a few good ones in there. I found the new Star Trek movie and I might give that a look. Maybe by the time my free month is over I'll know if this is really worth having. It's pretty much the same as having basic cable. Alot of times you really have to flip around to find a good show.

@theblackdragon: Not all independant films are bad. You HAVE to watch Ink. It is bloody amazing what they did with only a 250k budget.

I signed up for Netflix's one month free trial and I enjoyed the movies I watched. I agree that there isn't as big a selection as I wanted but I was able to watch a bunch of great movies in that month. I would continue to pay for my account, but I'm going back to Korea in two weeks and I'm pretty sure streaming won't work in Korea.

We watch mostly TV shows on our Netflix. It's GREAT for those, especially given how expensive buying a TV series DVDs can be.

When it comes to movies, Chicken is right. It's best to browse, because you will probably find something you like. Streaming originally was designed as a free add on to the DVD services they already provided. Companies wouldn't make enough from streaming to put new releases on there, they make more from Netflix DVD rentals.

It's amazing if you like documentaries as well. They have a bunch of BBC nature documentaries on there which are really good. My bf and I watch a LOT of documentaries or documentary type reality shows (watching a series about climbing Mt. Everest right now), so it's great for us. Between Netflix streaming and the internet (just about all cable networks put their shows for the week online) with a tv cable for a laptop, we've gotten rid of cable and never looked back. It's really a good deal for us.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I know, I just jump at any chance I get to mention that movie. XD Ink honestly makes Hollywood look pathetic what with the crap they make with MILLIONS of dollars.

You add movies to your instant queue on the Netflix website and you can watch them on your Wii. I'm pretty sure the Wii Channel won't have everything that's available.

@Kid_A The new DLC channel has a search function so it's just as good as the website now.

Me and my mom have gotten more than our money's worth streaming-wise with The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius alone, and I enjoyed a Beethoven documentary just last night. I for one am quite pleased with their selection.

Their TV selection is excellent, that's for sure. The first three seasons of Farscape, most, if not all of Stargate, Babylon 5, everything from Joss Whedon, Psych, South Park, Family Guy, Futurama, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, The Mitchel and Webb Look, Myth Buster, they just added all of the new Battlestar Galactica, Eurica, Dexter, Weeds, Ren and Stimpy, Avatar, Pushing Daisies, Parks and Recreation, Arrested Development, a crap load of Anime, just barely scratching the surface on that.
To tell the truth, the biggest complaint I have with the service is the limit of 500 items in your instant queue. every time I want to add something I face the arduous task of finding things I want to remove.

Sure, their movie streaming isn't great, but I agree about the awesomeness of their TV service.
Right now I'm in the middle of Parks & Rec season 2.

The Wii channel DOES have everything that's available, and it streams faste and in higher quality than before now! I don't know how!

Oh, also, Netflix streaming has the Laserblast episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

If you haven't seen that one, set aside an hour and a half, watch it, then come back here and thank me.

Hmmm, that's a bit disappointing. I expected at the very least to have films from the past five years. It sounds like Lovefilm is also going to offer streaming for the Wii in the UK so I'll be curious to see how their libraries compare.
