This is ground control to major Tom, you've really made the grade. And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

I suppose DVD playback would be okay for some folk, but most people have a DVD player by now and you get ones really cheap that have region-free playback (I have one chipped and one with a published handset hack), component output and will read pretty much any DVD format as well as play MP3 CDs and DiVX discs.

Looks like Nintendo is looking at video streaming, so I don't think DVDs will be a priority for them...

I don't know but... i think a DVD player on a handheld is a great idea if they had to make one.
Edit: Maybe not great, but i find it BETTER to have a handheld DVD player than having it on a console for some reason.

Better to just have the ability to rip a DVD; the form factor isn't that great for a portable device, though I did watch a lot of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine when I had a rail commute to work. Also nice if you've got to take a trip on company business to keep yourself entertained and easier to transport than a Wii!

I already have a region free DVD player, so have no interest in using the wii for this, what I would like for the next update and this may sound minor, but the ability to access the date and time without going to the home menu, but simply from pressing the home button and it brings this info up at the bottom of the screen, would be handy when you have to watch for time.

DVD's aren't the real deal, Netfilx streaming or another live movie streaming server should be intergrated in the future. Rumor also has it that netflix is looking into it. Think about it, a DVD player can play rented and purchased DVD played while a live Netflix just rents them and returns them for a membership fee. You'll have your DVD player longer then your Wii but can keep a netflix account in a Wii 2. I would personally love to Netflix in 4.1

Sean Aaron - aye it's true most people already have a DVD player (I can count three things in my house that will play them) but it's still a nice feature to have. Infact if they put this feature on an update or a downloadable, I'd remove my DVD player from under my TV and just use the Wii for everything (except printing money - it only does that for Nintendo).

I think it would be cool if the next Wii update allowed full SD streaming, or at least the option to play games from the Wii menu, rather than going into the tacky SD menu.

What would be even better though would be the option to chat to friends via Wii Speak in any game, simply via a Wii Speak icon on the menu that appears when you press the "home" button on your remote.

Yeah, Wii Speak should really have broader support, but I cannot see how it would work since I understand each game basically runs in a subset of the OS and takes over the system -- basically more like a traditional console than a modern computer OS. There's just no way for Wii Speak Channel to run in the background; Nintendo would need to overhaul every version of IOS to do it and that's not likely to happen.

@Sean Aaron: thanks for that input - now I don't need to mention the update ever again (which I've done several times before, now). WiiWare titles could still use it though, couldn't they? Even if you do have to update each and every one of them...

@Wiiloveit: WiiWare titles DO allow for updates... So it's possible... But HIGHLY doubtful.

Please be serious... You REALLY think that will happen?! Just because homebrew did it doesn't mean Ninty will. In fact, Ninty has already stated that DVDs would take "more than a firmware update" and that "a DVD compatible Wii will be released once we meet demands in all regions".

Um, the exact same comment has been used in the past regarding SDHC cards and look at what happened. It was said that it would require more that an firmware update to allow for SDHC, but guess what the homebrew scene proved Ninty wrong. Same with the DVD playback. ;)

I buy Nintendo consoles for games, and that's it!

I'm fed up with all these 'multi-media solutions'. Jack of all trades, master of none!
