Obvious choice number one: Better hardware. With the Wii, it's pretty obvious that all they put in there was "oh-kay we're going to have games with motion control", and when they got there, they decided that was it. Over the few years that the Wii has been out, they've made (rather cheap) attempts to make it seem like the console doesn't have the hardware limitations that it does by giving us, what was the biggest thing, open SD card support? I hope they keep up with everyone else next generation.
Better, less ignorant, strategy. This goes without saying. If you've seen my rant about my love/hate relationship with the Wii, you'll know that I'm not a fan of the way Nintendo has handled their quality control, WiiWare, online, the works. If Nintendo wants to make their system the best without making it look like it belongs in third place, they need to wise up.
On second though, the hardware space of the next console (Don't think upgrade, think of a completely new system), should be 64GB.
What? What from Nintendo are you going to keep that's going to use all that space?
Hey, the PS3 and Xbox 360 has more space then what I mentioned here, so unless we get some extermly huge title, there's no reason to complaint about wasted space. Better to have half left then be force to get an SD card because so few games can fit in it.
Thanks guys for all of the comments and complaints. When I posted this I wanted to get a feel of where we all think Nintendo dropped the ball with the Wii, and where they got it right. Never did I think that we could all have a discussion like this without it turning into flame-bait. Thanks
Also remember Nintendo did just say last week that they will introduce new hardware when they have a new "idea". What does everyone think that idea will be. I think we get Nintendo's next system no later than 2011/2012.

Thing is, I doult Nintendo will put anything out that will require a lot of space. Plus why does the next system "need" to compare with Sony and Microsoft when they're beating them left right and centre.
First off I don't think you'll be downloading videos to memory, you'll be more likly to stream them.
Future WiiWare and VC will still be releativly small in size
Save game data won't take up anything
Same goes to DLC unless you really want to play Rock Band on the Wii HD, or download map packs for Conduit 2, but I doult that's in Nintendo's interests...

Well, I guess it won't be needed
Do you seriously think that the VC titles will be any smaller?
Exactly. We want to make sure that we never run out of space. That way, we won't complain half as much on the hardware issues.
DLC for Guitar Hero songs take up almost 200 blocks, so I think it's necessary.
I absolutely hate running connections through the top of the system and having to leave that plate up all the time if I want to play GC games often. Ikaruga was the only GC game I kept for long after the Wii, but as awesome as the game is, I hated seeing that plate open with a big gray Wavebird receiver sticking out the top, so I got rid of it, haha. I know, I know, what a horrible reason to trade in a game, but I'm a bit obsessive.
Agreed; I've got three GC games and one of them I'm hoping to get rid of (Namco 50th Anniversary; I've got Namco Museum Remix; now I just need the balance released in Wii-native formats). Mostly I don't like having to run the cables; plug in memory cards, but I also don't like the GC controller for d-pad games so I wish they had gone the PS route instead of the MS one with their d-pad/left stick positioning. Ah well.
Provide a special VC/WiiWare rental service where for a sum of about £15/£20 month, you get to play 3 or so VC/WiiWare games at a time and then swap those games back for new ones every 30 days.
You want Nintendo to start taking money away at a constant monthly rate? That is a disadvantage to Nintendo's Philosophy.
Just simply buy and download the game without additional costs.
There should also be a backwards store for virtual console and wiiware games to keep consumers busy without having the consumers to hope for the next one that existed in the wii.

+1
FWIW, this point also applies to the graphic power discussion. Nintendo does not need to keep up with Sony and MS next time around. I wouldn't be surprised if whatever Nintendo's next system is has XB360 graphical power (or less) even if Sony and MS triple or quadruple their power next time. Staying a generation behind (in terms of sheer power) really helps bring the costs down. I don't think Nintendo has any interest in getting back into the hardware wars.
Now Playing DS: Scribblenauts; M&L: BIS--Just Finished: Picross--Backlog: Layton 2; Spirit Tracks Now Playing Wii: Little King's Story--Just Finished: NSMBWii--Backlog: Boy and His Blob

IMO, the Wii HD will have a spec somewhere between the 360 and PS3 now. I would love to see Wii Golf with simerlar graphics seen in Everybody's Golf/Hotshots golf on the PS3.
Hmm.... Looks like we might not see an HD wii for a while...

Satoru Iwata has said that there is currently no reason to make an HD compatible version of the Wii console, saying such an iteration would have no 'significant meaning' to users.
Despite speculative reports to the contrary, the Nintendo President told Venturebeat 'As far as the Wii is concerned, we have not found a significant reason to make it HD-compatible at this time. What is the significant meaning to the users? I don't think we should do it unless we find that reason.'
An HD Wii was heavily rumoured last October, and industry analysts have been confident that such hardware was imminent.
An HD Nintendo console is inevitable, however, with Iwata going onto say, 'If we decide for other reasons to make new hardware, then HD is one of the things we would naturally add.'
Shame, but then again I can see why Iwata is saying that since a Standard def console is beating the crap out of the other systems, then again there'll be a time when the Wii will start to not sell, that's when I think Nintendo will jump the HD boat.
